CENTERING THOUGHT Perhaps the World Ends Here By Joy Harago The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live. The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on. We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it. It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women. At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers.

2 Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table. This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun. Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory. We have given birth on this table, and have prepared our parents for burial here. At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks. Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite. APPROACHING GOD Please silence your cell phone before worship begins. 4 *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore Eternal God, we are people with eyes that do not see, ears that do not hear, and faith that is mixed with doubt. You have called us your people, but we live as though you were distant and far away. Your vision for the world is so different from what we see around us that we discount your word, despair of change, and grow cynical in response. O God, forgive our despair and our stubbornness. Give us faith to see, beyond touch and sight, some sign of your realm. And, where vision fails, help us to trust your love which never fails. Acolytes in worship today are Jameson Hittle and Sam Banks. MUSIC IN WORSHIP Bob Chilcott, a British musician, is a singer, teacher, and composer. Before moving on to focus more fully on choral composition, he was a member of the world famous ensemble, The King's Singers. He has acted as conductor and music administrator at the Royal College of Music in London. Jean Berger, a German born Jew, was in fact born Arthur Schloßberg; he changed his name after moving to Paris to escape the Nazi regime. In his prime, Berger toured South America and the United States as a performing pianist.
