You did not choose me, but I chose you! Jesus speaks these words to us today. Jesus forgives us and chooses us to be his friends, sharing his great work of love in the world. Hallelujah! Thanks be to God. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON John 15:9-17 (The Message) 9-10 I ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you ll remain intimately at home in my love. That s what I ve done kept my Father s commands and made myself at home in his love I ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I m no longer calling you servants because servants don t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I ve named you friends because I ve let you in on everything I ve heard from the Father. 16 You didn t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you. 17 But remember the root command: Love one another. 8 Friday, May 6 6:00 pm We will be showing the newest Star Wars movie (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The movie is FREE and open to those 18 years old and older as we will be having a discussion time afterwards. We will have soft drinks, pizza, popcorn, and a brownie bar. There will be free childcare available but reservations are required by May 1. 9 There will be a Project Crossroads meeting TODAY right after the 11:00 am service in the Crouse Classroom. The Project Crossroads Mission Trip is set for July If you have any questions, contact Allen Langford. You ve been waiting!! The RED ROOM is now open again! The Red Room is a place (first floor of Education wing, next to the Fisher Class) where we take your gently used discards and sell them at events we have here at church like Bay Days and our Christmas Bazaar. We can t take clothing or electronics but just about anything else. If you have any questions, please contact Brad Allsbrook ( ). Don t forget to shop because you never know what treasure you might find! Ahoy mates! Ye ole festival will be back: Saturday, June 4 from 10:00 am 10:00 pm Sunday, June 5 from Noon 6:00 pm In the coming weeks, we will be asking for volunteers to help hand out water and sell hot dogs. But for now we are collecting 16 oz bottles of water. Donations of water can be left by the canopied entrance. If you have any questions, call the church office ( ). It s time to pass the baton as the saying goes. Mary Stern has faithfully knitted prayer shawls for those recovering from surgery or grieving the loss of a loved one. Mary can no longer continue this ministry. She has instructions and yarn left that she will give to whoever feels led to continue this ministry. 10 Every United Methodist can be part of General Conference 2016 Not every United Methodist is a delegate to General Conference, but there are still ways to participate in General Conference, May 10-20, 2016, in Portland, Ore. Prayer Praying for delegates, bishops, speakers and all those who lead and attend the General Conference sessions is a powerful way to participate. Pray for God to guide the General Conference s decisions, for Christ to lead us into the future and for the Holy Spirit to empower us to go on toward perfection in our love of God and one another. The Upper Room has created 60 Days of Prayer for General Conference You can sign up to receive the daily meditations and prayer prompts by at 60daysofprayer.org. Know your delegates Personalize your prayers by lifting up the delegates and leaders from your Annual Conference by name. Consider also writing a note or , letting them know you are praying for them. The job of a delegate is time-consuming and sometimes stressful. Many lay delegates are giving up vacation time to be there, and the clergy are often spending an extended time away from their congregations. Lift them, their families and their churches in prayer. Follow along Our computers, phones and tablets are giving us more ways to stay connected with General Conference than ever before. GC2016.UMC.org is the source for everything about General Conference Whenever the conference is in session, GC2016.UMC.org will feature live streaming video where you will be able to watch the voting, worship, speeches and celebrations happening on the floor of General Conference. 11 Video explains long-term recovery needed after Feb. 24 tornadoes Nick Ruxton, videographer in the conference Communications office, produced a short video that highlights how the Virginia Conference is moving from the immediate relief phase of disaster response and getting ready to begin long-term recovery from the Feb. 24 tornadoes that caused loss of life, personal injuries and severe property damage in three districts of the conference. The video, along with other videos highlighting ministries of the Virginia Conference, can be found on the conference YouTube channel at and the conference Facebook page at Contributions honor Bishop Cho, fund Spiritual Leadership training Bishop Young Jin Cho will retire from active ministry on Aug. 31 of this year, after having served four years as the episcopal leader of the Virginia Conference. To honor his service, the conference Committee on Episcopacy is inviting Virginia United Methodists to make contributions to the Bishops Foundation endowment to fund training and leadership development for clergy and laity in the area of Spiritual Leadership. In the four years he has been leading our conference, Bishop Cho has consistently emphasized the need for increased prayer and a commitment to spiritual disciplines, said Shirley Cauffman, Committee on Episcopacy chair, so it seems appropriate to honor him by continuing an emphasis on spiritual disciplines through the work of the Bishops Foundation.
