1 JULY/AUGUST 2017 Connections St. Jude s Episcopal Church 815 E Graves Ave, Orange City, FL RECTOR S REFLECTIONS Sunday Services 8AM Rite I Nursery provided 10:30AM Rite II Sunday School, Nursery provided 5PM Prayer and Praise A contempory service of worship, prayer and healing 4th Sunday of the month Tuesdays John Knox Village Chapel 11AM Wednesdays 10AM Service with Communion As I sit here this afternoon, Vacation Bible School is in full swing. We got off to a great start of Lost at Sea with 29 kids, about 10 teens and a flood of adult volunteers in the kitchen, in the crafting, in the lessons, in the skits and in the games! How fun it is to see God at work in this event each summer!! Huge kudos to Kate Wallace and Tammy Robertson for their leadership! We are now in ordinary time in the church. It is the period in the Church calendar outside of other major seasons, and runs 33 or 34 weeks. In Latin, Ordinary Time is called Tempus Per Annum ("time throughout the year"). This season falls between Christmas and Lent, and also between Easter and Advent. You ll see green during this season a time for growth and flourishing as Christ s body. Don t forget St. Jude s as you vacation and take time with your family. Next week, our nation celebrates its two-hundred forty-first birthday. I pray that your celebrations are safe and joyful for this one nation, under God Blessings, Phyllis+ Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

ECW is here to serve the church and help each other grow in our love of the Trinity. Our traditional areas of service include: Fall events (Church Yard Sale, Pumpkin Patch, Fall Festival with apple butter sales, Turkey Dinner, St. Jude's Day, ECW Diocesan Annual Meeting) Winter events (Cookie walk, Christmas giving and celebrations) Spring events (Strawberry Festival with Baked Goods Sales, Women's Night Out, NE Diocese Meeting) Summer events (Vacation Bible School, renewal) Members have come forward with ideas for programs to accompany our First Saturday of the Month meetings. Other ideas are welcome. We look forward to seeing those of you who can attend our meetings, and those of you who can t attend we are appreciative of your help with our events. All women of the church are members and welcome to participate in the way that works best. Katie Murphy President ECW St. Jude's JOHN KNOX VILLAGE There is now a green recycling box on the floor next to the snack table in the Parish Hall. 6 CONNECTIONS PAGE 6 HELPING HANDS Outreach is in a slowdown mode for Summer, with everyone taking a breather until Fall. We continue to do our "Random Acts of Kindness" and keep homeless bags supplied in the Narthex box. We will also be making a sign for the bottom of the marquis to alert O.C. residents of the food and pet pantry. Jan Jaynes OCTOBER FESTIVAL Planning for the St. Jude s 2017 October Festival has started. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! October 21 It s just four months away. All St. Jude s members are encouraged to participate. Another great way to get to know one another! There will be baking, grilling, games, entertainment, and more. A meeting on August 27th at 9AM will provide more information. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! Riek Fitzpatrick Kathy McCabe Barbara Holladay Festival Chairpersons Kate Wallace Pumpkin Patch Chairperson BIBLE STUDY Look for more studies to begin in September. If you would like to lead a Bible Study, please see Rev. Phyllis. Small groups are a great way to get to know one another. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are in need of more volunteers to read the lessons during the Sunday services. Please let the office know if you are willing to do this. You can practice your reading ahead of time to be more comfortable. The lessons can be found through the church website. Click on Links and then The Lectionary Page. Once there select the date of your reading. If there happens to be a choice of your reading, just or call the office for the correct choice. Office stjudeschurch@embarqmail.com We also are in need of greeters. It is not a difficult ministry, we teach you as you go. Basically it is welcoming people as they enter, hand out bulletins, have them sign in or for newcomers, sign the guest book. Returning newcomers you can write their names in on the sign in sheet. Count attendance, bring down communion and receive the offertory. Pick up the sanctuary after service by organizing pew books and removing left bulletins and anything else left behind. The most needed volunteer/volunteers is a nursery leader. This person would organize the teachers to be in the Nursery during service times. We need to have oversight of the children at all times. This person also may take a turn during the service if they wish too. Service can be seen on the screen in the room. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:24-25

7 JULY/AUGUST 2017 PAGE 7 NEW EASIER ORDER FORMS AVAILABLE (Find in the Narthex or ask the Administrator) Support St. Jude s with no cost to you but your time in changing your cash for a card to spend at a location you are buying things anyway! Every card you get supports St. Jude s by a percentage of the card. You still have the full value purchased with no transaction fees. We ask that you purchase or prepay for your special order by cash or check. Credit cards charge us a fee taking away our donation. Personally I have been buying Discover to use at Publix for all my groceries. Shell to buy my gas. And when I need to run through those old fast food places because I am on the go, I keep on hand in my purse, Subway, Burger King, Wendy s, etc. ( I get the ones for this) I know we will be taking my grandkids to Dave and Busters this summer, so pre ordered a card from there to support my church and have some fun as well! It s really easy! Give it a try! Your friends and family are invited to purchase as well. A variety of cards that have been popular are kept on hand in the office. Please come by Monday Thursday between 9AM and 1PM. On Sunday s see Jan Jaynes at the 8AM service for cards on hand or myself at the 10:30AM service. Call me if these times do not work for you. Order forms are attached to this of course or will be available in the narthex for you to fill out and turn in with payment in the administrators mailbox to the right when you walk into the church. Please check out for all the Retailers that are available. There are many others participating across the country that you may want to get to send to family, friends and relatives in other States! I am currently working on the ScripNow form of cards that you will be able to download or print out for more on demand use. Will let everyone know when this gets up and running after all the details get worked out.
