1 This Week at First Christian Church For the week of JULY 3, 2018 A Note from Your Pastor Dear Friends, Hello! On the heels of a great vacation, I am excited to be back with you all. I am particularly excited about our conversation on race, bias, and diversity which begins on Thursday. Let me say a few things about it: * The conversation shared by adults and older youth will be based on the book Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving. Meanwhile, if you don t have the book or haven t read it, you are still welcome! While this book is a jumping off place for our conversation, you will be fully able to participate even if you haven t had a chance to read. * Summer is a busy time and the reality is that many of us won t be able to be make it to all four weeks of the class. I hope that you can make most of them, but again, don t let your schedule deter you from participating in the conversation. Come to the ones you can and learn with us. * This conversation is around topics that are often difficult to talk about. We will simply acknowledge that and find our way through. One of our strategies for this is that we will help each other remember that we can each speak only for ourselves and we can listen to learn. Different ones of us will have different experiences and all are welcome in this conversation. Just because your experience isn t like mine doesn t make it less true. This conversation will be better when we give each other space to be honest. * The groups for children and younger youth will focus on the same general topics with age appropriate activities. The children (1st 4th grades) will focus on celebrating diversity while the younger youth (5th 8th grades) will begin talking about racism and privilege. * We have asked for registration for this event. That is important for two reasons so those preparing the meals can know how many to prepare for and so we can have enough supplies for the children s/youth classes. If you plan to attend, please register right now using this link. It allows you to indicate what days you ll be present. It s good to be back and I m glad to be your pastor! If not before, then I hope to see you Sunday! Jill What s Going on in The Region? As a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we are part of the Upper Midwest Region. We often talk about regional church camps and the Christian Conference Center, but there is so much more to our region. Click here to read this month s regional newsletter it contains information about the upcoming All Congregational Gathering (August 24-25), a fall Women s Retreat, a possible Motorcycle Retreat, Disciples participation in the Iowa State Fair, and more. There are many ways you might connect.

3 This Week at First Christian Church July 3, 2018 Crisis Center Food Bank Needs YOU! Have you been wondering how you can respond to hunger and food insecurity in our area? Do you have 3 hours a week you could share for the next 6 months (or more)? The next Volunteer Training Session at the Crisis Center Food Bank is coming up. Applications for training are due by July 6. To apply to volunteer, click here or call Sydney Hofferber at (319) ext DVIP The following thank you arrived: Dear First Christian Church, Thank you so much for supporting The Domestic Violence Intervention Program s Summer Supply Drive. Your contributions will go a long way to help the victim/survivors that our agency works with! Best Wishes, D.V.I.P. We donated: Pkgs. of baby Diapers Pkgs. of baby Wipes Containers of Baby Formula Containers of Disinfecting Wipes Gift Card Women s briefs Deodorants Coffee & filters Cooking oil. Nice job and well done. THANK YOU INDEPENDENCE DAY LESSONS FOR CHURCH LIFE Return to the basics On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith, we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of course, Jesus. Honor the gift of freedom For freedom Christ has set us free do not submit again to a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom. Likewise, as citizens of God s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift with others. Enjoy community July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events. Be light in the darkness As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called to display the Gospel s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power as in, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you (Acts 1:8) share a root. Through God s power in us, we share Jesus dynamically! with others. Heidi Mann
