1 December 2013 Vol. 13, Issue 12 The Parish Life of Our Lord s Lutheran Church Christmas Buffet December 8, :30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. The Christmas Buffet will be held Sunday, December 8, beginning with punch and fellowship at 5:30 p.m. and followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Sign up at the Information Counter to bring a dish to share or give a donation to cover the cost of ham and turkey; donations may be given to Karlene Grosz or Jenny My- Order your Poinsettias to beautify the sanctuary for Christmas by signing up at the information counter in the narthex. To: Free concerts featuring Oklahoma City area musicians held at noon on the First Tuesdays of the month. December 3rd features St. Paul s Lutheran Canticle Ringers. They will present familiar secular and sacred music for the season. 2

4 REACHING OUR CITY Christmas gifts for the elderly It s that time of year again time to remember our needy, elderly friends at R.O.C. It is a fact that everyone wants to give gifts for children this time of year, but our elderly are often neglected. You have done a great job in the past, so let s do even better this year! Please place your items in the box provided by the Christmas tree in the Narthex. (If you prefer, you may donate money to the church, marked for ROC Christmas drive.) Suggested items are: Socks Pretty calendars Warm gloves and hats Wallets for men and /or women Shampoo Razors Lotion Deodorant Beef Jerky Canned meals (ie stew, chili, etc) Chapstick Warm scarves Conditioner Bar soap Tooth brushes and tooth paste Snack crackers Please place in box under Christmas tree! Thank you Out of Christmas gift ideas? The Social Ministry Committee has set up a table in the narthex with Christmas alternative giving ideas. How about giving 10 chicks for $10 that will go to a hard-working poor family somewhere in the world? Or a llama? Or help a community dig a well to provide clean water? Take a catalog to learn what you can give in honor of your loved ones through the ELCA's Good Gifts. 5

5 REGIONAL FOOD BANK Carolyn Zachritz Our loyal and mighty troupe of OLLC volunteers went to the Food Bank Saturday, November 1. This time we sorted goods that had been donated by assorted donors (everything from food to cleaning supplies to Christmas decorations!) Our groups sorted enough to fill 31 forklift pad containers, which was more than they usually accomplish. We sorted 13,950 pounds of goods - enough to equal 11,625 Equivalent Meals. If you haven't participated, please consider joining us next time, December 7. We need your help! Christian Education for December Adults A study of the parables taught by Pastor Jebsen December 8 Join the children for a Bible Quiz. Come to Sunday School December 8 when the Children s Sunday School challenges you to a Bible Quiz! It will be fun! Pink Yoplait yogurt lids are back! Please save them for the "Lids for Life" campaign to raise money for breast cancer. Place them in the pink sack on the counter in the Narthex. Thank you. The Lutheran The Lutheran Magazine has, after many years at the same price, increased the price by one dollar. The new group rate to you as Our Lord s Lutheran Church members will be $9.00. This is a January through December subscription cycle and your payment will be due in the church office no later than December 18. If payment is not received by the 18th, your subscription will not be renewed. If you do not have a subscription under this group plan and would like one, please contact the church office as soon as possible. 7 CHRISTMAS COOKIE PARTY Sunday, December 22 nd 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fellowship Hall Our Lord s Please accept this invitation to give us the chance to share some of the beautiful Christmas spirit with you as well as punch, coffee, and a delicious assortment of 100% homemade cookies from Joyce s oven. During November 1965, as Christmas in our first parish approached, Joyce suggested that we hold a Christmas cookie party for our congregation. That event initiated a tradition for us which has continued every year since that first time in We would like to offer this same Christmas gift from us to you this year on Saturday, December 22 nd, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Our Lord s. Please do stop in and give us the chance to wish you a blessed Christmas as well as share some delicious cookies, all baked with Joyce s TLC (tender loving care). Our Christmas Eve worship service will be at 7:00 p.m. on December 24 th with orchestra music adding to the festival worship. The church council designated the special offerings from Thanksgiving and Christmas to be divided equally between the Regional Food Bank and the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund. A final Open Forum on Worship will be held on Sunday, December 15 th following the worship service. At that time the Worship Task Force will share their deliberations and their recommendation for worship scheduling. Do plan to gather in the Fellowship Hall for a few minutes after worship on December 15 th. As 2013 draws to a close, do remember to thank God for His blessings to us during the past year. Transitions are always a source of anxiety as well as a source of anticipation. God promises that He has a good future in mind for us! As we keep our hearts and minds open to His inspiration and direction, the anticipation will overcome the anxiety as we look to the future and what God has planned for our ministry here.
