1 FEBRUARY 2019 Messenger - page 1 The Messenger FEBRUARY 2019 A monthly publication from First United Methodist Church of Boone. In this issue From the Pastor 1 Worship Volunteers 2 Valentines Day 2 United Methodist Women 3 This and That 4 Budget Report 5 Calendar 6 Coffee Fellowship 6 Schedule February Quotes 7 If this is to be a Happy New Year, a year of usefulness, a year in which we shall live to make this earth better, it is because God will direct our pathway. How important then, to feel our dependence upon Him! - Matthew Simpson First UMC - Boone 703 Arden Street PO Box 206 Boone, Iowa The mission of the Boone First United Methodist Church is to glorify God by nurturing disciples to live and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. Hatch em - Match em & Dispatch em From the Pastor The writer of Hebrews encourages us Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. The Christian life is often described using a race metaphor. Many times I have heard the old adage It s a marathon, not a sprint. That s good advice stay the course, be patient, focus on the goal. I ve noticed in my life, though, that there are moments which are best described by another type of race a relay race. In the midst of transitions, that s the metaphor that works for me. In a relay race, the baton is passed from one runner to another. The runner holding the baton approaches the new runner at full speed, meaning the new runner must quickly accelerate at just the right time. After the baton pass takes place, the first runner stops participating in the race. The baton is the only object in the relay race that travels the entire distance of the race. It will cross the finish line in the hand of the last runner, just like it started out in the hand of the first runner but each runner will receive credit for the team's victory. If we imagine our lives to be like a relay race, we can see that each step of the way, each leg of the journey, depends upon the leg before and each leg that will follow. It also involves GIVING and TAKING the baton. Many of you I am sure have heard that Miss Jodie and my time here at First UMC in Boone will be coming to a close. On July 1 st I will be entering into the ministry of District Superintendent for the South East District of the United Methodist Church. The baton will be passed. Handing off the baton is never automatic. It takes practice. It requires attention as well as intention. Over the course of the next 5 months, we will have opportunities for celebration and consternation, we will dance and we will cry and in the midst of it all, we will run our leg of the race with perseverance and faithfulness. We will remember those from whom we have received the baton, and we will fix our eyes on an unknown future knowing that God is with us in both the GIVING and the TAKING of the baton. Thank you for the faithful and faith-filled ministry that springs forth from with-in the walls of the First UMC of Boone. Miss Jodie and I are honored to run one more lap with you. Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Thank you for your generosity and gifts during the Christmas season. We have been blessed to be a part of the community and the on-going ministry and mission of the Boone First UMC. --Miss Jodie and Pastor Doug

FEBRUAY 14, 2019 The first Valentine's Day was in the year 496! In searching for the Origin of Valentines Day this is one that appeared in several of the sights. Thought I would share for some Valentine Fun!! The day gets its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was. The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine". Having a particular Valentine's Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February - officially the start of their springtime. It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married. Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too. Gradually, St Valentine's name started to be used by people to express their feelings to those they loved.

4 THIS AND THAT!! FEBRUARY 2019 Messenger - page 4 Thought this was worth printing again. Pastor Doug s Sermon on Jan. 13, If you did not get a bookmark that day this is what was on it. Side 1 From John Wesley s General Rules: #1 Do No Harm, #2 Do Good, #3 Stay in love with God. Side 2 Wesley s Covenant Prayer: I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all tings, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. Prayer is a positive act of peace and love. As United Methodists, we pledge to uphold our church family and staff with our prayers. I would like to say Thank You for all the cards and prayers during my hip replacement surgery and recovery. Everything has healed well and working great. Your love and concern was much appreciated. Alan Schoff The FRUIT of the SPIRIT (One a Month) LOVE (Greek: agape) -- seeks the highest good of others. Love is not based on emotions or feelings. It is a decision to be committed to the well being of others without any conditions or circumstances. --John 3:16; John 13:9; John 15:12-14 (references) Let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. (1 John 4:7-12) REMINDER Every third Thursday at 6:00pm is Laundry Soap- Making! The soap made is donated to IMPACT for their clients to use, as well as some of our own church members. If you have never helped out, stop by! It is fun and we have lots of laughs (last month Alan Schoff and Justin Crocheck were singing Roy Clark songs in remembrance of him!) Also, every third week donations of food/toiletries are asked for IMPACT. Of course, you can donate every week if you wish, but we like to take the items donated to IMPACT so the first of the month they have plenty of options. Thank you, Church Family for ALL of your support for this amazing ministry. Without YOU, many people and fami- HELP!! The youth need folks to sign-up to provide a light supper for them on Wednesday nights at 6:00pm. They meet until May 15th and at present there are several open dates. The sign-up sheet is on the table by the Sanctuary doors. Would you consider providing this service for our youth and youth workers one Wednesday night before the end of their season? If you have any questions about what to fix or for how many people, have a chat with Jennifer Schoff.
