THE HILLS ARE ALIVE! A Newsletter of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church SSeeppt teembbeerr In This Issue_ Pastor s Note--1 Get to Know You--2 Shepherd Sale--3 Children & Youth--4 CIP Update--4 Wilda s Birthday--5 Shelter Update--5 Oktoberfest--5 Small Groups--6 October--7 The Hills Are Alive! is published every other month. We would like to thank the contributors for this newsletter, especially Pastor Marty, Anthony Green, Claudia Guenther, Karen Johnson, & the Blums Hey All, Later this month we are going to experience a season of blessings. As the fall gets going full speed we are going to celebrate two special worship services that help us connect God s promises with the rest of our community. On September 30th we will have a blessing of the new Joshua School, our students, and Children s Church. On October 7th, we gather for our second annual Blessing of the Animals service. These are great opportunities to attend and also to invite your friends. Connecting the reality of blessing is a key component of building relationships in our community. Over the summer we have been blessed to witness the answer to many prayers about the use of our building and our financial future. It seems that the connection with the Joshua School is not only going to happen, its going to be a blessing even more than we hoped for. To celebrate and share our thanksgiving with them, we are inviting the Joshua School, staff, students, and families to be with us as we offer a blessing on September 30th. We also invite our children and their families, all teachers, and students to join in this blessing. As a church, Lutherans have a long tradition of valuing the power and influence of education in the sanctification of the saints. We extend the blessing to all who are focused upon learning and growing in God s kingdom as the new school year is underway. The service will be immediately followed by a pot-luck in our fellowship hall. This year s Blessing of the Animals service is coming together again on October 7th at our regular worship time. We will gather with creatures great and small as we celebrate and give thanks for creation, and hear the call to live as stewards of creation. We ask God s blessing on our critters and friends, and we ll have a fun day that is blessed by new connections within our community. Please bring your furry friends and tell your neighbors that this service is something to not be missed! This year we are going to have a special prayer for pets who have died. This service is a life giving experience for sure. Please keep these dates in mind as you ponder the idea of inviting a neighbor or friend to be part of. These events are low key, fun, and exciting ways for us to live our faith in our zip code. Also they are a great opportunity to renew our faith in thanksgiving for all that God has done for us. May God bless you and our congregation as we extend our table of welcome in these special ways. Peace, Pastor Marty 1

Getting to Know You Danny & Linda Olson Danny was born in Forest City, IA. His family has long time ties of being on staff at Waldorf College. At age 5, his family moved to California and his parents became staff at Lutheran College. Danny grew up in the Lutheran faith and has a passion for Biblical history. Linda grew up in Ohio. She moved to California several years after High School and met Danny through her brother. Linda s brother and Danny were best friends. He set up the meeting and everything else is history. Linda and Danny moved to Boulder in 1991 for jobs with IBM. Currently Danny works as IT support for Gastroenterology of the Rockies. Linda runs a flower shop in her home. They joined Shepherd in They consider Shepherd as their family and we are thankful they are with us. Linda and Danny do many jobs around the property. Thank you for your faithful service. Ron & Bonnie Letz Ron and Bonnie grew up in Chicago. They met and married there. They have been married for 46 years. They have 2 sons; Bruce age 43 and Scott age 41. Both boys live in the area and are single. The Letz s moved to Boulder in 1969 for Ron s job at Bell Laboratories. They have been with Shepherd since that time. Shepherd started meeting at Heatherwood School back in the day before building the place we call home today. They have seen all the ups and downs of this congregation. Ron retired in He and Bonnie enjoy traveling to California to see family. They also enjoy traveling to National Parks and going out to new restaurants. Bonnie knits and is a member of Comfort Stitchers. Thank you, Ron and Bonnie, for all your years of service at Shepherd. We are very fortunate to have you as members. 2

Shepherd s Sale The BIG sale was held on Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18. It was a success! We earned $4000. We had 9 outside vendors and 11tables purchased by Shepherd members. The flea market was generously supported by donations from Shepherd members. The unsold items went to Hospice Thrift Shop. Hospice was thrilled with the quality of the items in our donation. The silent auction had 71 items for bidding. Not all items received a bid but this part of the sale brought in $1916. The items were given mostly by Shepherd members. The bake sale was a big hit. Even the vendors enjoyed delicious treats while they sold their goods. On Saturday, the Men s Breakfast group provided lunch. They earned $157. Everyone seemed to have fun both days. Thank you to Nina and Cindy for organizing. Thank you to Lisa and Karen for organizing the silent auction. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped at tables, the door, money station, bake sale, etc. Everyone did a great job!! 3

Children and Youth This year's children's church will be centered around the theme "Children in the Bible". With this in mind, we will be studying Samuel, Timothy, Jesus (and his life as a child from what we can glean from the Bible), Moses, Joseph, Josiah, David, and the story of Isaac and Ishmael. Each month's activities will be focused around the particular biblical child of the month, and the children will learn the story associated with this child, the historical context, and the meaning of this story as it relates to greater themes found throughout the Bible and Jesus's teachings. Children's church will officially start in October, after Rally Day blesses the upcoming season as well as the new Joshua school. Furthermore, for the Youth there will be monthly activities and discussions about hunger throughout the world. We have begun a pen-pal dialogue with some children through World Vision thanks to the wonderful work of Ali Gebhardt, and in November Shepherd will host a 30-hour famine, which physically and mentally enlightens its participants about the problem of hunger around the world. This year will also see more collaboration with Youth Groups of other churches in the Rocky Mountain Synod, as well as any other congregation that wishes to collaborate. It is sure to be a blessed year! CIP Update Things are going well with CIP. Because of the Joshua School, everything has been moved upstairs to the closet/room off of the narthex. Contact Ali if you would like to assist in any way and check out the new room. 4

Wilda s Birthday We had a celebration for Wilda s 87 th birthday on Sunday, September 2 nd. She was surprised as well as thrilled. She thanks everyone for such a nice party. We are serving dinner twice a month again this year. We are on the schedule for the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of each month through April from 5:30-7:30pm. Other friends from Shepherd join us for this activity. It is a lovely way to serve and you have fun too. Signup sheets are in the narthex or you can talk to Karen Johnson. Homeless Shelter Oktoberfest bei der Familie Blum Ihr seid herzlich eingeladen. Geniessen wir eine fröhliche Gesellschaft, leckeres Essen und gutes Bier You are invited to enjoy good company, good food, and good beer. Saturday, September 29, 2012 From 4:00 pm till??
