1 Circuit Writer MONTHY NEWSLETTER OF THE ERLANGER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OCTOBER 2016 I never knew this picture even existed. Maybe my memory is really bad, or it is possible that I never had seen it. But when sorting through the MOUNTAINS of stuff in my Dad s house, this picture appeared. I m sure it is on the occasion of my confirmation into the church, so this is in the vicinity of It s amazing the things you find. Sometimes you just get overwhelmed with the volume of stuff. Sometimes you get overwhelmed with sadness, but then sometimes you get overwhelmed with the memories, love and a sense of heritage and history. This picture got me to thinking about my faith journey. This was, other than my baptism, one of the earliest formal events of my faith journey. I remember the confirmation, even though I don t remember this picture at all. It got me thinking about all the events that have formed my faith and helped me grow. Some of them have been formal events, like the confirmation, but many, many of them have been more informal the youth group or VBS s, conversations with a friend, or moments doing personal Bible Study and devotional things. That got me thinking about all the people who have helped lead me down the path. So many of us think, it s just God and me. I get sick every time I hear someone say that. There are so many people who contribute to our spiritual journey and rightfully so. Some of them play big roles, and some of them play small roles, but all of them are important roles. Think about the individual writers of the Upper Room, which I read almost every day. Each of them have contributed to my life. Think about the authors of Sunday School literature or the people who have given us rides to a church event. Think about those who have cooked food for an outing or paid for something that we didn t even know about. All of those people have worked together to make our spiritual journey happen. I think that s what the writer of Hebrews meant when he/she said, surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. We give credit often to the people who played prominent roles in our lives, but
2 for every one prominent figure there are 20 or 30 or more smaller roles that were important to the event. Think of who they might have been, and thank God for them. And take some time to remember the journey of your spiritual life. Thank God for each step along the way. Take some time to pray for each day ahead as well. Following Jesus is a daily thing. We don t just ask Jesus into our hearts one day, then think everything is settled for eternity. Following Jesus is a daily decision and a daily effort. So pray about where following Jesus would lead you tomorrow and the next day and even next year. Be open to God taking you to new places and to doing new things. And appreciate each step of the way. Let s journey with Christ together. I guarantee you it will take us all to a good place. See you in church! Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; Matthew 6:25 Pastor s Payer: Lord, Lift up my Pastor and his family. Place them in the shelter of the Most High to rest in the shadow. You will say of the Lord, You are their refuge and fortress. You will preserve their family time. You will cover their home. Your faithfulness will meet their financial needs in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). You will command Your angels to guard them as they travel and win the lost You have said I will be with(them) in trouble, I will deliver (them) and honor (them). With a long life, I will satisfy (them) and show (them) my salvation (Ps. 91:15-16). In Jesus name I cancel all assignments of the enemy against them. Amen

12 MAYO TAYLOR AWARD Award to be presented Sunday, October 30, 2016 The Mayo Taylor Award was established in 1980 to honor Mayo Taylor, who gave of himself unselfishly to his church, community and the world. It is the desire of the Award establishers that the recipients should have given of their efforts in a way to depict the life of Mayo Taylor in their years of service and commitment to the Erlanger United Methodist Church. Their outstanding achievements will be acknowledged before the church on a designated Sunday each year by the Search Committee. Mayo Taylor was a truly unique individual. He had very little interest in the prospect of being a wealthy, successful businessman. This attitude was puzzling to many aspiring young men who felt that financial achievement was the only way to gain respect. He was deeply concerned and dedicated to the needs of the community and particularly of the Erlanger United Methodist Church. He believed sacrifice and service took precedence over comfort, convenience, and security. His faith and Christian leadership was an inspiration to all. Guidelines to consider when nominating a person or married couple who most exemplify Mayo Taylor and previous recipients include: 1. A total love and commitment to the Lord and His church. 2. A member of the Erlanger United Methodist Church 3. A person or married couple whose dedication, through many years of volunteer service and love of the Lord, most depicts that of the life of Mayo Taylor.
