2 SUNDAY SERVICES As you have all heard our services of worship will take place at 9.30am and am. Usually the earlier service will be held in St Marnock s Church Fowlis and then the later one in Muirhead Church. This will however change when we have Messy Church. Messy Church will be held in Fowlis Village Hall at 9.30am and there will be traditional worship at either Fowlis or Muirhead at 11.15am. The dates for 2017 are: 3 SEPTEMBER 9.30am Messy Church - Fowlis Village Hall 11.15am Traditional Service - Muirhead Church 22 OCTOBER 9.30am Messy Church - Fowlis Village Hall 11.15am Traditional Service - Fowlis Church 3 DECEMBER 9.30am Messy Church - Fowlis Village Hall 11.15am Traditional Service - Muirhead Church On Sunday 16 th July around fifty people attended a service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Lundie Kirk. This was to be the final regular Sunday morning service there for the foreseeable future as we no longer have the people available to conduct worship in three different places on a Sunday morning. It was undoubtedly a sad day as Lundie Church is dear to the hearts of many having been the place where their important life events have been held over the years Baptisms, weddings, funeral and memorial services, as well as worship on a Sunday morning all accompanied by a wonderful feeling of fellowship. Donna conducted worship with The Rev Ian Knox preaching the sermon, Jean Millar reading and Isobel leading the congregation in prayer. Ladies from the congregation provided refreshment at the close of worship. We were all delighted to receive the gift of mugs that had been specially commissioned by Norah and Chick Meikle with a picture of Lundie Church. They will be much treasured.

3 From the Minister Usually the building of a wall is something we would rather avoid certainly when it comes to the wall that surrounds Bethlehem or the wall proposed for the border between Mexico and the US! And the rejoicing that took place when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 lives on in our memories. However, over this summer, we want to build a wall but this will be a Wall of Talents! Every year, the Church of Scotland requires each congregation to take part in the Stewardship Programme. Contrary to popular thinking when the word stewardship is mentioned, it s not all about giving more money to the Kirk! There are three distinct areas when it comes to stewardship, based on the promises we make when joining the church; the giving of our money, our time and our talents to the work of the church. This year we are addressing the giving of our talents. This can be a time of joy as we think about the many gifted people who generously offer to use their talents to help in God s work. There is also great joy in helping people to recognise the talents they have. Perhaps though we have been brought up in a culture that feels you are blowing your own trumpet to admit to being good at anything. Not at all! But isn t it strange how we can look at folk around us and easily identify the things they are good at? We have lots of bricks (cardboard ones!) and you can have as many as you like. We re asking you to recognise the things you re good at it may be practical tasks like baking, DIY, singing, I.T., organising; it could be helping those around you; listening; encouraging; smiling; driving; praying; or are you one of those people who just like helping out with whatever is needing doing? Whatever it is, we want to celebrate it. We want to give thanks for your God-given talent. We re asking if, when you have identified your particular talents, you could contribute by using them to help out at the church. We re not asking that you re around every week maybe if you could take a turn doing the reading during a service, then you d only be involved once every few months. If you re good with computers, could you volunteer your phone number so that if the minister is stuck with an IT problem then she could give you a ring? Could you make the occasional pot of soup for the monthly Soup Lunches? There will be opportunities to fill in a Talent Brick at services, at Holiday Club and at the Garden Fête held at the end of August. Please don t be shy. Remember when the little boy in that crowd of 5000 offered a small token of two loaves and five fish, Jesus accepted it, blessed it, and used them to amazing effect! Grace and peace Donna

