2 2 A message from Pastor Doug I had hospital call recently in Des Moines. I got into the elevator and pushed the button for the floor I wanted. The door shut and everything got real quiet. It didn t seem like anything was happening and as I waited, I began to wonder to myself When is this thing going to start moving. Suddenly the door opened and I realized that I had moved up several floors without even knowing it. --There was no jolt to indicate I had started moving. --There was no sound to indicate I was moving. --There was no bump at the end to indicate I had been moving. I never even realized I was moving. It was kind of an eerie feeling. Since then, I ve noticed the same thing happens a lot in life. We move and don t even know it. Ever since my elevator experience, I ve been thinking about this idea of movement, and growth, and being intentional about it. Let me show you what I mean. When I was a little bugger, Saturday nights were usually spent watching Marshall Matt Dillon save the day on Gunsmoke and other than always trying to outdraw the Marshall at the beginning of every program, I rarely saw any killing on TV. Miss Kitty was apparently the Marshall s girlfriend, but if anything inappropriate ever happened no one ever knew it. BUT GUESS WHAT the elevator door has opened and we re on a different floor. There was no jolt when it started moving. No sound to indicate it was moving. No bump to indicate we had been moving but things have changed. Prime-time programming today makes no apologies for the lack of family values more often than not it s glorified. We were moving and we didn t even know it. Kind of an eerie feeling. There was a day when things were simpler or so it seemed. I don t remember locking our doors at night. We never locked our car doors when we parked them on main street. If we ever did lock the car door, it was intended to keep the neighbors from unloading all the extra squash and zucchini from their garden that they couldn t use. BUT GUESS WHAT the elevator door has opened and we re on a different floor. Things have changed. We were moving and didn t even know it. Kind of an eerie feeling. I guess what I am looking for is an anchor. I am looking for a lens by which to focus. It s pretty easy to just drift and not even know that you re drifting. SO I encourage you, as we take these early steps into the program year be focused on what we are about as a community of the called, be intentional about who it is that we follow and why we follow. Place your donations in Fellowship Hall in/or beside the wodden box designted for school bags. I will sort and box the kits for delivery to Webster City on November 4 th. Questions? Contact Lavonne Shearer at Appreciate and act October is Pastor (or Clergy) Appreciation Month, reminding church members to thank their hardworking ministry leaders. But the people in the pews though they might lack official church titles also play important roles in doing God s work. In User Friendly Churches (Regal Books), researcher George Barna compares the behavior of people in growing vs. stagnant or declining churches. Members of growing churches actively participate in the church s ministry. They did not divorce their faith from their lifestyle; their faith was their lifestyle, Barna writes. They took seriously the classical Reformation doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. By contrast, laypeople in stagnant churches tend to observe rather than participate. They perceived their role as being in the audience in the stands, Barna notes, nodding approvingly in efforts to demonstrate religious behavior as the clergy went through their paces. Appreciate your pastors, but then follow their example by living out your beliefs! SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTED SEPTEMBER 17 TH!!! Sunday School started September 17 th, The Education Committee is EXCITED for a new year of youth fellowship!! Also, if you are 5 years of age and older, stop by and visit Youth Group on Wednesday nights! Be sure to bring Mom or Dad so they can sign you up!! Bring a friend to enjoy the teachings of Jesus!

7 9 VOLUNTEERS FOR YOUTH GROUP We are looking for members to help mentor the youth group. There is devotion time for all youth from 6:30-6:45p and also lesson time from 6:45-8p for the older youth. If you would like to help with either of these, please contact Jennifer Schoff or Pastor Doug at the church. As we all know It takes a village to raise a child. Our youth volunteers are mighty, but few, and if you are able to help, it would be a great blessing. Imagine if all of us took one week to share; our calendar would be full for a couple of years! PIZZA RANCH YOUTH FUNDRAISER Wednesday, October 4 th 5p-9p Please join us for a pizza buffet! Every adult buffet purchased will earn $2 towards our youth, who will be bussing tables! We, the helpers, are to be there in the lounge at 5:30 and the activity director there will direct us to where help is needed. Helpers are to come in the door at 715 West 3rd.
