1 AUGUST 2018 Connections St. Jude s Episcopal Church 815 E Graves Ave, Orange City, FL RECTOR S REFLECTIONS We are all used to thinking about stewardship in the Fall when the church asks for pledges for the upcoming year. Most of us don t like it too much but we endure it so that the church can raise the funds necessary to run the day to day operations. Sunday Services 8AM Rite I Nursery provided 10:30AM Rite II Sunday School, Nursery provided Tuesdays John Knox Village Chapel 11AM Saturdays Fourth Saturday of the Month 6PM Worship Music/Prayer August 25 Social Time Following Service But stewardship is not an annual event we hold only in October and November. Stewardship is what we do with what God has entrusted to us all the time, throughout the year. We are going to begin to look at all the areas as individuals and as a congregation where we can improve our stewardship everything from how we welcome the stranger, to how we care for our bodies and how we care for creation. We will over the coming months identify themes for each month and offer resources and suggestions for each topic. It is my prayer that everyone will come up with other ideas to supplement and share what we are attempting. In August, we will look at the Stewardship of Welcome. Hebrews 13: 1 says Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. This is the time of year when many visitors come through our doors. Do we welcome them? Make them feel at home? If they are unfamiliar with the Liturgy do we offer to show them the ropes? Blessings, Phyllis+ Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7
2 CONNECTIONS PAGE 2 BROTHERHOOD OF ST. ANDREW It's hard to believe summer is coming to a close and soon the kids and teachers will be back at it. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is working hard to get things rolling. We experienced a bit of a setback when Johnny Huddleston resigned as our President because of now working full time out of Jacksonville. That's quite a distance from St. Jude's! We will be nominating candidates and electing a new President next month. Our meeting days are the 3rd Sunday of the month at noon. All males 16 or older are welcome. Deacon Jim THE LEAST OF THESE I would like to thank the congregation for supporting my clothing ministry at school. You have been extremely generous in clothing and monetary donations. A couple of times the supply of clothing got a little thin then someone at St. Jude's would drop off some clothes and we were able to keep things going for those who need help. The Floods will be spending time before school starts reorganizing the room at school where the clothes are stored. Thank you for your help! Deacon Jim DAUGHTERS OF THE KING The DOK has had a fairly quiet summer. We did hold our Triennial Convention in Austin, Texas. Central Florida's own Krisita Jackson was elected national president. We are so proud. She will make a wonderful leader. Our next meeting is a DOK board meeting on August 11 in Lake Placid. There is a flyer with more information on the bulletin board in the narthex. In September, the Diocese will hold our Fall Assembly at St. Barnabas in Deland. That will be on September 15. More information to come later. Everyone enjoy the rest of the summer. Be safe, and God Bless. Pauline Butler, Sec. The native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. Acts 28:2 BRUNCH BUNCH Our next gathering for fellowship and food will be August 5 about 12:30 at the Cocky Rooster on Howland Blvd. in Deltona. All are invited to join. If you can, please let Deacon Pauline know if you plan to join us so a reservation for the appropriate number of folks can be made. See the last page of this newsletter for contact information. Come one, come all! PAPER RECYCLE There is a green recycling box on the floor next to the snack table in the Parish Hall. It's for PAPER ONLY, and will benefit the John Knox Village Employee Appreciation Fund. ECW September 1 at 9AM will be our next meeting after having summer break. All women are encouraged to attend. Even if you cannot attend, please participate whenever possible in our many tasks. All women of the church are considered members. The ladies Fall Yard Sale is scheduled for October 13 and 14. Keep your gently used items for donation until closer to the event. A date will be announced for drop off.

Due to a generous gift from WellCare, a local health management organization, we have started to make the Pantry available on a weekly basis. For the past month we have averaged 8 guests per week - representing over 20 family members who have been fed each week. Your kind generosity toward the Pantry by way of food donated in the wicker basket at the back of the nave are a big part of our success. Our volunteers include Jan Jaynes, Riek Fitzpatrick, Joan Martell and myself. We are pleased to report that the Pet Food Pantry by HELP Animals has joined us in being open weekly. Their volunteers are Tom Canty and "Ro" Fox. We also play host to a representative of WellCare, who frequently comes in, and is able to assist our guests by answering their questions about Medicare and Medicaid. Our Pantry is a thriving operation! You help to make it happen.. You are welcome to drop in on any Tuesday, and also we would encourage you to let your neighbors who you believe to be in need of food assistance to make use of the Pantry. Our service is open to any person or family who live in Orange City or is a member of St Jude's. SCHOOL SUPPLIES We are collecting school supplies for our members in need and Orange City Elementary School this year. If you would like to participate, please have your donations to the church by Sunday August 12. Elementary school students use #2 pencils, glue sticks, pocket folders with and without prongs, pink erasers, crayons, and colored pencils. A full list can be found online at Orange City Elementary School s website. Don t forget the teachers as well. Classroom supplies are a great help to them such as tissues, hand sanitizer, dry erase markers, Clorox wipes, snacks, construction paper, zip lock bags to name a few. Jim Valk/Coordinator

8 CONNECTIONS MEMBERSHIP You are considered a member of record at St. Jude s if you have been baptized or confirmed right here at St. Jude s. If you had either of these done in another Episcopal Church you can transfer your membership from that church to St. Jude s. If you haven t done this, please contact the office to have a letter of transfer completed. If you have been confirmed in another church in communion with the Episcopal Church you can be received in by the Bishop when he visits St. Jude s about every 2 years. Before the Bishop makes a visitation, Confirmation classes are held for anyone ready for this Sacrament. You can also attend to just review all what you learned before. When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,... Matthew 25:31-46 ALTAR GUILD AT NATIONAL CONVENTION It was a great experience to attend the Triennial. We were not directly involved with the General Convention, except preparing the Altar for Communion. This was the responsibility of the Altar Guild for the daily Eucharist. It was amazing how well it was organized. Barbara Holladay and I served one night. There were 9 stations set up for serving approximately 2000 people. It was unbelievable how fast it was done. Interesting workshops and fieldtrips for the whole week were scheduled. One highlight was that the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry came to visit us in our meeting room for half an hour to talk to us. A whole day fieldtrip was to 6 painted Roman Catholic churches. They were beautiful inside with painted ceilings and statues. The best of all was the revival meeting where Bishop Curry did the sermon. He is amazing, he moved the audience to several standing ovations. All and all I had a fantastic time and wish more of us can go to the next Triennial in 3 years in Baltimore. Riek Fitzpatrick
