2 LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE *INTROIT We Have Gathered The Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively) As we sit within this community of faith, so we are fed. Praise and prayer feed our mind and spirit. We are wonderfully fed. The teachings of Jesus guide us to the faithful way. We are graciously fed. The cross of Jesus calls us to the selfless, practical way. We are gloriously fed. The rising of Jesus from death fills us with a timeless, unbounded hope. *HYMN To God Be the Glory UMH 98 *OPENING PRAYER Without you, Lord Jesus, we are an organization, a club, only an institution; for you are the reason for our existence. You are the heart of the church, and your transforming love has shaped the church and will continually be available to all who call upon you. Enter into our presence to enliven our worship, capture our hearts, and guide our actions. Stir in our midst today with a new vision of what it means to be an assembly of your followers in this community. Help us to see our church with your eyes. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON John 6:1-15 (NRSV) 6After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat? 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, Six months 2

3 wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. 15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. GIVING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY PRAYER (In Unison) Generous God, Jesus fed thousands of people with seemingly little effort. Yet, children in our own nation and around the world go hungry every day. Even while we are praying this prayer, someone somewhere has died from starvation and the lack of food. When we share resources through our care-giving ministries, your hand is upon our shoulders, just as it was upon Jesus shoulders the day he fed his followers. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to change lives by becoming generous caregivers of the resources that you first gave to us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. OFFERTORY *PRESENTATION OF GIFTS UMH 94 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 3

14 Promoting Healthy Multicultural Ministry A complex tapestry of cultures forms the backdrop of how we operate as church in the 21st century. But important questions are often overlooked: What do we really want? What are we trying to achieve? It is important to focus on what is often the implicit goal of ministry in our churches and move onto a set of progressive goals that can help shape or direct us in our ministry and provide the beginning for living out the Gospel, which calls for our oneness in Christ. Here are four goals for promoting healthy multicultural ministry: Reducing conflict ~ Conflict between groups is real and hard to reduce. Sometimes it needs to be addressed immediately with clear measures, especially if the conflict becomes violent, either verbally or physically. But such conflict cannot be treated merely as a problem to be solved. Ultimately relationships have to be formed, and that takes time, patience, and a vision of where we hope to end up. It is more difficult to analyze one s own culture than the culture of someone else. But without understanding one s own culture as one culture among many, one has little chance of interacting successfully with people of other cultures. One needs to feel secure in one s own cultural identity to deal effectively and healthily with other cultures. Recognition of others ~ In most multicultural settings, the first reaction is to try to avoid or ignore differences. It sometimes takes the form of ignoring the presence of another group, thereby rendering them invisible. The other reaction is to cover over differences with such rhetoric as, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. But this rhetoric frequently ignores the realities and the tensions that intellectual interaction often brings. The only way to unity is through acknowledging the church as many tribes and tongues, peoples and nations. This is important because in cultural interaction, despite efforts to ignore cultural differences, we are continually drawn to them. Differences in accents, clothing, social patterns are too salient to be ignored. Sometimes that difference leads to stereotyping and prejudice, sometimes it leads to outright hostility. Respect for cultural differences ~ If recognition of the other is the beginning of the journey toward intercultural relationship, respect for cultural difference is a description of the journey underway. Tolerance may mean quietly putting up with difference, perhaps in the silent hope that it eventually will go away. Respect, however, means reaching the point where difference is valued in its own right, which adds to the richness of our relationships and to the richness of the world. Respect means coming to see the cultural difference of the other as having intrinsic value, not as deviation from some norm or a failure to reach a certain level. ow do we enter into that complex interaction? It begins with recognition of others. 14

15 Healthy interaction between cultures ~ The word healthy is important here, since much of the interaction between cultures is often very unhealthy. Interaction may be marked, on one hand, by stereotyping, prejudice, unwarranted suspicion, racism, and even overt verbal and physical violence. On the other hand, it may be characterized by a stifling romanticism that either glorifies cultural differences as an ideal held by one s own culture or views the other culture as a childlike state that will eventually move up to one s own culture. Healthy interaction is based upon confidence about the value of one s own culture and a sense of security that is not threatened by the encountering of difference. Healthy interaction means that two cultural groups interact so well that they can respectfully point to each other s shortcomings. What is required of us? ~ These four goals represent how intercultural relationships can develop from an initial acknowledgment of other groups, then to beginning a commitment to journey along together, and finally to achieving a sustained healthy interaction. Obstacles to intercultural communication, such as speaking different languages, will be encountered along the way. It may be necessary to provide training in communication and in building relationships. Most importantly, we will need bold biblical vision to challenge us to serve a rich and varied culture. ~ Lewis Center for Church Leadership Nominate individuals for Annual Conference 2019 awards ~ Is anyone (clergy, laity or youth) in your congregation someone who goes above and beyond when it comes to discipleship? The Board of Discipleship each year recognizes one person in each category who displays discipleship in their lives for the Harry Denman Award for Discipleship. Go to: to get an application and send it to Becky Tate, BeckyTate@vaumc.org or mail to the conference office c/o Becky Tate.
