1 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 1 ddd KNIGHTLY NOTES Y2K PLUS XV EDITION, ISSUE XII DECEMBER 2015 NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In less than a month we lost three of our beloved brothers, Fred Sullivan on October 13, SK JJ Quinn on October 26 and SK Bob Pinzl on November 9. It seems in my experience, that as we close in on Thanksgiving and the Christmas holiday time I seem to lose friends and relatives. We also have to be very objective in our thinking as to our lost love ones. They are at peace and in very good hands with our Lord. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for everything we have in our life and that includes the memories of the ones we love, alive and departed. Christmas is the time we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the time of good will, a time for peace. It is also a time to think about friends or relatives we haven t spoken to in some time. It is very easy to pick up the phone and call to let them know you are thinking about them. Sometimes a little thing like a phone call will bring great joy to someone s life. With all my heart I wish all of you and your immediate and extended families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. Mike LaRiccia Grand Knight Council Fs10442@gmail.com ST JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO WEST SAHARA AVENUE LAS VEGAS, NV 89117

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. 4 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 4 Council News from the Financial Secretary ******DUES************ ***** DUES****** DUES ********* DUES ********* It will soon be that time of year again when I will be sending out the billing for the yearly membership dues. Last year it cost the council in excess of $ to get all of the dues collected, as procedure was not followed in a timely manner. Below I will outline the proper procedure that Supreme has set forth for proper billing. Supremes Billing Cycle: 1st Billing Notice sent to each member on December 15th Payment to be made before January 1st 2nd Billing Notice sent to each member on january 15th If I have to send out a second notice there is a cost of 55cents for each notice sent when you consider postage etc., not including my time. KNIGHT ALERT LETTER sent on February 15th Dues are considered delinquent and past due as of February 1st. In addition to having another council expense to send out this 3rd reminder, the retention committee has the duty to call each of these late individuals and remind them of their promise to keep their dues current. NOTICE OF INTENT TO RETAIN sent on March 1st This is another cost to the council if it is necessary. Form 100 filed with Supreme for suspension May 1st We hope it never comes to that. As you can see this is a schedule we must follow. I ask each and every member to pay their dues upon receipt of the billing and before January 15th. That will save the council the extra expense and labor if it is necessary to follow up with the additional three steps. If any of you have a real financial problem with paying your dues please let either me or Grand Knight Michael LaRiccia know and we will privately assist you with your dues payment. It is not just about commemorating the historical event, which occurred some 2,000 years ago in a little village of Judea. Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an advent, a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, one day will come to judge the living and the dead, we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life. Therefore, Advent is, so to speak, an intense training that directs us decisively toward him who already came, who will come, and who comes continuously."

11 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 11 REFLECTIONS for ADVENT From Pope Francis 2013 Papal Address: Dear brothers and sisters, hello! Today, the first Sunday of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year, that is, a new journey of the People of God with Jesus, our Shepherd, who guides us through history toward the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Thus, this day has a special appeal. Through it we experience a profound sense of the meaning of history. We rediscover the beauty of all being on a journey: the Church, with her vocation and mission, and the whole of humanity, nations, civilizations, cultures, all on a journey along the paths of time. But where is this journey headed? Is there a common goal? And what is this goal? The Lord answers us through the prophet Isaiah and says: At the end of days the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it; many peoples shall come and say: Come, let us climb the Lord s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths (Isaiah 2:2-3). This is what Isaiah says about where we are going. It is a universal pilgrimage toward a common goal, which in the Old Testament is Jerusalem, where the Lord s temple stands, because from there, from Jerusalem, comes the revelation of the face of God and his law. Revelation found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, and he himself is the Lord s temple, the Word made flesh: he is both the leader and the goal of our pilgrimage, of the pilgrimage of the whole People of God; and in its light other peoples too can journey toward the Kingdom of justice, toward the Kingdom of peace. The prophet says further: They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again (2:4). Let me repeat what the prophet says. Listen well: They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. But when will this happen? What a beautiful day it will be when weapons are destroyed to be transformed into tools for work! What a beautiful day that will be! And this is possible! Let us bet on hope, on the hope of peace, and it will be possible! Prayer for Advent: Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever Faithful to your promises and ever close to your church: the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior's coming and looks forward with longing to his return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which His presence will bestow, for he is Lord for ever and ever. -Roman Rite Some Memorable Christmas Quotes: The TV News keeps saying that this will be the best Christmas we ever had. I don't know - I kind of think the first one was. --Milton Berle I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar every month. Harland Miller He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree. ~Roy L. Smith

