1 Trinity Trumpet Trinity Lutheran Church 295 Shaul Avenue ~ Ottumwa, IA ~ Pastor: Rev. James Preus ~ Pastor s jamespreus@gmail.com Message from Pastor November 2017 Happy All Saints Day! We will celebrate All Saints Day on Wednesday, November 1 st at 7:15 PM with a Divine Service. On this day we thank God for all the saints, who have gone before us. We thank God that he showed them great mercy. And we thank God that he gave them to us as such examples of faith and good works. The Gospel lesson for All Saints Day is from Matthew chapter five. I would like to focus on just one verse here: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." We hunger and thirst for all sorts of things. Yes, food and drink, but also cars, houses, peace and quiet, a better job, a safer neighborhood, a more vibrant church, etc. And yet, no matter how rich we are we aren't satisfied. There is always better food, a better job, more money, a better church. We are insatiable. But that's how it goes for those who hunger and thirst for earthly things. But the one thing all the saints have in common is that they hungered and thirsted for righteousness. What is righteousness. Well, to be righteous means to be innocent of all sin and to be declared in a right relationship with God. To have righteousness is to have Jesus Christ and citizenship in heaven. We've learned that to be given righteousness means to be justified. We are justified by faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by our own works. What is a saint? A saint is a holy person. To be holy means that you are set apart for God and are without sin. Well, how can we be holy? How can we be saints? The same way the saints before us became saints. They received Christ's righteousness as a gift. This means they hungered and thirsted for Christ and his righteousness. They desired to be forgiven of all their sins by grace and to be justified by God. Unlike everything else that we might hunger and thirst for, righteousness truly satisfies. To be justified by God, forgiven, made into a saint forever, this is the most satisfying thing in the world. If you have Christ's righteousness, then you are satisfied for eternity. If you do not have Christ's righteousness, then you will be in want for eternity. So, I encourage you all to follow in the footsteps of those who have gone before you, to hunger and thirst for that, which truly satisfies. Hunger and thirst for Jesus, his forgiveness, life, and salvation. God will not leave you hungry. Yours in Christ, Pastor Preus

The Altar Guild met Tuesday, October 3 rd at 6pm. Those present were Gail Bainbridge, David Raebel, Kim Ansley, Dawn Lewis and Pastor Preus. Pastor opened with prayer and reading from the catechism. The altar guild covered the following topics: Flowers: David Raebel opened the discussion of the use of fresh flowers. We are going to look into using fresh flowers every Sunday either an arrangement that someone has signed up for, a simple flower and greenery or a live plant. Our hope is that the congregation will be reminded of the sacrifice of Christ by seeing the live flower(s) that has been sacrificed. Calendar and schedule for setting up Communion: It was decided that the Saturday set ups will be assigned each week. Jennifer Jones will set up the first and second Saturdays of the month. Theresa Preus will set the third Saturday. Dawn Lewis will set up the fourth Saturday. Kim Ansley will continue to clean up on Sunday mornings before service. Gail Bainbridge and Kim Ansley will continue to clean up on Sunday mornings after service. If one of the members cannot set up on their weekend, they are to contact another member to cover for them. If there is no one available, the elders are to be contacted. Setting the Lord s Table: Pastor reviewed the setting of the elements on the altar. The new size wafer is working out fine. We are still ordering wine from Hy-Vee Drug. They are happy to accommodate our needs. Red and green chalice veils: Kim Ansley is looking into replacing these two veils. She will keep the group posted. Banners: David Raebel has come up with an idea for hanging banners. He has a roof rake that can be used to hang the banners. We will need to have hooks installed to use it. New candle stand(s) for communion candle: Kim Ansley found some candle sticks that would coordinate with our brass vases. We do not want to have the communion candle smaller than our present altar candles. So, we will need to look into getting specific candle socket size. We also talked about replacing the two candles behind the altar, if needed, to match/coordinate with the new communion candles. Kim Ansley will be looking into this and bring information to our next meeting. Plans were also discussed for the following upcoming festivals/feast/special services: Reformation (observed): Sunday, October 29 th. Paraments will be red. Pastor will be preaching on Tuesday, October 31 st at Faith Lutheran Church, Mt. Pleasant. All Saint s Day: Wednesday, November 1 st at 7:15 pm. This will be a Divine Service with Holy Communion. Paraments will be white.

