1 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 1 09 p;[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ddd KNIGHTLY NOTES Y2K PLUS XVII EDITION, ISSUE I JANUARY 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas, filled with the joy of being with family and friends. My wife and I were very fortunate to celebrate this special holiday with our two daughters and their families from Chicago, my brother from San Diego, my sister-in-law from Washington State. Our seven-month old grandson, Will kept us all busy and entertained. It was indeed a season of love. With the New Year upon us, January will be an active and productive month. At the business meeting on January 5th, we will be voting on the procedures and rules governing our scholarship program. A sign-up sheet will also be passed around for those interested in volunteering for our UNLV concession program. With a dozen new volunteers ready to take the concession training and alcohol awareness classes, we can be considered for concession assignments at future events. Then, following all masses on the weekend of the 14th and 15th, our members will be selling the raffle tickets to support seminarians. Our planning meeting will be on the 26th, and the pancake breakfast will take place on Sunday, the 29th. Finally, on the last weekend of the month, we will begin selling tickets to our Mardi Gras dinner dance. So, Brothers, mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11th for our first dinner/dance in this fraternal year. Let s all work to make this a success. God Bless, Bill Koss Grand Knight Council wpkoss@gmail.com ST JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO WEST SAHARA AVENUE LAS VEGAS, NV **************************************************************************************************************************************

9 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 9 LTC Is an Important Piece of the Puzzle There are many financial consultants and retirement authorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today. 11 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 11 BEYOND THE CATHOLIC VOTE by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Beyond the election season, our Catholic faith should be a source of unity, reconciliation and renewal IT HAS BEEN one of the most surprising election seasons any of us can remember. Among the many surprises was the disclosure by WikiLeaks of s from within a presidential campaign organization that caused great concern about the disparaging language used to describe Catholics. The disclosure prompted the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, to issue an unprecedented public statement about what he described as an attempt to interfere in the internal life of the Church for short-term political gain. He urged public officials to respect the rights of people to live their faith without interference from the state. The question that we should ask ourselves is: Will Catholics in America be a source of unity and reconciliation or a cause of further division? The answer to that question will depend largely on what we think it means today to be a Catholic in America. In other words, what is fundamental to our identity as Catholics? As Knights of Columbus, we must strive to be a source of unity in our Church and society, and we must do this in a way consistent with our commitment to charity, fraternity and patriotism. Many Americans, including many Catholics, are disheartened and frustrated by the recent political season. But this is precisely the time when Catholics need to step up and more fully exercise their responsibilities as citizens for the common good. It is time for more not less Catholic involvement in the life of our nation. How are Catholics to do this? Pope Francis has already given the answer: by living more fully by the criteria that the Lord commands rather than by the criteria of the world. In other words, we need to continue the renewal of our own faith community as Catholics if we hope to more effectively influence our national life as Americans. Specifically, we might focus on six areas: The renewal of parishes as true eucharistic communities, with a fuller appreciation of how the the source and summit of the Christian life is also the source and summit of our unity and charity as Catholics. The evangelization of the Catholic family as a domestic church, called to reach out in solidarity to other families as a source of unity, charity, mercy and reconciliation. A renewed devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary not only as the perfect model of the Christian life, but also as an unsurpassed model for understanding our responsibilities as citizens for the common good. A deeper understanding of those moral principles and issues that have absolute value (as Pope Francis has said the Fifth Commandment does) for us as a faith community and that are the basis for a fuller engagement with the social doctrine of our Church. A heightened commitment to Catholic education that is not merely abstract, but that seeks to form the entire person. A greater appreciation of the office of bishop as the source of unity for the local church a unity that promotes a deeper communion among bishops, priests, religious and laity. if we begin thinking in this way, then a greater unity among Catholics may provide a road map for greater unity for our entire country. And that would be a Catholic vote which would endure far beyond any election. Vivat Jesus! Kofc.org

12 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 12 New Year's Resolutions: The Pope Francis List This post on Rappler by Paterno Esmaquel II is an amazing overview of Pope Francis' primary concerns. He preaches against gossip, reminds us to finish our meals, and even tells us not to fear marriage. What lessons from him can we bring into 2017? Rappler compiles 10 of the Pope's most memorable quotes in the form of New Year's resolutions. This is the Pope Francis list. 1. Don't gossip. It's one of our hobbies. For Francis, it's also one of the most evil activities. He says when we gossip, we are doing what Judas did, and begin to tear the other person to pieces. Every time we judge our brother in our hearts or worse when we speak badly of them with others, we are murdering Christians, Francis says. There is no such thing as innocent slander. 2. Finish your meals. No leftovers, please. Named after a 12th-century saint who lived in poverty, Francis slams a culture of waste that neglects the plight of the hungry. The Pope says: We should all remember... that throwing food away is like stealing from the tables of the poor, the hungry. 3. Make time for others. Tending to 1.2 billion members, Francis seems too busy for anything else. That is, until he calls up strangers. Or entertains a random biker. Or sends a handwritten letter to a Jesuit he has never met. The Jesuit who got the letter, Fr James Martin, says If the Pope can find time to be kind to others, if he can pause to say thank you, if he can take a moment make someone feel appreciated, then so can I. So can we. 4. Choose the 'more humble' purchase. The Pope preaches against materialism. Certainly, possessions, money, and power can give a momentary thrill, the illusion of being happy, but they end up possessing us and making us always want to have more, never satisfied. Put on Christ in your life, place your trust in him, and you will never be disappointed! 5. Meet the poor 'in the flesh.' It is not enough to mediate this commitment through institutions, which obviously help because they have a multiplying effect, but that is not enough. They do not excuse us from reestablishing personal contact with the needy. The sick must be cared for, even when we find them repulsive and repugnant. Those in prison must be visited. Charity that does not change the situation of the poor isn't enough. 6. Stop judging others. In the same way he denounces gossip, Francis condemns prejudice. He reminds intolerant Catholics, for one, to respect atheists. If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. 7. Befriend those who disagree. When leaders in various fields ask me for advice, my response is always the same: dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. It is the only way for individuals, families, and societies to grow, the only way for the life of peoples to progress, along with the culture of encounter, a culture in which all have something good to give and all can receive something good in return. 8. Make commitments, such as marriage. The Pope says: Today, there are those who say that marriage is out of fashion; in a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, many preach the importance of enjoying the moment. I ask you, instead, to be revolutionaries, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes that you are incapable of responsibility, that you are incapable of true love. I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage to swim against the tide. Have the courage to be happy. 9. Make it a habit to 'ask the Lord. Ask the Lord, and he will show you the way.the young Samuel kept hearing the voice of the Lord who was calling him, but he did not understand or know what to say, yet with the help of the priest Eli, in the end he answered: 'Speak, Lord, for I am listening' (cf. 1 Sam 3:1-10). You too can ask the Lord: What do you want me to do? What path am I to follow? 10. Be happy. The true Christian, says the Pope, exudes great joy. He says keeping this joy to ourselves will make us sick in the end. Sometimes these melancholy Christians' faces have more in common with pickled peppers than the joy of having a beautiful life. Francis says, The Christian sings with joy, and walks, and carries this joy." This joy, he reminds us, should translate to love of neighbor.