12 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 12 CONNECTIONS, ADVENT REFLECTIONS CONTINUED Life Is an Advent Season "Life is a constant Advent season: we are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfillment are all part of our Advent experience. "The world is not as just, not as loving, not as whole as we know it can and should be. But the coming of Christ and his presence among us as one of us give us reason to live in hope: that light will shatter the darkness, that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices, that we are never alone or abandoned. "May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of our lives." An Advent Examination Edward Hays, A Pilgrim s Almanac, p. 196 "Advent is the perfect time to clear and prepare the Way. Advent is a winter training camp for those who desire peace. By reflection and prayer, by reading and meditation, we can make our hearts a place where a blessing of peace would desire to abide and where the birth of the Prince of Peace might take place. "Daily we can make an Advent examination. Are there any feelings of discrimination toward race, sex, or religion? Is there a lingering resentment, an unforgiven injury living in our hearts? Do we look down upon others of lesser social standing or educational achievement? Are we generous with the gifts that have been given to us, seeing ourselves as their stewards and not their owners? Are we reverent of others, their ideas and needs, and of creation? These and other questions become Advent lights by which we may search the deep, dark corners of our hearts. ************************************************************************************************************** Wreaths across America Project Wreaths across America is a national movement to honor deceased Veterans. 13 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 13 In founding the Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney sought to respond to the crisis in family life affecting Catholics in 19th century America. As a young man he witnessed firsthand the challenges his widowed mother faced with seven children at home. Later, as a priest he confronted on a daily basis the problems affecting the families of his parish community due to poverty, violence, alcoholism, immigration, anti- Catholic prejudice and discrimination. Father McGivney s vision for family life was not simply that each family might find financial and material aid. He understood that holiness is the calling of all baptized Christians. And, seeing as his two brothers followed him into the priesthood, we can understand how truly important the "sanctuary of the home" was to the McGivney family. His family was a living example of what the Second Vatican Council later taught, that each man, woman and child is called to holiness through proclaiming the Gospel and communicating the divine gift of love through the activities of their daily lives. When Christian families respond in this way to the design of the Creator, they become a "domestic Church" that, as Pope Paul VI explained, mirrors "the various aspects of the entire Church." (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 71) Since the Second Vatican Council, and especially during the pontificate of St. John Paul II, it has become clear that the family is "the way of the Church." (Instrumentum Laboris, 49) In one sense this obviously means that the family is the object of the Church s evangelization efforts. But the Christian family too has its own indispensible mission. As St. John Paul II wrote in Familiaris Consortio, "The family has the mission to guard, reveal and communicate love." (Familiaris Consortio, 17) This mission is at the heart of the "community of life and love" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1603) that begins with the married couple in the sacrament of matrimony. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, "Conjugal love involves a totality, in which all the elements of the person enter It aims at a deeply personal unity, a unity that, beyond union in one flesh leads to forming one heart and soul." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1643) In other words, sacramental marriage involves not just an agreement between the spouses but a radical transformation of the spouses. As Pope Benedict XVI wrote in Deus Caritas Est, "marriage based on an exclusive and definitive love becomes the icon of the relationship between God and his people and vice versa. God s way of loving becomes the measure of human love." (Deus Caritas Est, 11) In this way the witness of husband and wife within the daily life of the family can guard, reveal and communicate love as they make their own the gifts of marriage unity, indissolubility, faithfulness and openness to new life. A recent Vatican document on the role and mission of the family has stated, "the family needs to be re-discovered as the essential agent in the work of evangelization." (Instrumentum Laboris, 103) It also pointed to the necessity to better understand the "missionary dimension of the family as a domestic church." (Instrumentum Laboris, 48) These observations echo those of St. John Paul II who said in 1979 during his meeting with the Latin American bishops that "in the future, evangelization will depend largely on the domestic church." (Pope John Paul II, Address to the Third General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate) Clearly, the role of the family in the work of evangelization is not primarily a matter of programs, projects or strategies. These all have their place, but they are secondary. Their place is to be at the service of what is essential the love between a husband and wife which, sanctified through the love of Christ, radiates to each member of their family. The family as "domestic church" as a place of encounter with Christ within the community of a particular Christian family a place where each member of the family has an important role. In other words, the "mission" of the family in the task of evangelization is to be what it is called to be - that is, to live its daily life as a Christian family or as St. John Paul II said so often, "Families become what you are!" (Familiaris Consortio, 17) The family s mission to "guard, reveal and communicate love" - like the parish community - does not exist in an ideal place. The truth and beauty of the family remains to be communicated to every Christian family, even those that are fragile, wounded or broken. These families too may read the words of St. Paul with confidence: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" (Rom 8:35) And they may find in that confidence a path of hope and healing. During his visit to the Philippines, Pope Francis cited the need for "holy and loving families to protect the beauty and truth of the family in God s plan and to be an example for other families." (Pope Francis, Address to Families at the Mall of Asia Arena) Building the Domestic Church is one concrete way that the Knights of Columbus, in solidarity with Pope Francis, can offer "holy and loving families" for the Church s mission of evangelization in our time. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson
