1 0CT0BER 2018 Messenger - page 1 The Messenger OCTOBER 2018 A monthly publication from First United Methodist Church of Boone. In this issue From the Pastor 1 Worship Volunteers 2 Congregation 2 United Methodist Women 3 Mentoring 4 Outreach Committee 4 Church Directory Online 4 This and That 5 Budget Report 6 Calendar 7 Coffee Fellowship Schedule 7 Blanket Sundays 8 First UMC - Boone 703 Arden Street PO Box 206 Boone, Iowa The mission of the Boone First United Methodist Church is to glorify God by nurturing disciples to live and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Hatch em - Match em & Dispatch em From the Pastor I am sitting at my desk getting ready for the State of the Church meeting on September 23 rd and I am remembering. I am looking over a list of names. Each name has a face. Each name has a memory. Each and every one of these names is connected to someone that I am connected to as well. In the past 12 months, I have officiated at or attended funerals for 22 good folks who I had a connection and relationship with. Thirteen of these names are folks that you all had relationships with too. Ten of them were members of First UMC. Three of them were connected to us in some way. As we remember and celebrate where we have been as a congregation as we intentionally pause to recognize who God has called us to be in this present moment and as we open ourselves to who God is calling us to be in the coming months and years a significant part of that celebration, pause, and openness is our witness of those who have been with us along the way. We will lift those names at our meeting on September 23 rd and we will celebrate the legacy they leave with us. On the first Sunday of November (November 4 th ) we will be celebrating All Saint s Day in both of our worship services. It is our tradition to light votive candles in memory and celebration of each name lifted. The 22 names I am looking at right now will each have a candle lit in their memory. I invite and encourage you to add to this celebration the names of those who have gone on before us in the past year, and who touched your life in incredible and powerful ways. Please inform us in the office that we may be able to lift their name and celebrate that they will always be a gift from God. Blessings Pastor Doug

4 0CT0BER 2018 Messenger - page 4 GREAT OPPORTUNITY! Have you ever considered being a mentor? Youth & Shelter Services hosts an amazing mentor program for youth in seven different school districts. Due to lack of mentors, one-third of the students that ask for a mentor was without one. Did you know?? 55% more of youth mentored attend college; 78% more volunteer in their community; and 46% more refrain from using drugs. There were 114 youth served in the school year, but 27 were seeking mentors and did not benefit from the program. Your commitment is to meet once weekly for approximately 45 minutes, Sept. through May; Ames does facilitate summer mentoring. Matches play board games, color, shoot hoops, or just sit and chit-chat. For more information, there are brochures on the table in the Narthex or request an application at fwatkins@yss.org. MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A STUDENTS LIFE!
