2 *THE GLORIA PATRI UMH 71 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. *A MODERN AFFIRMATION UMH 885 SCRIPTURE LESSON Genesis 22:1-13 (RSV) 22 After these things God tested Abraham, and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here am I. 2 He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mori ah, and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; and he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father! And he said, Here am I, my son. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. So they went both of them together. 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here am I. 12 He said, Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

3 SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 15:11-24 (RSV) 11 And he said, There was a man who had two sons; 12 and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of property that falls to me. And he divided his living between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. 15 So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to himself he said, How many of my father s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants. 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; 23 and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; 24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to make merry. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY PRAYER (In Unison) Lord God, as we acknowledge that all we have has come from You, we now offer back a portion to be used in ministries around the world, in the name of Jesus. Amen. OFFERTORY

13 FUMC Pew Cushion Project Have you noticed something new in the sanctuary lately? With the approval of the Church Council, in late 2016 the Worship Committee embarked on a project to replace our sanctuary pew cushions. After over 36 years of steady service, the former cushions had been showing wear and tear. The church first looked into replacing them in 2007 and again in 2010 and We have now finally completed the project. If you would like to help underwrite this effort with a donation, please fill in the form below and submit it to the church office with your payment. Just as a frame of reference, the total cost of the project was $15,180, approximately $292 per cushion. However, no donation is too large or too small! We hope you will prayerfully consider being a part of this unique opportunity to provide beauty and comfort to those who worship at First United Methodist Church in Hampton for many years to come. FUMC Worship Committee Faith in the Future 2017 FUMC Pew Cushion Project NAME: AMOUNT: IN HONOR OF: IN MEMORY OF: Please clip this portion and return with donation. Dedication is optional. Please make checks out to First UMC with pew cushions on the note line.

14 Choir members enjoy health, spiritual benefits There they are, on the seventh page of the United Methodist Hymnal, Directions for Singing from John Wesley, the founder of Methodism: Sing all Sing lustily and with good courage Sing in time Above all, sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing So shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve here, and reward you when he cometh in the clouds of heaven. Rewards in heaven? Sounds like a good enough reason to sing in a church choir. A common statement about singing in church is To sing is to pray twice. Music is an art form that lifts up ordinary text to another level that inspires us and nurtures our souls. Music is an integral part of how we relate to God, said the Rev. Laura Jaquith Bartlett, program director of the United Methodist Alton L. Collins Retreat Center in Eagle Creek, Ore. Music is one of the most easily accessible type of art in worship. There s nearly always an opportunity to open your mouth and make music together with the rest of the people in that service. Right there you ve got an opportunity to experience the Divine in a different way than just to listen to someone read about God, she said. The benefit of singing with and caring for others goes beyond church walls, as many community choirs will attest. In these days of an increasingly polarized culture, music can be a common bond between peoples. Through music, we can build community, said Dr. Jonathan Palant, Minister of Music at Kessler Park UMC in Dallas, TX. By singing in a choir, regardless where (church, community, university, secondary school, etc.), music becomes the conduit that brings us together in a very safe and equal environment, said Palant. We come together in song; everything else is irrelevant. We come together in worship, in song, in prayer, to learn and to be better citizens of this world. Choral singing also appears to have good health benefits. Preliminary results in several worldwide studies suggest that community choral singing does indeed provide a better quality of life for participants. Increased lung capacity and greater oxygenation of the blood resulting in improved alertness are all associated with singing. Singing is also good for the brain, especially when memorization is involved. Singing is of great interest to neuroscientists as it would seem that there is more of the brain given over to the processing of music than almost any other activity, says Dr. Graham Welch, professor at the Institute of Education in London.
