LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: January 6 Epiphany of Our Lord The Heavenly Father welcomed outsiders into His household at Christmas (Matthew 2:1, 11). He even escorted them toward His nativity and incarnation by an extraordinary gesture. His loving grace held the magi as precious as His own Son, regardless of their origin and location. God s favor shines the same way upon unborn ones, even in their sometimes unfavorable circumstances. And His forgiveness embraces all sinners even those with histories checkered by violence against life. 4
5 MID-WEEK STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT New Every Morning It s a new year. Not only do we turn over a page on the calendar, we begin a whole new calendar. For many, a new year brings promise of a new start, but many don t have such an optimistic view. The bills from over-spending at Christmas are starting to come in, and there s no more money now than there was a month ago. Then there s the problem of the extra ten pounds you put on due to all the goodies you consumed. None of this is new. The calendar may say a new year, but only the date is new. Instead of looking around us at our circumstances or inside ourselves where there is no hope or inspiration, let us look at God s unfailing compassion and His blessings which He pours out on us daily (Lamentations 3:21-23). Let us spend our prayer time in thanks for all He has done for us and provided for us, rather than in lamenting our sorry state. Let us look to His wisdom to manage His gifts to us in a wiser manner so that we might please Him and be of service in His Kingdom. Especially let us thank Him for the gift of forgiveness and the new start He gives us minute by minute. Luke 2:21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. There it is: the shortest Gospel lesson of the whole Church Year. It is for the festival of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus. What more do you need to know than the Name of Jesus? The Lord saves. That s who Jesus is: the Lord who saves us sinners. That simple Gospel message is the foundation of our faith and the strength to live out our faith in action. Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank You for this new year that You have given to us. We know our time is a gift from You and in Your hands. Help us to use the time You ve given us in ways that give You honor and glory. We pray this in Your precious name. Amen. Blessings on your stewardship journey! +LIFE TOGETHER+ January 6 January 13, 2019 Sunday 9:15 Worship Service 10:30 Sunday School 10:45 Adult Sunday School 2:30 Taylorville Care Center 3:00 De-Decorating Church 3:15 Taylorville Estates Monday 8:45 4 Yr. Pastor Douglas Evenson FROM CONCORDIA PUBLISHING HOUSE (cph.org or ) See My Savior's Hands by William Weedon Have you ever considered Jesus hands? The Bible reveals His story by telling us how He used His hands! Imagine Jesus as a boy, His hands holding the scrolls of Scripture in the temple. As a teacher, His hands blessing the loaves and fish that would feed thousands. As our Lord, His hands touching the leper to heal him. As our Savior, His hands nailed to the cross. See Jesus hands in these traditional illustrations and simple, eloquent words that tell the story of His life, His death, His resurrection, and His love for us. 7
