1 Circuit Writer MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE ERLANGER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH AUGUST 2015 FROM THE PASTOR We ve had a really good summer at EUMC! God has blessed us and things are going well. The beginning of the school year will be soon, and again, it s hard to believe the summer is almost gone. I have a few important things to mention to you.. 1. This Sunday, August 2, there will be a District Conference to officially restructure the old Covington District into the new Northern Kentucky District. We will be adding two counties on both east and west sides, I believe, so we will be a lot bigger! A new district map is enclosed in the newsletter. The District Conference will be at Alexandria UMC at 2 p.m. Sunday. 2. We have had a wonderful slate of activities this summer! VBS was a delightful week this year. Thanks to all our children s helpers for their hard work and desire to serve the Lord in that way. Also, our Mission trip to Louisiana was an amazing week for all who were involved. You really need to consider going on this trip next year. Dates for 2016 will be July for YOUTH and August 1320 for ADULTS. We have 12 spots each week reserved. If you have any doubts about going, just talk to a mission team member! They will tell you it was an amazing experience. In addition to that, our Ice Cream Social was a lot of fun, and it was wonderful to have the Hills of Kentucky Dulcimer Society with us last week during worship. God has really done great things in our midst so far!
2 3. We still have some fun planned for the summer. Faith Day at Great American Ballpark is this Sunday, so that will be fun. We are also starting some new Sunday School Classes this month (for Adults and children/youth! Are YOU coming to Sunday School?!) Our Lincoln Woods Worship Service is still slated for August 16. That has consistently been delightful! You will want to bring a friend with you! 4. Fall promises just as much life and love with our Steak night coming up, our trip to Lake Junaluska, our All Saints Celebration and much more as well. It s very plain that God is doing good things in our church. We are taking in new members, we are growing in faith and love, and we are looking into new ways of serving God and our neighbors. That s what it s all about. I hope you are feeling God s presence come alive in our church. It s clearly happening. Won t you open your heart and life to God working in you, too? See you in church!

9 HELP US OUT! Please call the church office if you or a loved one goes into the hospital or rehab or especially something like Hospice. Don't assume that we know or that someone else called. Health care facilities DO NOT notify the church, and sometimes it is very difficult to figure out where you or your loved one is. If you do not give permission upon admission for us to know, they won't even tell us you're there when we call to ask. We want to be supportive of you and your family in times of misfortune, but we do need your help by passing on vital information to us. Thank you for your help and understanding! James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Then that person should send for the elders of the church to pray over them. They should ask the elders to anoint them with olive oil in the name of the Lord. Beginning Tuesday, September 1 Disciple Bible Study What is DISCIPLE? Disciple is an amazing Bible Study experience that was started back in 1987 as an effort by the United Methodist Church to increase interest in serious Bible Study among its membership It was originally designed as a 39 week program that met once a week for almost 3 hours each week. The study took participants through the whole Bible and it helps each individual get a better picture of the Li Europan lingues es membres del sam familie. Lor separat existentie es un myth. It is a 24 week study (12 weeks on the Old Testament and 12 weeks on the New Testament), and each weekly session lasts only minutes. We have been using this new version of Disciple at our church. We have been through one cycle of the 24 week program, and are looking to start a second year We will try to have 2 classes, both on Tuesdays. One will meet at 10 a.m. Li Europan lingues es membres del sam familie. Lor separat existentie es un myth. Por scientie, musica, sport etc, li tot Europa usa li sam vocabularium. If you would like to have a picture of the whole story of the Bible, then Disciple is for you. If you would like to understand how the prophets and the judges and the kings all fit together with the story of Jesus, then Disciple is for you. If you would like to grow in your faith, then Disciple is for you. You will need to commit to reading minutes a day in the Bible, and make each week s group meeting a priority on your schedule. But you will come out with an amazing awareness of God s love and the salvation story for your effort. Each participant will need a study guide. You may borrow or purchase this. Cost for purchase is $35. If you are interested, please talk to the Pastor or call the church office. This will be an unbelievable time of growth for each person who joins in. YOU WILL NOT REGRET SIGNING UP TO BE A PART OF THIS STUDY!!!

14 FAMILY PROMISE MINISTRY At our last Council on Ministries meeting, we voted to move forward with a project proposed by our Missions Committee. This has not gotten final approval yet, but we are interested in being a host church for the Family Promise Ministry. You may remember our previous involvement with Interfaith Hospitality Network this is the same ministry. It was restructured to Family Promise of Northern KY several years ago. Because of administrative problems, the ministry had to close down. Several people who see a great need in our community are trying to get it started again. This is a ministry that offers shelter for homeless families in our area. Currently there is no place where a family can stay together during a period of crisis. We would host 2-4 families (no more than 15 people total) for a week at a time, 4-6 times a year. We would most likely do this on the third floor of our building. The families would arrive hear between 6 and 6:30 p.m., get a meal and a place to sleep, and would leave between 5:30 and 6 a.m. the next morning. These clients would be screened through Family Promise and have background checks. During the day kids would be in school and parents would get help with job placement and home placement, among other things. Showers and other services would be available at the day center they would use. For our church to participate, we would need volunteer hosts to stay with our guests. We would ask for members to volunteer 1 night each of the weeks we host. We will need 2 volunteers each night. You would need to stay all night, but you could sleep during that time (bed time is about 10 p.m.). Your purpose would be to help with things like meals, make sure things go okay, make sure everyone gets up in time, and help with a continental breakfast. On rare occasions you might help get someone to a doctor if they got sick. There would be some training for other minor hosting duties. If you would consider helping with this, please see the Pastor, or Jackie McPeters, or call the church office. It would not be hard, and it would mean the world to the clients we serve. Hopefully this program will be up and running before the really cold weather starts this winter, but a lot of things have to happen before this ministry can start back up. We cannot do this unless we have people willing to host, so pray about this and let us know if you are interested.

16 HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS! As most of you know, several areas of Kentucky have been hit hard by flash flooding. There is an urgent need for supplies for the people of these areas. If you are interested in helping, please select from the list below and bring your items to church. You can bring them during the week to the church office or on Sunday we will have a collection bin as well. We will take these items to the distribution center early next week after Sunday, July 26 and then again early the week after Sunday, August 2. Thank you for any help you can give and please keep these families in your prayers. As soon as these areas are set up for work teams, we will try to send a team to go help. If you would be interested, you can reply to this and let us know, or you can call the church office ( ). Here is the most current list of items needed in the area: Aspirin/Tylenol Baby diapers Baby food Baby formula Baby wipes Batteries Blankets/pillows Bottled drinking water Bug Spray Cleaning supplies Clorox Wipes Contact lens solution First Aid care items Flash lights Personal care items Toilet paper Paper towels Lysol Rubber boots Rubber gloves Mops, buckets, brooms, dustpans Nonperishable food items
