Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. Mark 9.50 Prayer of the Day: O God, your Son has taught us that those who give a cup of water in his name will not lose their reward: open our eyes to see those who are in need, and teach us to set no store by riches and earthly rewards, so that, in surrendering ourselves to serve you in your children, we may labour for the treasure that endures; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 4 Esther 7.1-6, 9-10, So the king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. 2 On the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled. 3 Then Queen Esther answered, If I have won your favour, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me that is my petition and the lives of my people that is my request. 4 For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king. 5 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, Who is he, and where is he, who has presumed to do this? 6 Esther said, A foe and enemy, this wicked Haman! Then Haman was terrified before the king and the queen. 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, Look, the very gallows that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, stands at Haman s house, fifty cubits high. And the king said, Hang him on that. 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the anger of the king abated Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same month, year by year, 22 as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and presents to the poor. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest. 19 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20 you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. 6 Coming Events & Notices (see also back page) Bishop Druitt College 25th Anniversary Service. Today in our 9am service we join with the Principal and other members of the BDC family to celebrate the college s life over a quarter of a century. It was a privilege for this parish and its then rector, Fr Stephen Pullin, to play a decisive role in the school s founding. We continue to support the college and pray for its role in shaping and educating students to be faithful in following the way of Jesus. Operation Christmas Child: Christmas boxes are a great way of showing children around the world that they are precious and loved by God. Filling a box for a child is an act of generosity and brings joy and love to the child. Take a box or two and a pamphlet indicating the type of things to include in the box and also a label for the box to identify whether the box is intended for a boy or a girl. Boxes need to be returned by Sunday October the 14th. Rosters: Sign up sheets are on the notice board for the period 4th November 2018 to 27th January Please TICK your ministry area and list the dates you are not available. St Francis Blessing of the Animals: service on Sunday 7th October at 4pm. Music, Scripture, Gifts and Blessings. Bring your pets or a photo of an animal and tell your friends and family to come also. Bring & Share Luncheon will now be on the 14th October, starting at 12 noon, including a recipe auction to raise funds for drought relief. There is a sheet on the notice board. Please bring some of your favourite recipes to auction! Come along and enjoy the fellowship of each other. 6

7 A Violin for Rose: On Saturday 20th October at 2pm here at St John s there will be a 1 hour concert featuring violinist Rose Light with pianist Mei Wei Lim. Please support Rose, who is a very talented young lady who is working hard to achieve. Tickets $15 available at the door. Equip: On the 20th October there will be a Training Day for all people who want to learn more about Children s Ministry. This will be run in conjunction with Bush Church Aid. See the notice board for more information. The Family Service will not be held tonight (30 September). Please note for the following Sunday, that the family service will be incorporated with the Blessing of the Animals at 4pm on 7th October. The parish will welcome its new locum, the Revd Ron Bundy, and Margaret, next week. Ron will begin with the parish on Friday 5th October, and will be with us each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until the first week in December. From Canon David Cole: It has been a privilege to have served here as locum for the past three months (where did the time go?). Thank you all for welcoming us so warmly with such a generous spirit. I have greatly enjoyed sharing ministry with you all, and especially with the Revds Anne and Carol. This is a great parish with an impressive history. We pray now for an inspiring new Rector to sprint with you into the next exciting phase of the parish s life. Blessings to all. Prayer for a new Rector: Bountiful God, give to the people of St John s a prayerful pastor, who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip and fill your people with enthusiasm for ministry in this place; one who will enable everyone to fulfil their calling. Give to those who will choose wisdom and discernment. May they be guided by your Holy Spirit; and to us all, give warm and generous hearts; for the sake of Jesus Christ and your Glory. Amen. 7
