2 Carolina Cross Connection Carolina Cross Connection//Week of Mission//July Please be in prayer for the group of 15 heading out on Sunday, 7/16 to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Also please pray for the families that God will place in our path during the week we are away. This is the 10th year that Hill s Chapel has supported a group of young people and their adult leaders to go and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. We are looking forward to an amazing week of fellowship, fun and serving those in need! 5 Independence Day Lessons for Church Return to the basics On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith, we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of course, Jesus. Honor the gift of freedom For freedom Christ has set us free do not submit again to a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom. Likewise, as citizens of God s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift with others. Enjoy community July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events. Be light in the darkness As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called to display the Gospel s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power as in, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you (Acts 1:8) share a root. Through God s power in us, we share Jesus dynamically! with others. Your Ticket Is Stamped On a train trip, a pastor struck up a conversation with a seatmate who thought character and good works led to salvation. The pastor wasn t making progress but had a realization when the conductor collected tickets, quickly checking the date before stamping each one. After the conductor passed by, the pastor told his fellow passenger: All the conductor looked at was your ticket. He did not inquire about your character. He didn t care who you were whether you were a good or moral man or a criminal. So it is with salvation. You need only God s ticket to heaven stamped by the blood of Jesus Christ.

14 Pastor s Pen If last month was about packing and moving, that must mean this month is about unpacking! As one who moves every few years, I have a confession to make: there are certain boxes that never get unpacked. They get sent on the next move, where they take their rightful place in a closet under the stairs (like Harry Potter!). There, they await the next move. Please don t ask me what is in those boxes I can t remember! Well, this time was different. When I came to Hill s two years ago (yes, it s been two years now!), I was moving into a much smaller place than before. That meant there had to be a lot of downsizing. I sold or gave away many, many books (that was hard), sold off 99% of my board game collection (that was worse 40 years of effort there!), and had to choose between a dining room table and a desk (and I was going back to school, so ). Fast forward to last month and I was moving to my family home, which meant moving to a much larger space. Every box was unpacked, plus I had quite a few boxes here that had been left in storage dishes, books, and who knew what else? But I learned two things during all this that I want to pass on. Do you ever feel old, worn out, and useless? Or at least past your prime? Do you ever feel you have nothing to contribute, or that no one appreciates you? When I opened one of my boxes that had been left here in storage, I found two old dish cloths. And when I say old dish cloths, I mean old. They had been my grandmother s, and I had not packed them to save them but had used them to help protect some dishes from cracking. But what was I excited to see? Those dish cloths! Memories of growing up. Colors that you just don t see put together anymore (and, I will admit, with reason!). I opened that box and was like, Oh! Sometimes we just want to see something familiar, something comforting, something maybe we had forgotten about. Those dish cloths are past their prime, but they had served well in a new way for which they had not been designed and are now serving well in yet another way as dust cloths. And second While unpacking, I was making a list of things I would need to go buy. Near the top of the list was a set of baking dishes. Well let me just tell you that I am so glad I finished unpacking before going shopping, because one of my boxes contained several corningware dishes! They were here the whole time, but I had forgotten. Several weeks ago, God gave us that sermon on spiritual gifts. Do you ever think that maybe your gift will change over time, that God will use you in a new way that you had never thought of before? It happens! And do you ever get surprised when you think you need to get someone else to do something, but then you find that, maybe even to your great amazement, you find that you have that gift, maybe it was something you enjoyed as a child but forgot all about?

15 Let God surprise you this month. Whatever you may think or believe, God will never finish with you. You are never too old, or too useless, or too whatever in God s eyes. Actually, let s make that in God s heart because God loves you beyond all expectation! And whenever you get overwhelmed with what you think you need, take a long look at what you have. God already knew what you were going to need, and it just may be that you already have it and didn t realize it. Happy July, and spend some time with God and notice how gifted and loved you truly are.
