2 2 A message from Pastor Doug What is it we say about the people who don't study history? They are destined to repeat it? There are things about the past worth remembering. The Bible frequently counsels us to remember the faithfulness of God. "I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your works of old." (Psalm 77:11) A prodigal son's memory of home saved him from death in a pigsty.and what did Jesus say about the bread and the wine? "Do this in remembrance of me." There is a big difference between learning from the past and holding on to certain memories with appropriate gratitude and clinging to the past. I'm often amazed at how we can spend time longing for the "good old days." Which good old days are we talking about? The pre-indoor plumbing days of a hundred years ago? The racism of the 1950s? The days before antibiotics or the recent medical advances that saved your life? When I tend to get that way, I try to remind myself that the good old days were never really as good as I make them out to be in my mind. Living in a rearview mirror creates a distorted view of reality. The idea that people used to be happier, work was more virtuous, Christians were more spiritual, or families were safer in ages gone by is simply a myth. For people whose lives are centered in Christ, the best days are always yet to come. Living in the past more specifically, clinging to the past only forfeits today's opportunities and tomorrow's blessings. We have a number of transitions going on here at First UMC in Boone. I encourage you to read the article in this issue of the newsletter that is titled An Update From the Trustees. Do notice the financial budget we ve been running it for three months now in the newsletter. If you have questions I encourage you to ask them. The sermons for the month of September will feature a series called Comfort Zone re-examining the membership vows in the United Methodist Church what they mean, and what it entails to live into them. Speaking of sermon series did you know you can catch up on and view a missed sermon by going to the churches face book page? Check out one of the new ministry outreach opportunities we provide UMC-lean a laundry soap ministry (there are photos and an article about it in this month s issue.) Have you met the new Music Director Sandy Reid? Those are some of the transitions and there are bound to be others jobs changing, relationships shifting, some folk getting married, some folk will get buried. It s a comfort to take a look in the rearview mirror and that s OK just don t get stuck there. So resist the temptation to long for what once was. Pray instead to live in hope, walk by faith, and rejoice in God's promises for the future. I am focusing all my energies on this one thing forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO BRING THINGS TO THE CHURCH BUT WISH TO DONATE, CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE AND LET DONNA KNOW WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE THINGS TO BE PICKED UP. LIBRARY NEWS There are five new titles in our church library that are part of the UMW Reading Program, but anyone interested in these topics is welcome to check them out. Under Education for Mission, we have purchased FAITH ED. Teaching About Religion in an Age of Intolerance by Linda K. Wertheiner; under Nurturing for Community the title is BROKEN & BLESSED God Changes the World One Person and One Family at a Time by Jessica LaGrone. The title under Social Action is AMERICA AND ITS GUNS A Theological Expose by James E. Atwood. One large print book in the Leadership Development category was purchased titled SALLY RIDE America s First Woman in Space. A children s book was purchased in the Spiritual Growth area titled JUST FOR TODAY by Saint John XXIII. Don t be put off by the fact that it was written for children the message is meant for everyone. This makes a total of eleven books from the 2017 Reading List that have been purchased for our library. We are a blessed people. Lavonne Shearer, Librarian SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS SEPTEMBER 17 TH!!! Sunday School will start September 17 th, followed by our 2 nd Annual Pavillion Potluck! Please plan on celebrating with Jesus at Sunday School, church and then a fun afternoon at 3 p.m. with all church members!! The Education Committee is EXCITED for a new year of youth fellowship!! Also, if you are 5 years of age and older, stop by and visit Youth Group on Wednesday nights starting August 30! Be sure to bring Mom or Dad so they can sign you up!!

6 8 An Update from the Trustees Committee It s been a busy few months making decisions concerning a few overdue projects at our church. Here is an update of what you can expect to see happening in the next few months: 1. Cleaning Masonry Repair and Paint Renaissance Restoration has started a three-week project of removing the black mildew on the south sanctuary building, as well as a thorough cleaning. There are a number of tuck-pointing issues, that will be fixed as well as the steps to the south door. Both towers will get a fresh coat of industrial paint, and trim work will be touched up as well. 2. Jaeger Roofing Company The installation of a new roof on the sanctuary building is scheduled for early October. The roof will be a decra-coated metal shingle with a fifty-year warranty. The two towers do not need re-shingled, as they were redone in Jaeger Roofing is a roofing company with many years of experience, mainly with churches. 3. Salvation Army Building The demolition of this building will be taking place soon. A survey company is doing the drawings we will need to turn that space into a cement parking lot. There are plans to have an area or green space in the curb area between the new and old lots. The Trustee Committee would like to thank the hard work and smart investment decisions of the Foundation Committee for funding the Renaissance Restoration and Jaeger Roofing projects. The Salvation Army Building demolition will be paid with funding borrowed from the sale of the 8th Street parsonage (per Book of Discipline and North Central District guidelines). All of these projects fit perfectly within the parameters of what the Foundation and the parsonage funds dictate. The spiritual growth study will be based on the book Living as a Covenant Community. In addition, participatns can choose to study either the geographic study Missionary Conferences of the United Methodist Church in the U.S. or the social issue study Climate Justice: Call to Hope and Action. Registration is $125 and is due September 20. In addition, there will be a Youth/Teen study In Mission Together, and a Children s study Joined and Held Together. The cost for teens to attend is $75 and it is $50 for children. There is money available to help pay the registration fee. 7 9 THANKSGIVING COMMUNITY DINNER Just a reminder that Mike Cleaveland stepped down as the coordinator of this event as of last year, therefore we need someone to step-up as the NEW COORDINATOR. There is very easy to follow step by step written directions and already a large crew of volunteers. We just need someone to make sure everything is done and ready to serve our members and friends of the community. If you would like to accept this volunteer position or need more information you may contact Jeri Nerem, Adm. Council Chair.
