1 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 1 ddd K NIGHTLY NOTES Brother Knights and Ladies in Christ NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGH T S T J OSEPH, H USBAND OF M ARY C ATHOLIC C HURCH K NIGHTS OF C OLUMBUS C OUNCIL N O W EST S AHARA A VENUE L AS EGAS, NV Y2K PLUS XVI E DITION, I SSUE V May 2016 As you all know the Nevada State Convention was held at Lake Tahoe on the 15th, 16th and 17th of April at the Harvey Hotel. I attended the convention as a delegate, PGK & FN Ken Sawyer as the second delegate along with alternates PGK Chuck McCloskey and DGK Bill Koss. We also had ladies from the auxiliary who attended - Jolyn Pinzl, Vilma Koss, Lynne Niebauer and my wife, Patricia. Except for the business part of the conventions, the ladies attended the luncheon and dinner and the award ceremonies. Our WSD Greg Sprigg and his staff of officers did a remarkable job planning and executing the convention. There were some improvements from previous conventions to streamline the execution of the schedule. The scheduled speakers, Michael Whitcraft and Supreme Director, Javier Martinez, gave great motivational speeches. The election of officers for the 2016/2017 Columbian Year went very smoothly. All present officers reran for election and all won by acclimation. WSD Greg Sprigg awarded all his directors and chairman certificates of appreciation for their help this Columbian Year. From our Council the recipients of the awards went to, Family Director, Tony Donofrio, Shining Armor Award Chairman, Dennis Murtaugh and yours truly, Round Table Chairman. Our Council also received the Family Service Award plaque, which I will display at our next business meeting. Our DD Ray Troik won District Deputy of the Year. This is a well-deserved honor for a job well done. The delegates passed all the resolutions that I brought up at our last business meeting. Resolution #6, the controversial one that we discussed and all members at the meeting voted to not accept was passed with one amendment, to change the date from January 1 to June 30 to March 1 to August 31. The next Nevada State Convention will be held in Mesquite from April 28th thru the 30th It will be held at the Rising Sports Ranch as the host hotel. We need lots of help from members to make this a success. The Assembly has accumulated over 200 flags from our parishioners and they want to extend an invitation to everyone in the parish to attend this Flag Retirement Ceremony. The plan is to tie this event to a Knights recruitment drive, and at the conclusion of the Flag Retirement Ceremony, the Assembly will host a FREE Pasta dinner in the hall for all those who attend the Ceremony. Fr Marc will be speaking about the benefits of Knights at this Mass and will come out after to do the blessing; the Council will be manning a recruitment table during the retirement and dinner. We need our members to show up in Knights shirts and help with the flag burning. We will have 4 fire drums going and we are asking that members bring up a flag with a member of the Color Corps, open it and drop it into the fire, step back and do a quick had salute and return to the line to pick up another flag. The Assembly did a joint retirement with the Council at CTK and it went very well, but realize the key is a good turnout of Council members. With Memorial Day just weeks away this is a good opportunity to recognize those brave Men and Woman that served our country and protected our rights to fly our Flags. Please plan on joining us for this Ceremony. GK Mike LaRiccia & FN Ken Sawyer ***********************************************************************************************************

7 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 7 Attention: Council has a new field agent. Stephen Melancon. Our previous field agent, Neil Peters, will now be handling St Francis of Assisi. Neil will remain a member of our Council. If you need to reach Brother Stephen, call or him at Stephen.melancon@kofc.org Different life stages, changing needs You may have a long-range expense for which you are saving, such as college for your children. You may be concerned about a comfortable, worry-free retirement. You may want to protect your ability to earn a living. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife, children or grandchildren. At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind. Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20, may not be at 30, or 45, or 65. What is the best way to be prepared for these changes before they happen? One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come with different life stages is to meet annually with your professional Knights of Columbus agent, and address the needs that his analysis uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and issues on the road ahead. During that annual visit, I ll take the time to review your needs, goals and budget. I ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure your coverage meets your needs. I ll recommend a program of life insurance, long-term care, disability income insurance and guaranteed retirement products that will help you rest easy at night. Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns, whatever your stage in life, I can help. Contact me today to learn more. Stephen Malancon (field agent) Stephen.melancon@kofc.org NOTE: All members are encouraged to look into the annuity and insurance programs offered by the Knights. The annuities start at 100 and are a great long term investment. Go to the Supreme Council s website or Contact field agent Stephen Melancon above for more info or to sign up. With over $92 million in insurance and Annuities in force and 1400 service agents, the Knights are proudly fulfilling Father McGivney s vision of protecting the widows and orphans of deceased Knights. You can also plan and save for your financial security and future retirement. Please take advantage of this special fraternal service. As a Knights of Columbus member, this is a free insurance, annuity and estate planning service for you and your family. ******************************************************************************************************************* PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and the lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen Please report all favors received to: The Fr McGivney Guild 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven CT *******************************************************************************************

