1 St. James Catholic Church Seguin, TX August 7, 2016 Notes from the Pastor Mercy This Week This weekend we welcome Deacon Bob Leibrecht who will be speaking at our two scheduled Coffee House, this Sunday, in the parish hall. My thanks and appreciation to all the adults, young adults, cooking team, Guardian Angels, teen leaders, and teens from St. James and Our Lady of Guadalupe who attended last week s Teen ACTS Retreat. Fr. Peter and I were very blessed to be part of the activities on Friday night and Saturday. What a joyous return celebration of the Eucharist we had at the Sunday noon Mass. God bless all of you as I am proud of all of you. Thank you Joey for all the hard work that you did. Adoration Chapel Upgrade We have installed new track lighting in the Adoration Chapel that will provide better light at night time. It will be on a timer. We are in the process of fixing the ceiling fan as well. My thanks to Deacon Victor for overseeing this upgrade. Upcoming Fall Festival Please mark you calendars for our upcoming Annual Fall Festival: September 24 (Saturday) and September 25 (Sunday). Let us all please support Johnny and Marlene Sauceda, our Festival Chairpersons. Raffle tickets will be mailed soon. I ask that each family either sell or purchase your raffle tickets. Please DO NOT RETURN tickets. We all must do our part. God bless all of our volunteers. More details to follow. There will be a festival meeting next Wednesday, August 10 at 7PM, in the Parish Hall Boardroom, see article on page 4. Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday s Parable of the rich fool delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing now: You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside the Master s house will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus own mercy in the compassion of Jesus modern-day disciples? Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Papal quotes Copyright 2015, Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission. Reflection question: How do you recognize a holy person? How is being merciful a sign of holiness? The Sanctuary Candle is offered In Thanksgiving for God s Sustaining Grace August 6 - August 13 Thank you for your continued support & generosity. Stewardship for the weekend of 7/31/16 MASS OFFERING: $9, CHILDREN S: $ BUILDING FUND: $75.00 Altar Flowers are given to the Glory of God and In Loving Memory of Gertrude Gajdos and Oliver Gomez

4 IN THIS YEAR OF MERCY Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel. In The Face of Mercy, Pope Francis says that it is essential that we live and testify to mercy. We are reflecting on and acting on the 14 Works of Mercy this year. In August, as we make plans to begin a new school year, we focus on the Spiritual Work of Mercy Instruct the Ignorant. The word ignorant is often used in a condescending or demeaning way, but let s use it simply to refer to someone who is unlearned or unaware. This Work of Mercy calls us to help people to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord. It is solidly grounded in the Gospels, which show Jesus to be a teacher who sent his disciples out to teach. He said, make disciples of all nations... teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (Mt. 28:19-20) To instruct the ignorant is to proclaim the Gospel. This can be done in a classroom, but more importantly, it is done around the dinner table, in our workplaces, on vacation, in volunteer work, at the gas station and at the dry cleaner. Instruction doesn t have to take place in formal educational environment. Every day we make Jesus present to those around us through our words and actions. Every day we announce Christ to the world by our works of mercy. We are witnesses. Education is more about changing hearts and minds and forming character than it is about imparting information. Each of us still needs a changed heart. Each one of us is still on a path of conversion, of turning to the Lord. In other words, we are still learning learning our Faith, learning how to be God s merciful presence in the world, learning how to be disciples of Christ. So, we all are instructors and we all need instruction. To continue to learn (become more learned, not unlearned), we must hear the Word of God that comes to us in various ways. We need to be aware, not unaware, of our encounters with Christ each day. To teach requires understanding. The only way to grasp the Gospel more fully is to live it. This month, let s live this Work of Mercy by walking the walk even more than talking the talk. Then every day can be a day of teachable moments. Every day truly is full of learning and growing in faith. Teachable MOMENTS
5 An Invitation to the Ministry of Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist Your willingness to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, reflects not only a response to your Baptismal call to serve the people of God, but a commitment to Christ as you share in the preaching, teaching and leading aspects of the church. You offer the Eucharist, recognize the Body of Christ in those to whom you offer Eucharist and ultimately you act as the Body of Christ by fully participating in the life of the parish and the wider community. Your willingness to commit to a monthly schedule, to prepare properly for your service and to arrive on time dressed appropriately for Mass, further reflects that commitment. Jesus said " Come follow me, I will make you fishers of Men". Come join us. Training Sessions August 9, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Church August 18, 2016 at 6:30 pm in the Church You need attend only 1 of the Training Sessions A Prayer for Eucharistic Ministers O Spirit of Wisdom and Truth, with gratitude I accept this great opportunity to feed your poor and hungry people. Cleanse me and forgive me for all of my offenses. Let me be a pure vessel to bring the Bread of Life to God s people. I am only a servant at the foot of the Cross. As the blood from your wounds spills upon me, allow me to place it in the chalice of your mercy and give it to your people to drink. Allow me to carry your broken and wounded body in my arms and present you to those who hunger. And if I should wander from the flock, come and find me, Lord. Nurture me, forgive me, and feed me, so that once again I may become one of the gardeners to take care of your precious rose the Church upon the earth. Amen. Requirements A registered Parishioner Received the sacrament of confirmation and In good sacramental standing with the Church A Desire to serve God For More Information Feel free to speak to any of the Eucharistic Ministers that serve at our Masses and talk with them about their experience as a Eucharistic Minister. 6 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. James Coffee House Sunday, Sept. 11 Beatitudes in our Time Presenter: Fr.
