OCT/NOV 2017 Connections Nov. 23, 10AM St. Jude s Episcopal Church 815 E Graves Ave, Orange City, FL RECTOR S REFLECTIONS Sunday Services 8AM Rite I Nursery provided 10:30AM Rite II Sunday School, Nursery provided 5PM Prayer and Praise A contemporary service of worship, prayer and healing 4th Sunday of the month Tuesdays John Knox Village Chapel 11AM Wednesdays 10AM Service with Communion November was blown in by some serious storms and winds. Our summer ended very quickly and brought temps down to what is normal for us. Now that the doors and windows have been opened up for a few days, we ve begun to feel like fall is truly upon us. With autumn comes a time of reflection, looking back at family, friends and neighbors of times past. I ve had the joy this week to look back through old vestry meeting notes and the register of church services for St. Jude s. I found some truly interesting things like the first Sunday service was on January 23, 1983 and the very first Sunday in this building was on November 18, 1984 with 100 people in attendance! Looking back at our history helps us to look forward to what God might have in store for us in the years to come. As the year comes to a close, may we thank God for the many blessings of the past and praise Him for the challenges yet before us. Blessings, Phyllis+ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

CONNECTIONS PAGE 2 GOLF TOURNAMENT St. Jude s first Golf Tournament was a great success. Thanks goes out to Mark Donley for leading us in this new adventure. Plans are in the making for our second annual tournament next year. Net proceeds were $ 2, which are designated for the building fund. We had 18 hole sponsors supporting the event and 52 players participating! There was a chance to win $ 10,000 for the first hole in one. During the year if you know of a business that would like to sponsor a hole please let Mark or the office know so we can send out the appropriate paperwork. This years donation to sponsor was $ Marina Cox, St. Jude s member and player said she had such a fun time. Lunch was so good and even though she doesn t play very well she had the best time. Barbara Holladay, St. Jude s member and volunteer worker said she had a great time helping out checking the players in and everyone was so nice. Joy Reale, church member and volunteer drove the golf cart back and forth dropping off water and such to players. Said she learned a lot about golf and had so much fun even though she got lost on the course many time! Word has gotten back to St. Jude s that our volunteers were so friendly and outgoing. Looks like fellowship was all around! And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Collosians 3:17 JR. WARDEN Thanks to the help from Joan and Bill Gardner, the back area has been cleaned of most of the storm debris. Toilets have been fixed, and the kitchen sink will be next. Many have been working on the stage, and it is coming along good. The playground is up and running. The latest piece of equipment has been installed. The memory garden has been cleaned up and looks nice. The water line leading to the sprinkler system to the garden has been repaired. Thanks to all of you who have helped keep God's property looking great. In Christ's name, Bernie HELPING HANDS Our meetings always start with a discussion of any random acts of kindness the members have done during the month. This has really taken off with all of us being more aware of how we respond to the needs of others. Suggestions were made to how we could be of help to the victims of the hurricanes that have plagued so many. A small group has been formed to discuss the issue. Cards, etc. will be sent to Josh after his initial training has been completed and he is more easily able to access them. Plans for our holiday families will be next on our list. Please come to our uplifting meetings held on the last Sunday of each month, 9 AM. Blessing to all, Jan

CONNECTIONS PAGE 6 MISSION TRIP A couple of weekends ago my family and I answered the call to go to the Florida Keys to help with Hurricane Irma recovery. I know there are other areas of the Caribbean that are suffering hurricane damage, but the Keys were accessible for us. This was the first time we had done something like this and it was quite and eye opener! As I am sure you know, the main route into the Keys is US 1 which is mostly a two lane road. As we drove into Key Largo we saw lots of tree debris and many signs that say #keysstrong. Most of the buildings are either intact or have been repaired and many of the businesses were open. As you travel further south the landscape changes quite a bit. The closer we got to Marathon the area looked like another planet. There were MOUNTAINS of tree debris! There is an RV park in which every RV is either severely damaged or completely destroyed. There are boats in places boats don t go or belong. There is furniture thrown about. Homes are damaged or destroyed and people walking around in the heat trying to clean up, very surreal. We were based in Marathon at the parish of St. Columba the rector is Rev Debra Maconaughey. We were working in the church parish hall that has been turned into a warehouse. It is full of emergency supplies such as water, MREs, clothes, generators and other items that people can pick up for free. Generators were being loaned out. The line was pretty steady the whole time we were there and this is almost 3 weeks after Irma blew through. We noticed that Rev Debra was making a lot of thing happen both at the church and out in town while we were there. Her congregation rented 7 campers for displaced people to stay until other housing arrangements could be made for them. The cost of each camper is $7000 for a 3 month rental. Rev. Debra managed to get the City of Marathon to waive some of their rules regarding temporary housing. As my family and I were organizing this makeshift warehouse we were joined by Anthony. Anthony just jumped in and started working with us. When we were finished I thanked him for all of his help. He told me that his home was completely destroyed and so was the place he worked. He and his family are living in one of the campers the church had rented and set up in the church parking lot. He said this was the least he could do to give a little back. There is a man named Rick who referred to himself as a displaced boater who was coordinating things on the church campus. He was making things happen also. Rick is a very friendly man, with great people skills. He worked steadily for days on end cleaning up and helping people load heavy items into their car and parking the campers as they arrived just to name a few of his tasks. I could go on and on about the work being done there but this letter would be very loquacious. There is a large FEMA presence, at both state and federal levels. Franklin Graham Ministries as well as the Red Cross and FEMA are set up at Big Pine Key. Big Pine Key is almost entirely wiped out. These organizations are doing the best they can with only a 2 lane road to work with. I have posted pictures on our Church Facebook page we took while we were there. There are giant mounds of debris everywhere, in front of homes, on the side of US 1, empty lots, everywhere. The picture with the palm tree that is surrounded by debris is where a home once stood. It was completely destroyed by a tornado while leaving the surrounding buildings intact. The yellow house is occupied by an 80 year old man. The south wall of his home was taken off by a tornado, but He still lives in there because there is no place to go. It is like that in almost all the homes in the neighborhood. There are brightly colored stickers on the homes. One color indicates the home is ok to receive electricity. The other indicated the home has been checked for human remains (I found that to be very shocking). The residents of the Keys, being Floridians and members of the Conch Republic, are a rugged bunch. They are working tirelessly to rebuild. We know our state is greatly dependent on tourism. The Keys are ENTIRELY dependent on tourism. Most of the businesses are small mom and pop places that don t have the financial backing of major corporations and are struggling to reopen. What the Keys really needs now are tourists. They need people in the small motels and restaurants. We stayed in a small motel that could only open 14 rooms to people who were helping clean up. It was not open to the public and the other rooms were too damaged to reopen. It was very clean, had air conditioning and running water. A great place to crash after a good day of work! Besides housing, the Keys need tourists!! I know the Floods are planning on returning at our first opportunity! Deacon Jim Flood

