3 FAMILY TIME Week 1 Discussion Time Day 1 (Luke , 26-34, 37-38, 57-66) What two promises did the angel Gabriel bring to earth? Why were these promises hard to believe? Day 2 (Luke ) Why is Jesus birth the most important event in history? Who saw angels after Jesus was born? What message did the angels bring? Day 3 (Luke 3.2-6, 15-16, 21-22) What special job did God give to John? What did the voice from heaven say when Jesus was baptized? Bible Trek: Luke 3

4 Day 4 (Luke , 28-30, 42-43) Why didn t Jesus get a hometown hero s welcome in Nazareth? What did Jesus say was his purpose for coming to earth? What part of that can be our purpose for being on earth? Day 5 (Luke ) Why did Jesus choose ordinary, hardworking people to be his disciples? How are we disciples of Jesus? Memory Verse Fun Break down the verse into phrases. Write each phrase on separate pieces of paper and post on the kitchen wall. Say the verse together at least three times. Then begin removing phrases, one at a time, until each member of the family can say the complete verse without help. Memory Verses (Little Kids) Nothing is impossible for God! Luke 1.37 (Big Kids) The Lord s Spirit has come to me, because he has chosen me to tell the good news to the poor. The Lord has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to free everyone who suffers, and to say, This is the year the Lord has chosen. Luke Luke 4 Challenge Make this year one in which your family shares the love of Jesus with others! What can you do together to encourage, help or serve someone who needs it? Here are some suggestions: Offer to babysit for a single parent you know. Make a special meal or bake some cookies for someone who is sad or discouraged. 5 FAMILY TIME Week 2 Discussion Time Day 6 (Luke ) Why is God s way often not the easy way? Which of Jesus hard teachings in this chapter is the hardest for you? Day 7 (Luke ) Why was Jesus surprised at the army officer s faith? What did Jesus say to the people who asked him if he was the one John had said would come? Day 8 (Luke ) Do you think Jesus knew there would be a storm, before he went to sleep? q q What did you learn about Jesus in Colossians 1:16? How do those words make you feel? Bible Trek: Luke 5

6 Day 9 (Luke , 23-24, 46-48) Which of these God s way teachings of Jesus is the hardest for you to obey? Why do we need the Holy Spirit s help to do things God s way? Day 10 (Luke ) Why did Jesus choose a Samaritan to be the hero of his story? After reading this story, who would you say is your neighbor? Memory Verse Fun Write each word of the memory verse on a separate paper plate or piece of paper. Say the verse together at least three times. Move the plates/paper around so the words are out of order and let each family member try to put them back in the right order. Variation: Make two sets and turn this into a race for the whole family! This Week's Memory Verses (Little Kids) Treat others just as you want to be treated. Luke 6.31 (Big Kids) If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross every day and follow me. Luke 9.23 Luke 4 Challenge We ve learned this week that God s ways are not like our ways. We re told to love those who we aren t used to loving! How can your family show love to people like that? Here are some suggestions: Make a tray of sandwiches and fruit and take it to a local homeless shelter. Spend some time with senior citizens at an assisted living facility. Play board games, read books out loud, ask them about their favorite memories. Bible Trek: Luke 6

7 FAMILY TIME Week 3 Discussion Time Day 11 (Luke ) Why is it important that we go to God to ask for help even though he already knows what we need? The prayer of Jesus in Luke is known as The Lord s Prayer. Can you say that together as a family? Day 12 (Luke ) Why is it so hard for us not to worry? How is that connected to our faith in God? How does it make you feel to know that you are valuable to God? Day 13 (Luke ) Have you ever felt so small and unimportant that you thought God couldn t use you for his kingdom work? q q How does the story of the mustard seed help you see the difference you can make in God s kingdom? 8 Day 14 (Luke ) Why is it so hard to let other people go first or sit in the best seats? Why did Jesus tell the rich man who gave the dinner to invite poor people the next time instead of people who could repay him? Day 15 (Luke ) Which of these stories about lost things is your favorite? Why? In the story of the lost son, what did the father do when he saw the son coming home? What does that tell you about God s love for those who are lost? Memory Verse Fun Write the memory verse, broken down by phrases, on a large piece of paper and put it on the wall so everyone can see it. Put a balloon or beach ball in the center of a blanket or tablecloth. With the whole family around the blanket, toss the balloon or ball into the air while taking turns saying a phrase of the verse until the verse is completed. Now say it all together! Luke 4 Challenge This Week's Memory Verses (Little Kids) Ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Luke 11.9 (Big Kids) Ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. Luke We learned this week that we can help grow God s kingdom by the way we treat other people. Here are some things you could do to show kindness and generosity to others: Mow the grass, clean up the yard or wash some windows for your neighbor, as a surprise. The next time you re playing a game, choose someone first for your team who doesn t usually get chosen first. Bible Trek: Luke 8

