3 ADVENT Though grown-ups may not have Advent calendars themselves, perhaps we still share a little in a child s growing excitement at the prospect of Christmas, as our children or grandchildren open each window? The thrill of expectation may be entirely mercenary in the hearts of the young (what am I going to get this Christmas?!), coupled with the excitement which surrounds this season as the Christmas lights go up. However, all these things do give the grown-ups an opportunity to direct the young in discovering spiritual values which the world of commerce has very cleverly commandeered for its own purposes. In Advent, the church hears about John the Baptist calling everyone to get ready for the Messiah by a baptism of repentance. Change your attitude towards God and your neighbour. Discover through the renewal of your faith renewal of life with family, friends and community. I would suggest there are two ways in Advent we can rediscover our relationship with God and renew our relationships with all those around us. First, many people in the Heart of Eden have some connection with a religious organisation, whether it be Anglican, Methodist, Baptist or Roman Catholic. This is an ideal time to reconnect with your faith community, whether it be the Town Carol Service at the Sands, the very popular Christingle services in many parts of our area, or the numerous family/ child friendly activities organised by the churches in Appleby and villages (such as Messy Church). There are so many ways in which you can find a way for you and your family of all ages to rediscover a living faith in a very accessible way. Second, Advent inspires us to renew our relationships with all those around us. So why not reconnect with family and friends? Don t put off that visit you were meaning to make. Is there something extra you can do for those nearby, could you make a different kind of contribution to community life this Christmas? If we think about it, there are so many practical steps we can take, which amount to renewal of our lives and faith. Advent is a season of wonderful opportunity for us all and may it lead us and all those we love to the blessings of a happy Christmas! God bless you and your loved ones this festive season. Peter Boyles, Associate Priest in the Heart of Eden benefice Looking for spiritual food? All welcome to find it at : The Filling Station. Every second Thurs. In the month, 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Appleby Hub, (formerly Centre 67). Each meeting starts with refreshments. 10 Mumming. Mumming is an ancient custom that was an excuse for people to have a party at Christmas! (Don t forget, they had no T.V, radio, cinema, DVD s etc. in those days). Mumming means making a diversion in disguise. The tradition was that men and women would swap clothes, put on masks and go visiting their neighbours, singing, dancing or putting on a play with a silly plot. The leader or narrator of the mummers was dressed as Father Christmas. The custom could go back as far a Roman times, when people used to dress up for parties at New Year. It is thought that in the UK, it was first done on St. Thomas s day or the shortest day of the year. Some official Mumming plays were held on stage and in churches. Different types of entertainments were done in different parts of the UK, particularly in England., sometimes involving sword dancing. In Medieval times, the unofficial events had turned into an excuse for people to go begging round the houses and committing crimes. It became so bad that Henry VIII decreed that masked mummers would be imprisoned.. One Mumming chant was Christmas is coming, the beef is getting fat, Please drop a penny in the old mans hat Beef was later changed to the Goose and drop became put a penny as we know the chant today. The Mumming Tradition is still carried on in parts of the U.K, Canada and America. Can you spot ten or more differences? (Hard) The Mystery of the noisy neighbour A lively Christmas animated film with sound and music that tells the story of the Nativity from the view point of a Mouse Detective. The Bible Society explains: watch this short film for a new perspective of the Nativity.. The film is available to watch or download for use at home, in churches, schools and wherever else you'd like to screen it. Go to: Please Care for the wildlife this winter. 10