OCT/NOV 2017 PAGE 7 OCTOBER FESTIVAL The primary purpose of this article is to thank ALL of you for supporting the October 21 st Festival. The event was a success because the church members and friends came together, supported one another by participating, and together raised more than $2, for St. Jude s, As those who attended know, October 21 st was a glorious day with near perfect weather. Following an opening prayer by Rev. Phyllis Bartle, the entertainment began on the newly built stage. First there were five little girls, including our own Autumn Robertson, in orange tutus following Miss Tess, their teacher in a Monster Mash routine. Next there were performances by Bernadette Ayala, Skyler Huddlestun with Elizabeth Nunez, Carl Cole and Father Ed Bartle. Amy Yates with Kevin Bartle entertained with her voice and his guitar until it was time for the drawing. The music from the stage could be heard as Festival attendees walked among and talked with vendors/crafters, visited the pumpkin patch, watched children taking pony rides, bought apple butter and baked goods, and ordered food from the grill (brats, hot dogs, burgers). Our special thanks to the following members for their willingness to take on leadership of the various event areas: Applebutter Joy Reale Baking - Riek Fitzpatrick, Lora Huddlestun, Midge K Sepka Crafters/Vendors Sandra Yates Drawing Joan Gardner, Jan Jaynes Grill Johnny Huddlestun (Karin Debruijn for ticket design) Set-Up/ Clean Up Boy Scout Troop 544, Bill Gardner, Johnny Huddlestun, Bill McCabe, Robert McCabe Signs Youth Group The day ended with announcements about the drawing winners. Thank you ALL for your help. Riek Fitzpatrick, Barbara Holladay, Kathy McCabe, Committee Chairs For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 PUMPKIN PATCH Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This has been the most successful Pumpkin Patch ever, in so many ways. This is an annual community activity that brings people together. Families come to take Fall family photos, buy a ton of pumpkins, and local schools enjoy visiting, picking, and buying at the patch. Over 30 folks unloaded over a thousand pumpkins and gourds. This, activity contributes to good health and exercise. Thanks also, for Deacon Jim and family for providing a great BBQ. The Pumpkin Patch is a church wide annual event. Thanks to all who participated.

CONNECTIONS PAGE 8 ECW Our annual ECW yard sale was a great success! Thanks to our co-chairs, Barbara Holladay and Joy Reale and the many who donated, assisted in sorting, pricing, organizing, helped during the sales, and stayed till the end to see that we left no trace. We made over $ to support our projects this coming year. Joan Gardner and Tammy Robertson have started our visitation ministry, carrying our joy in Christ to those who cannot make it to the physical church. Others have been busy cleaning the church inside and outside, attending Bible study groups, Helping Hands, and more ways always carrying the message of Jesus Christ in their thought, words and deeds as they interact with the others. If you have a talent you want to share, a skill you want to learn, a topic to discuss, a project to put into play let s talk about a way to make that happen through the fellowship and worship of our organization. Please participate as you are willing and able. Our ECW Annual Diocese Meeting was at St. Augustine of Canterbury in Vero Beach. One of the highlights was our Joan Gardner being selected as the Woman of Distinction for the Diocese. In this position she will be able to attend the triennial in Austin, Texas. Congratulations for all you give. Our next meetings are November 4, and December 2. Cookie Walk is December 16. Start looking up your favorite Christmas cookie recipes. Katie Murphy, ECW President UNASHAMED The youth group is now headed up by a youth ministry team. Meetings are still held on Wednesdays from 5:30-8PM. If you can donate a meal or money for a meal to feed about 10 if would be much appreciated. Please let the office know if you are willing to do this. A signup sheet will be out soon as well. After the meal with fellowship, there is music, lessons, games, etc. Ages welcome are from 6th grade and up. They do not need to be a member of the church to participate. GIRL SCOUTS Girl Scout Troop 1332 is now meeting at the Church on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30PM. They already have volunteered to help the church with hurricane debris pickup and the pumpkin patch during our October Festival. Thanks to all the girls and welcome you as part of our St. Jude s family. BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP BSF has also begun to meet here at St. Jude s. They gather on Tuesday evenings from 7-8PM.