9 FAMILY TIME Week 4 Discussion Time Day 16 (Luke ) Why is it easier to make ourselves look good to everyone else than to show what s really in our hearts? What did Jesus mean when he said, The things that most people think are important are worthless as far as God is concerned? Day 17 (Luke ) In the story of the ten lepers, Jesus told them to act as though they were healed (by going to the priests) before they actually saw the healing in their bodies. What was Jesus teaching them about faith? Why was Jesus surprised that only one of the lepers came back to say thank you? What special blessing did Jesus give the one who came back? Day 18 (Luke ) Why did Jesus say it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into God s kingdom? Besides money, what are other things that might keep people from following Jesus? Bible Trek: Luke 9

10 Day 19 (Luke ) Why did Jesus ask his disciples to get a little donkey for him to ride on? Look up Zechariah 9.9 in the Old Testament for a clue. Why did Jesus say the rocks would shout his praises if people in the crowd had to be quiet? Day 20 (Luke ) Do you think the people who were listening to this story understood that Jesus was talking about his own death? Why or why not? Look up Psalm 24.1 in your Bible. What does that verse say about who owns the earth? Memory Verse Fun Write each word of the memory verse on a separate paper plate. Place the plates on the floor and take turns using them as stepping stones, saying the word on each plate aloud as you land on it. Say the words loudly; try again saying the words very softly; again, say the words slowly; and again, as a silly song. Luke 4 Challenge This Week's Memory Verses (Little Kids) You are always making yourselves look good, but God sees what is in your heart. Luke 16.15a (Big Kids) You are always making yourselves look good, but God sees what is in your heart. The things that most people think are important are worthless as far as God is concerned. Luke Jesus taught that in order to bring the kingdom of God into this world, we must act as his agents of love. Here are some suggestions for your family to do this week as you show God s love to the world: As a family, look around your house and go through your closets to find all the things and clothes in good condition that someone else might enjoy or that you aren t using and donate them to a thrift store. With your family, make Everyday Packs for a homeless shelter: fill shoebox-sized containers with personal items like a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a disposable razor and a small towel. 11 FAMILY TIME Week 5 Discussion Time Day 21 (Luke ) What did Jesus mean when he said the widow had put more in the offering box than the rich people? Why is it hard to give to others what we think we need for ourselves? Day 22 (Luke , 54-62) Why was Peter afraid to say he knew Jesus? Why are we afraid or ashamed to talk about Jesus sometimes? Day 23 (Luke , 13-25, 44-56) Why did Jesus have to die? q q Read verses After Jesus died, who took care of his body? Where was it placed? Bible Trek: Luke 11

12 Day 24 (Luke , 36-53) Why do you think the women who went to the tomb believed the angels words? Why do you think the disciples did not believe the women s words about Jesus rising from the dead? Who was the only disciple who went to the tomb to see for himself? Day 25 (Luke ) Who is the one that Jesus promised his Father would send to the disciples? Where does Jesus live now? This Week's Memory Verses (Little Kids) [Jesus said] The sky and the earth won t last forever, but my words will. Luke (Big Kids) [Jesus] told them, The Scriptures say that the Messiah must suffer, then three days later he will rise from death. They also say that all people of every nation must be told in my name to turn to God, in order to be forgiven. Luke Memory Verse Fun Choose one or more of the memory verse activities from Weeks 1-4 and have fun learning God s Word! Quiz each other and offer prizes to those who have learned all five verses. Keep up the practice and fun of memorizing Bible verses together as a family! Luke 4 Challenge The story of Jesus in the book of Luke has shown us how important it is to Jesus that we treat others with kindness and love. You and your family can make a big difference in other people s lives. Here are some ways to show God s love to people around you: Invite another family over for a game night just to get to know them better. Introduce yourself to a neighbor you don t know. Take some brownies or cookies as a friendship gift. Bible Trek: Luke 12
