1 First United Methodist Church of Wabash, Indiana TO KNOW CHRIST AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN F I R S T E D I T I O N Mission Statement...To provide a loving fellowship that brings about spiritual transformation through worship, prayer, study and action in order to know Christ and to make Him known. Vision Statement...Our passion for God and for people means we will be a church which offers Christ to all and is open to God s leading. OCTOBER 2010 THE PASTORS PAGE BASICS It was he who gave gifts to mankind ; he appointed some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, others to be pastors and teachers, He did this to prepare all God s people for the work of Christian service in order to build up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-12 Some of us have entered into that time of year which is the best time of the year. What is that time? FOOTBALL SEASON! Whether it is college or professional football many persons plan their schedules on Saturday or Sunday around football. Thirty years ago, before their fans were known as cheese heads, the Green Bay Packers were a very good football team. Their collective salary was almost less than some of today s stars are willing to play for individually. The coach, as many of you know, was Vince Lombardi. He was intense when it came to his team being fundamentally sound. On one occasion the Packers lost to a team which was at that time an inferior squad. It was an ugly loss. A practice was called for the next morning. The players expected the most grueling practice of their life. Gritting his teeth and staring holes through each player Lombardi began. O.K. we go back to basics this morning. Holding a football high enough for all to see, he continued to yell, Gentlemen, this is a football! The coaching philosophy of Vince Lombardi and Paul s counsel to us from Ephesians have this common theme: excellence can be best achieved by perfecting the basics. What does this mean for you and I in our journey with God? It means our focus as individuals and as a congregation must remain on the basics. Basics such as prayer, the study of and application of scriptures, worship, discipleship and evangelism. Our relationship with God is best served when we focus on mastering the basics of our faith. Our journey with God is not a sport but it does require endurance and the persistence to perfect the basics of our faith. 2 PASTOR HEATHER HAPPENINGS Children s Sabbath, October 24 Each year we open our eyes to the crises endured by too many children every day in America crises resulting in heartbreak and lost potential in their lives and realize we don t have a minute to wait or a child to waste before we resolve to do a new thing to bring help and hope to our nation s children, including those in Wabash County. Children model the behavior of the generation ahead of them. If our actions towards children do not reflect Jesus commandment to love God and love neighbors as we love ourselves, how can we expect our children to behave differently? On October 24, the date we celebrate the Children s Sabbath this year, we will celebrate children as sacred gifts, give Bibles to our Third Graders, honor Kids First caregivers and collect NEW hats, mitts, gloves, scarves and socks for children. They will be given to the Light House Mission for families that receive Thanksgiving/Christmas baskets this year. Club 45 will be coordinating this mission project. Wouldn t it be wonderful if every child received a new item along with the food basket this year? We want to partner with Lighthouse Mission as they improve the lives of children in this community. Contact Pastor Heather for more information. Club 45 We will meet Sunday, October 10 from 11am to 1pm. Each youth is asked to bring 12 servings of orange or dark brown/ black foods for our lunch together. Joe Halderman, John Schuler and Kory Fuller will be coordinating the design for our Trunk or Treat vehicle so if you have ideas, contact them! Our mission project this month is new hats, gloves, scarves, socks or mitts for kids. Save part of your allowance or look for ways to earn money for your purchase and we ll talk about how you will buy your item at this meeting. Friends in the 4th or 5th grade are always welcome. Pastor Heather THANK YOU Thank you for the card and cake to help me celebrate my birthday. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated. Thank you, Martha Purdy

4 Parish Nurse s Notes CHILDREN S HEALTH DAY is annually observed in the United States on the first Monday of October. With school back in session, it is often difficult for children and their families to stay on a healthy schedule. Adults and children need the same types of nutrients -- such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. But the amounts vary according to age group. Reliable resources that are available to guide your family on nutrition include: These websites have a variety of information related to the health of children and teens: Remember to tell the children in your life that you love them and that Jesus loves them. Also, incorporate prayer into the day. Blessings, Linda Gardner, Parish Nurse BOOK remarks The Christian Book Club will meet on Oct. 19 at 12:30 P.M. at the Great Wall Restaurant. We will be discussing Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. This book which was first published in 1818 is nothing like the movies. Our last book of 2010 is The Man Who Invented Christmas by Les Standiford which we will discuss in November. In case you are wondering who the man is, it is none other than Charles Dickens. Fall into reading with us and then join us for great food and great conversation. If you have any questions you may call me at Sondra Harrell MONDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY 10:30 A.M. We have several Bible study groups meeting along with other groups supported in some way by our congregation. So let me offer Sunday, October 14, I will put that on my schedule, and assuming I am assigned to serve in Indiana for another quadrennium I will plan to be with you at Wabash First on that date.