3 Thanksgiving: Wednesday, November 22 nd at 7 pm. This will be a Divine Service with Holy Communion. Paraments will be white. Advent services: The Wednesday evening Advent services will be December 6 th, 13 th and 20 th at 7:15 pm. Decorating Church: Decorating the church for Christmas will be Saturday, December 2 nd at 9 am. Poinsettias: Gail Bainbridge will be taking care of this project. She will be getting information out to the congregation when the holiday gets closer. Christmas Eve: Sunday the 24 th there will be two services 10 am and 7 pm. We may want to cut down on the wafers/cups for the Saturday evening service of that weekend and maybe for the 10 am service. Paraments, banners and the advent wreath will need to be changed out between services. Paraments will be white. Extra wafers and cups should be added for the 7pm service on the 24 th. Christmas Day: Monday, the 25 th at 9 am. This will be a Divine Service with Holy Communion. The weekend of January 6 th and 7 th will have two different services: Epiphany: Saturday, January 6th at 6pm. This will be a Divine Service with Holy Communion. The Baptism of Our Lord: Sunday, January 7 th at 10 am. This will be a Divine Service with Holy Communion. David Raebel told us about the upcoming Mission Sunday on December 3 rd. He was telling us that the elders would like all the organizations in the church to have a small display. This display should give information about the Altar Guild. We will be getting together to discuss and gather the needed items for this display. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 6 th at 6 pm. We will be planning for the upcoming Lenten/Easter season. Ash Wednesday will be Wednesday, February 14 th, Pastor led us in closing with the Lord s Prayer.

5 Thanks Be to God! Our loan of $40,000 with The Lutheran Church Extension Fund for the parsonage remodel and roof repair has been paid off. God has blessed us richly in many ways. Most recently with a gift from the Jack Finney estate that allowed us to pay off this loan. However, it was the many members of the congregation that have been good stewards of the gifts that God has given them that made this possible. To all those that gave of their talents and labor and helped at the parsonage so that we could save money, Thank You, to those that gave when we first started to remodel so that we didn t have to borrow more money, Thank You! To all of you who have given money over the past 3 years to help pay down the principal of the loan again, Thank You! There will be more challenges ahead as there always are, but we can always depend on God to bless us and give us what we need when we need it. Our general fund account is behind at this point in the year so perhaps if you feel God has given you enough you might consider redirecting your offering that took care of the loan to help us get the general fund brought up to a better level. There will be a stewardship program later this year that will help us to see how God has truly blessed us and how to use those Blessings of Time, Talent & Treasures for his Good. Volunteers needed! After repairs to the ceilings from leaks and old age they are now ready to be painted. Some areas need primed & painted while others just need painted. It is always hard to get a work day set up when it works for everyone so while we still might have a work day at a later date for the time being we are asking for volunteers to help paint all the ceilings in the church at whatever time works best for you. You may paint a hallway, a room or two or whatever you wish to tackle. Primer, paint, rollers & tape will be provided. We have some covers and some roller handles here. What you would need to bring with you are, ladders, rags, roller handles and roller pans, paint brushes for trimming and perhaps an empty painting pail. The cost for the paint & supplies will be around $ If you are unable to paint perhaps you could help with the cost or BOTH. If you can help with this please contact Bill Ansley at or b.ansley@mchsi.com and I will be more than happy to get you and the paint together. Once again, Thanks Be To God! Bill Ansley; President

10 Trinity Lutheran's Cookie Walk will be hosted by LWML on Saturday, December 2nd, from 11am to 1pm! We want to raise funds so we can give a big portion of the proceeds to help with the church's deficit in Trinity's General Fund. However, to make it a success, we are in need of all members of Trinity to join us! There are lots of ways to help, but the best way is to bake cookies to donate! However, if you don't bake cookies, you could make homemade candy, donate an item for the lunch that will be served, help set up, help the day of the cookie walk, help to clean up, help sit at one of the other booths that we will have, and the list goes on! Speaking of the other booths, we will be selling "Starla's Seasonings" once again; also, the youth will be having a "Christmas Shop" where the younger children can purchase gifts for other family members. [Please see the signup sheets in the narthex or respond positively if you get a call for assistance.] We hope that all members, along with their friends, will come out to purchase some special Christmas cookies, have a good lunch, and enjoy some wonderful fellowship with others! Remember: Saturday, December 2nd from 11am to 1pm! We're looking forward to it, so come and bring your friends!
