LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE *INTROIT Make a Joyful Noise The Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively) What would it be like if we could trust God completely? What would it be like if we were aware of God s presence with us all the time? What would it be like if we could worship God with our whole heart, holding nothing back? In worship, we catch a glimpse of such whole-hearted, unrestrained faith. In worship, we draw near to the God who is always drawing near to us. In worship, we present ourselves honestly, just as we are, and sense that God accepts us as we are and understands. Let us worship God together and listen to what God is speaking to us. *HYMN For the Beauty of the Earth UMH 92 *OPENING PRAYER (in Unison) O God, we draw near to you this morning, to hear you and to attend to your word. Silence the busyness of our minds. Quiet the voices that compete for our attention. Undistract us, O Holy One, that we might listen closely for your word to us. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON Mark 7:31-37 (Common English Bible) 31 After leaving the region of Tyre, Jesus went through Sidon toward the Galilee Sea through the region of the Ten Cities. 32 Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly speak, and they begged him to place his hand on the man for healing. 33 Jesus took him away from the crowd by himself and put his fingers in the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 Looking into heaven, Jesus sighed deeply and said, Ephphatha, which means, Open up. 35 At once, his ears opened, his twisted tongue was released, and he began to speak clearly. 2

36 Jesus gave the people strict orders not to tell anyone. But the more he tried to silence them, the more eagerly they shared the news. 37 People were overcome with wonder, saying, He does everything well! He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who can t speak. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY PRAYER (In Unison) All that we do is in your holy name, O God. Even as we share the riches of our labors, may we continue to honor your name in all that we do. Bless these gifts given freely, that your justice and mercy may prevail in a weak and weary world. Amen. OFFERTORY *PRESENTATION OF GIFTS Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *HYMN He Touched Me UMH 367 *A STATEMENT OF FAITH OF THE KOREAN METHODIST CHURCH UMH 884 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE SILENT & PASTORAL PRAYERS THE LORD S PRAYER SUNG IN UNISON Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ANTHEM Whisper to My Heart Duet: Linda Minetree & Dean Shinn SERMON Are You Listening? Rev. Candee Martin 3

*CLOSING HYMN Open My Eyes, That I May See UMH 454 *COMMISSIONING AND BLESSING Your face, Jesus, is in every person we meet today, rich and poor, celebrated and unknown. Your love is present, hidden though it might be, in everyone. With your word as our guide and your life as our example we pledge to work at removing assumptions and restoring the truth of your Living Word, present in all as we listen with the ears of our hearts to your still small voice, to one another, and to all the world. Thanks be to God. Amen. *POSTLUDE 4

Who is looking for a church home? There are many categories of people with a heightened readiness to find a church. These individuals will be most open to receiving invitations to visit your congregation and get involved. It s helpful to identify people with this readiness to find a church by brainstorming categories of people who might be most receptive to a church for example, people who are new to the neighborhood or have recently returned to the community or inactive members who have faced a recent change or a challenge to their health, employment, or family status. Divorced or widowed individuals ~ People who are recently divorced may welcome a personal invitation to attend worship as well as the company of a member. Similarly, those who have lost a spouse or other loved one often experience a heightened interest in connecting with a community of faith. Many people testify about how one person made the difference by inviting them to come at just the right time in their lives. Walking into a new church for the first time can be daunting for anyone, but a person who has been part of a couple for years (or decades!) may find it especially awkward or uncomfortable to be suddenly single. For some, sitting alone in the pew may be sufficient reason not to attend. Entering the fellowship hall for coffee hour alone could be terrifying. Recently divorced persons may also wonder if they will be judged for the dissolution of their marriage. Those facing health or employment challenges ~ Many people in our social circles will at some time in their lives receive an unfavorable health diagnosis. Would you consider coming to church with me? could be a golden invitation at a time when their receptivity is high. Today, even the highest-level professionals lose jobs because their employer downsized, reorganized, moved away, or eliminated the position. This can come as a shock to a worker who thought all was going well. Perhaps they have a readiness to add a spiritual dimension to how they process what is happening to them. What can it hurt to invite them to join you at church? Inactive members wanting to return home ~ A member who has become inactive may feel awkward about returning. The inactive member may want to return but does not want to be bombarded with well-meaning curiosity or misplaced humor. ( Look who s coming to church today! Oh my, the walls of the church may come tumbling down. ) Here is where more than a passing invitation could be cherished. There are many other categories of people with a heightened readiness to find a new faith community or return to the church they once attended. Identity those individuals or types of people and reach out to them. Being sensitive to those with a heightened 13

readiness will yield a better response to your invitations than just randomly inviting people. ~ Lewis Center for Church Leadership United Methodist News Service launches UM news site ~ United Methodist News Service (UMNS), the official newsgathering agency of The United Methodist Church, has announced the launch of its new stand-alone website, UMNews.org. UMNews.org allows for a better reader experience filled with engaging multimedia content and beautiful photographs that illustrate the news stories, said news editor Vicki Brown. Check out the new website at Commission on a Way Forward Q&A Event ~ If you have questions about the Commission on a Way Forward, the Commission s reports going before General Conference 2019 or GC 2019 itself attend A Way Forward: a Q&A event with Bishop Sharma D. Lewis, the Rev. Tom Berlin and Ms. Martha Stokes. The 90-minute event will be held on Wednesday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at Reveille UMC, 4200 Cary Street Rd, Richmond, VA Bishop Lewis, the Rev.
