1 FEBRUARY 2017 Connections St. Jude s Episcopal Church 815 E Graves Ave, Orange City, FL RECTOR S REFLECTIONS Sunday Services 8AM Rite I Nursery provided 10:30AM Rite II Sunday School, Nursery provided 5PM Unhindered A service of worship, prayer and healing 4th Sunday of the month Tuesdays John Knox Village Chapel 11AM Wednesdays 10AM Rite I It s February time for Presidents Day and Valentine s Day, for Groundhog Day and pancake day (Shrove Tuesday). There are many things to celebrate and to cause us to pause during this month. We are still in the season of the Epiphany. The time when we recognize the light of Christ coming into the world and into our hearts and shining upon all of us in new and special ways. In the midst of that, we take time out to celebrate our loved ones and bring joy to their hearts. Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on our own understanding. Let Jesus in to your heart this season, let His light shine through you. Blessings, Phyllis+ Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. Isaiah 60:1
2 CONNECTIONS PAGE 2 APPRECIATION Deacon Wanda, Deacon Pauline, Sandra Yates and Rev. Phyllis want to thank everyone for their gifts at Christmas. The kind thoughts are very much appreciated. It is an honor to serve you all! SHROVE TUESDAY Tuesday February 28, :30-6:30PM Come One, Come All! FOOD PANTRY The day is also known as Fat Tuesday or in French Mardi Gras. This is the day just before the beginning of the Lenten Season. The Men s Group will be in charge of preparing the meal. Please see Billy Lawrence for more information and to offer assistance. This is a free event, but donations are appreciated. The Food Pantry at St Jude's is a wonderful example of our outreach to the Orange City community's most needy residents. There are three of us who come together on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month in the Parish Hall. Our mission is to provide a bag of groceries to our guests, and along with that, to do our best to make them feel Christ's love as we fill their food bags. The majority of that food comes from the generosity of you, our St Jude's parishioners as you place donations in the wicker basket at the rear of the nave. On behalf of our guests, we are deeply grateful to you for sharing from your hearts. Jim Valk For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? Matthew 25:35-40
3 FEBRUARY 2017 PAGE 3 AN EASY WAY TO HELP SUPPORT Don t forget to bring your aluminum cans to church. What an easy way to bring in funds to help the kids go to Youth Retreats, Summer Camp and other events. Please do not put bags and other carriers of your items in the bins as they will deduct from our earnings. Support St. Jude s by getting your car washed! Top Shelf 3119 Howland Blvd. Deltona, FL 20% of every dollar spent at their facility will go to the church. Just type in promo code 2100 before you go thru the wash. 4 CONNECTIONS PAGE 4 CHURCH OUTING The Orlando Solar Bears (our Central Florida hockey team) are hosting a "Faith & Family Weekend" at the Amway Arena in downtown Orlando. The dates are: Thursday--Feb. 7pm Friday-----Feb. 7pm Sunday----Feb. 1:30pm. Tickets are $14 for area sections behind the 'net' or $20 for 'center ice' section *These prices do not include any of the extras they do offer, like Broom Sweep or group picture down on the ice with the players. We would like sign-ups and money in by Monday, Feb. 13th. (payable to St. Jude s, solar bears in memo) Our contact, Doug Perri, mentioned that we can purchase either priced ticket. He says he can block off our section of seats based on how many will be purchased by our group. As of Sunday, we have decided that Friday, the 17th would be ideal for most, especially since it's the weekend. When the church did this last time as a group, we met at the church at a designated time and drove to the Amway together. That may be the case again and hopefully we all get down there together. We will try to park in the parking garage across from the Amway, making it easier to get to. When I find out how much parking is, I will let you know. PLEASE bring your family, friends, co-workers, church friends, etc. for a night of fun! So, even if you've never been to a hockey game or don't know anything about hockey-----it doesn't matter, you will have FUN!!! Come "Chuck a Puck" for a charity/cause. The key to keeping the kitchen in tip top shape is when everybody who uses the kitchen cleans up after themselves, washes dishes, utensils and put them away in the right place. No dishes in the dish rack. Wipe the counters and sweep the floor, so that the next person or group can start with a spotless kitchen. The cleaning service vacuums and mops the floor once a week. Thank you for your cooperation Riek Fitzpatrick VESTRY On Sunday, January 29, we had our Annual Church Meeting. We want to thank Karin debruijn and Jim Flood for serving their 3 year terms on the vestry. We are very grateful for their time in taking care of all the responsibilities and business of the Church. We also want to congratulate our two new vestry members that were voted in to serve 3 year terms: Bernie Pitt and Jan Jaynes.