Mary Ann reported that we are at about 250 tickets sold and that we have a table in the church Narthex the weekend of May to make some more sales. The drawing will be the night of our Spring Silent auction event, May 19 th. Speaking of the Silent Auction, the committee has been working hard on that as well. We have the Hall from 1100 on May 19 and will be arriving early to get setup. There was a signup sheet passed around at the meeting. We need all to help the members at large that are helping will arrive about 3pm and help finish setting up. Chuck is doing the food for us and the Knights (Ken) is manning the bar and donating the liquor. The event will run from 630 to 830 pm. I have a credit card app on my phone that we may use for credit sales of some of the larger items. Our beloved Tony Ruivivar will be our Emcee. We will all be needed to serve, manage tables, close tables, check people in. So please come help if you can, even if you were not on the original committee that has been meeting! The other huge item of note is that it has been announced that the Hall and classrooms will be unavailable from June 6 to September 30. 11 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 11 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE JUBILEE OF MERCY What is a jubilee year? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition and evidence for it can be found in the Old Testament (for example, see Leviticus 25). The jubilee year was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God's providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued. How is this Jubilee different from other Jubilee years? The Jubilee of Mercy that Pope Francis has called, from December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016, is an Extraordinary Jubilee. This designation as an "Extraordinary Jubilee" sets it apart from the ordinary cycle of jubilees, or holy years, which are called every 25 years in the Catholic Church. By calling for a holy year outside of the normal cycle, a particular event or theme is emphasized. For example, Pope Francis called this particular Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to direct our attention and actions "on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's actions in our lives... a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective" Why a Jubilee of Mercy now? Pope Francis himself addressed this question in his homily... for First Vespers for Divine Mercy Sunday. "Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favourable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we may comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ." What is the Jubilee of Mercy? in the Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae vultus... Pope Francis declared that the Jubilee of Mercy will begin on December 8, 2015 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and conclude on November 20, 2016 (the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). December 8, 2015 also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council, a Council that sought to bring the love of God to the modern world. Similarly, the Holy Father strongly desires this Jubilee celebration of mercy to be lived out in the daily lives of the faithful, and all who turn to God for compassionate love and mercy. How do we live out the Jubilee of Mercy in our daily lives? In Misericordiae vultus, Pope Francis emphasizes the need for the Church and all her members to live out the loving mercy that God has for us. Our response to God's loving mercy towards us is to act in that same way to all those we meet. The Holy Father reminds us that "Mercy is the very foundation of the Church's life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church's very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love" As members of the Body and Christ, our lives should reflect this witness of mercy to those we meet on a daily basis.

12 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 12 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE JUBILEE OF MERCY There are many resources available on the USCCB's website for the Jubilee of Mercy, as well as the Vatican's website..., and diocesan websites. The USCCB has monthly reflections available to nourish our spiritual life and suggestions for how we can put mercy in motion in our own lives. We are called to be "merciful like the Father" and reflect God's superabundant mercy in our daily actions towards one another. What are the major planned events of the Jubilee year? There are many events planned throughout the Jubilee of Mercy. The calendar of events... organized by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization lists the scheduled events that will take place at the Vatican. The Jubilee year beings with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, with the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. John Lateran opening the following Sunday. On this day, the Doors of Mercy will also be opened around the world at local cathedrals and significant shrines. Throughout the year, there will also be Jubilee celebrations for various groups who engage in the work of mercy and who have been shown God's mercy. Additionally, Pope Francis will participate in particular "Jubilee" signs, which witness to the works of mercy. Although there are many events planned for official celebrations at the Vatican, the Holy Father encourages dioceses throughout the world to participate in these celebrations recognizing God's mercy in their own local communities. What are the Holy Doors? One of the central components of the Jubilee of Mercy is that the Holy Doors throughout the world will be opened during this Jubilee year. When they are opened at the beginning of the year, "the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope" (MV, 3... ). Since each diocese will have the opportunity to open a Door of Mercy in their diocese, all members of the faithful will have opportunity to make a pilgrimage to their local Holy Door during the Jubilee. This pilgrimage is to be a journey of walking closer with God and discovering "moment[s] of grace and spiritual renewal" (MV, 3... ). These doors are symbols of God's mercy, open to welcome everyone into the compassion of God's love that Christ proclaimed. What are some key resources for the Jubilee of Mercy? Those wishing to take up Pope Francis' call to mercy throughout this Jubilee of Mercy are encouraged to explore the resources not only on the official Vatican website... and the USCCB's website, but also their local diocesan website. Numerous catechetical resources, events, and other activities have been prepared for the Jubilee of Mercy. Since the Holy Father would like this Jubilee of Mercy to be celebrated throughout the whole world at the local and universal levels, dioceses and parishes are encouraged to offer a variety of resources for their local parishioners in addition to the events and resources that have been prepared by the Vatican. Many of these resources can be viewed and downloaded for free and are ideal for use in small faith sharing groups or for individual reflection.

13 KNIGHTLY NOTES PAGE 13 Building the Domestic Church Today, the Knights of Columbus is providentially positioned to play a key role in the new alliance between the Church and the family called for by Pope Francis What is necessary now is our greater involvement in the renewal of parish and family life. -Supreme Knight Carl Anderson It is in the parish that one becomes engaged with the Church community, learns how to become a disciple of Christ, is nurtured by Scripture, is nourished by the sacraments, and ultimately becomes an evangelizer. Successful evangelization and catechetical initiatives must be focused on the parish. - USCCB On November 20th, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson announced that, through the Order s wide-reaching new Domestic Church initiative, Knights and their families will have greater opportunities to participate in a variety of activities that promote the New Evangelization, strengthen our parishes and grow the Order. Building the Domestic Church Knights of Columbus has always been an organization dedicated to the well-being and support of Catholic family life. The family is the first and primary place where we experience and are formed in our Catholic faith. By building upon our current programs and activities, the Knights of Columbus continues to promote the family as a domestic church where husbands and wives, parent and children, grow in their knowledge and practice of the Catholic Faith. In order to perform its important mission of evangelization, each family needs to find support in the sacramental life of the parish. Strengthening our Parishes Knights of Columbus councils have always responded to the most urgent needs of the Church, particularly through charitable and social outreach. In order to support the evangelization of family life today, our councils must be even more fully integrated into our parishes. As the world s largest Catholic fraternal and family organization, we have a responsibility to dedicate our time, talent and resources to ensuring that our parishes our beacons of the new evangelization. --- Kofc.org