Reita THE GUILD RELISH THE MOMENT Yesterday belongs to history, tomorrow belongs to God. Yesterday s a fading sunset, tomorrow s a faint sunrise. Only today is there light enough to love and live. So, gently close the door on yesterday and throw the key away. It isn t the burdens of today that drive men and women mad, But rather the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Anonymous Relish the Moment is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118 verse 24: This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. Contributed by Margaret McVean The Guild has had a successful year. All the meetings were enjoyed by the members and our two fund raising events for the charities of the Guild, the Soup Lunch on the 23rd November and the musical evening on the 9th June presented by The Wighton Singers and Sheena Wellington, were well received. We thank most sincerely everyone who supported these events. SOUP LUNCHES The third Thursday of each month at 12.30pm in the Millennium Hall. 7 T AND ROSES ON THE LAWN T AND ROSES ON THE LAWN but not quite! but not quite! That was the plan but unfortunately the weather had a BIG say and we ended up indoors! But that was the only dampener on the day. However people arrived early with the delicious homebakes and helped to set out the tables in Muirhead Church; We were so grateful to Isobel for running her taxi service! And folks from all the churches and the community turned up all wearing a rose in some form or other, although the prize for the most inventive would surely go to Graeme Tarbet who had a wonderful bunch of Roses Chocolates pinned to his lapel! Everyone Ooh-ed and Aah-ed over the delicious cakes; they laughed, blethered, caught up with old friends and met new ones. This was originally organized to be a social event with no fundraising in mind but with the generosity of those who came and insisted in putting something in the basket will be split between the churches. Thank you to all who came along and all who made it possible.

8 Desert Island Hymns Isobel s Retirement To mark her retirement as our Attached Reader, Isobel is going to take part in Desert Island Hymns on Sunday 20 th August at 6.30pm in Muirhead Church when she will share with us some of her favourite hymns. A light supper will be provided. We do hope that you will come along for this very special evening. If you need transport then please contact Donna or your Elder. WHY DO MODERATORS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY WEAR LACE? The Very Rev Dr Derek Browning explains the fascinating history behind the tradition. The present moderatorial dress, which entails lace cuffs and jabot that doesn t obscure the clerical collar, is a continuation of 18th century court dress. The story goes that the General Assembly ruled that Moderators must wear the attire to counter the risk that the King, in seeing him coming and fearing that the message being brought was not one he wanted to hear, could instruct his servants to turn the Moderator away on the grounds that he was not properly dressed to be admitted to the court. In the past, each Moderator has been presented with a personal set of lace made in Chingleput, India, by mission-taught workers there. The current Moderator, The Very Rev Derek Browning; The Princess Royal; the past Moderator, The Right Rev Russell Barr

9 ACT NOW TO KEEP FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS ON SHELVES We have been noticing recently that it is seems to be increasingly difficult locally to source Fairtrade tea and coffee products to use within the church. As a Fairtrade Church we are of course committed to doing this. And so it was of great interest to read the following article published by the Church of Scotland who are concerned by the recent move by some supermarkets to replace certified Fairtrade products with products from their own certified brands. The Church of Scotland strongly supports the Fairtrade movement, and encourages its congregations and members to use and buy Fairtrade wherever possible. Last month, the General Assembly agreed a plan which had a vision for Scotland to continue to be a Fairtrade nation. We are concerned at reports that some Supermarkets are seeking to replace Fairtrade products with their own in-house accreditation. This is bad for consumers, as they won t know what any new brand means in terms of help for farmers. It will be bad for producers, who support the Fairtrade system and have voiced concern over the loss of the Fairtrade Premium which allows for locally led decision making over how this is used in community development. And it will be bad for all those who want to see a marketplace where prices paid are fair and which seeks to eliminate exploitation, as different labelling schemes will mean confusion and competition, leading to a race to the bottom in terms of cost-cutting and harming labour and social standards. We urge everyone who supports Fairtrade to: Continue to look for the Fairtrade logo and buy Fairtrade wherever possible. Find out the range of products which now have Fairtrade certification. Write to their Supermarket or Grocer to urge them to continue to stock Fairtradeaccredited products. Write to their MP and MSPs to raise the matter at Westminster and Holyrood and ask them to continue to offer political support for the Fairtrade movement. PERTHSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS Fiona Russell will be returning to the Session House in September as part of the Perthshire Open Studios event. Fiona will bring her silver, silver plate and beaded jewellery with sea glass and other media to the venue, with new ideas developed over the past year. She would be happy to see you in the Session House of St Marnock s Church Fowlis from the 2 nd to the 10 th September The exhibition will be open from 10am 5pm with the exception of the two Sundays, 3 rd and 10 th when she will be there from 11am - 5pm. The exhibition will be part of the lime trail of the Perthshire Open Studios event and booklets can be obtained from Fiona.
