1 St. James Catholic Church Seguin, TX May 22, 2016 Notes from the Pastor We congratulate Dr. James Garza who will be ordained to the permanent diaconate next Saturday at St. Mary s University. Dr. Garza will be preaching at the Sunday Masses on May 29. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. We are blessed to have him and his wife, Pat, serve here at St. James. There will be a welcoming reception after the Sunday Masses. Next weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord. We give thanks that we as Catholics receive the real presence of Christ who shed his blood for us. Likewise, we celebrate Memorial Day for those men and women who shed their blood to protect our freedom. Please make every effort to attend the 7AM Memorial Day Prayer Service on May 30 at St. James. Deacon Victor will be leading the service. My thanks to Joey Gutierrez, our Youth Minister, and his Core Team for conducting a wonderful Confirmation retreat at Mo Ranch this past weekend. I was truly impressed with the faith of our young people. They received the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe. As we prepare the upcoming parish directory, please contact us at or Linda Kay at , if you do NOT want your address or phone # in the directory. We are creating a St James Youth Scholarship Fund. This year we had seven deserving wonderful young people receiving these scholarships. We will be accepting contributions throughout the year for this fund. Thank you for your generosity in supporting our youth and today s leaders. Please pick up your directory photo at the parish office. Mercy This Week Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God s self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God s most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as Merciful and Kind, believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination. Do you see yourself and others in the light of the Spirit of God? Thank you for your continued support & generosity. Veteran s Ministry Update For centuries our veterans have protected our freedom, and American way of life with courage, bravery, leadership, and for some, with their lives. Every day these men and women stand guard to fulfill their oath to preserve the Constitution and defend our nation. In support of our veterans, St. James Parish has formed a Veterans Ministry. Our mission is to bring the Gospel of Christ to veterans and their families and to help them with their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being. Our next meeting is June 6 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Family Center. All veterans of the parish are encouraged to attend. 5 Come to Me! Feast of Corpus Christi Procession Eucharistic Procession led by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller Celebration will begin with the noon Mass on May 29 at San Fernando Cathedral. Procession will begin immediately after Mass and will end at San Francesco Di Paolo Parish. Please bring flower petals to line the procession route. PRIEST PENSION FUND This fund supports the pension for priests who have reached retirement age. This year there will be 73 priests receiving pensions. After faithfully serving many years in the Lord s vineyard, the Priest Pension Plan ensures that our semi and fully retired priests may have a dignified retirement by being able to pay for the many expenses encountered in retirement. As the average age of priests continues to rise and priests, along with the general population, live longer lives, there is a greater need than ever to ensure the viability and strength of our pension. Please be generous in making a donation on the weekend of Jun 4/5 to support our Archdiocesan Priest Pension Plan. STORAGE FACILITY NEEDED We are in need of a storage facility for donated auction items for our festival. If you have a storage space that is dry, with solid floors and can be locked, that is conveniently located close to the parish, and if you can donate the space for our use, we need you! We have donated items coming in already. If you are able to help, please call the church office. Archdiocesan Feasibility Study The Archdiocese of San Antonio will be conducting a feasibility study throughout the summer, and Archbishop Gustavo would like to hear from you. The study will gather feedback on a potential Archdiocesan-wide capital campaign, and high participation is needed so that Archbishop can make informed decisions on whether to move forward. The Steier Group, a Catholic development and fundraising firm out of Omaha, NE, has been hired to conduct the study, which will begin in June and end in August. Potential campaign elements to be addressed include investing in our schools, growing our campus ministries and young adult programs, funding our increasing number of vocations to the priesthood and diaconate, expanding our evangelization efforts, enhancing our programs for the poor and marginalized, and most importantly, ensuring that each of our parishes is strong and vibrant. Parishioners will have access to a fact sheet that details all of the identified needs and will be asked to respond in a variety of ways. Some people will be personally interviewed, or you will have the option to mail in a survey, go online to answer questions, and/or attend a town hall meeting at a local parish. There will be regular updates in our bulletin throughout the survey with more information on how you can participate. Stay tuned! Drinks will be provided. PRIEST APPRECIATION LUNCHEON WHEN: Sunday, June 5th, in the Parish Hall, after the 12PM Mass Everyone is invited to come and join us as we honor, celebrate and appreciate Fr. Dennis & Fr. Greg for their diligence in serving our parish and community. This is a POT LUCK luncheon, so bring your favorite main dish, side dish, or dessert to share.
