1 THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH For the week of January 23, 2019 A Note From Your Pastor Dear Friends, As I write this, it is early Tuesday morning. After my phone rang at 5:10am to tell me that school is cancelled, I got ready and came in to the office just in case icy conditions later mean I need to go home early. My children are likely still in bed as I write. It is easy for the first response to days like today to be frustration. Just in our family my mom is deciding weather to postpone my grandma s cataract surgery, I am wondering if I ll be able to make the event I m scheduled to speak at tonight, Jim is wondering about his early morning travel for tomorrow, my children (who had the MLK holiday off yesterday) are ready to get back in their usual routine. It is easy, when things don t go as planned, to get frustrated. But I wonder if we can embrace the gift of time. In Greek there are (at least) two different words used for time. Chronos is how we usually think of time - minutes and hours and days. This time is about scheduling. It is the time by which we measure if we are running late. This time can be important in our daily routine but is also something to which we so easily become enslaved. Kairos, on the other hand, is about an opportune time, it is about taking advantage of the moment you are given, about being present, about not just quantity of time but quality. Winter is a great season to learn to embrace Kairos because whether we like it or not the winter weather sometimes stops us in our tracks and changes our plans. This idea of embracing Kairos is a good discipline for me. This idea of being present and discovering the gifts of the moment, even when my schedule changes...it s not always easy, but it is something I work to embrace. I wonder if you might join me in this endeavor. 2 This Week at First Christian Church January 23, 2019 UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday Bible Study meets at 12:30pm each week. January 23 - I Corinthians 13:1-8a January 30 - Luke 5:1-11 JANUARY BOOK CLUB January s book club selection takes us back 400 years to a Spanish expedition into Florida that went awry. A few explorers pressed on, ending up on the coast of what is now Texas. The book is The Moor's Account by Laila Lalami. We'll discuss it at the McKinstry s, on January 24 at 7 p.m. Please, JANUARY FOOD PANTRY ITEM: Feminine Hygiene Products Food isn t the only thing shared at the Coralville Community Food Pantry. They also provide items for household and personal needs. Sometimes we forget how important having things like feminine hygiene products is, but when people can take care of their hygiene needs they are in a better position to participate fully in other aspects of life. Sunday, January 27 is the last Sunday to collect feminine hygiene products - let s respond generously! The bin is at the back of the sanctuary by the Mission & Witness board. make note: change of location. Children, Youth, and Families February 3: Progressive Dinner Disciples Identity Class Whether you are a long time member of a Disciples church or new to FCC and our denomination, you are invited to a four week class exploring Disciples Identity. This class is underway and meeting on Sundays at 9am through February 3. You are still welcome to join Laura Kittrell, Kara Seaton, and Melea White in Room 114. Pot Luck is Coming: January 27 The last Sunday of the month is almost here and with it our next pot luck. Please plan to bring a dish to share and stay following worship on Sunday for food and fellowship. February 8-10: JYF Retreat in Newton (3rd, 4th and 5th graders), online registration available Save the Date! Vacation Bible School 2019, June 9-13, meal at 5:30, program 6-8pm Questions? 3 This Week at First Christian Church January 23, 2019 WALKING FOR GOOD CAUSES Two opportunities to walk for a good cause are coming in April. You are invited to be part of both: The CROP Walk will take place on Sunday, April 7. Last year First Christian had a good group who walked and we hope to do the same this year for the 50th CROP Walk. Information about signing up and raising money to help fight hunger will be available soon. The funds raised will both be shared with local helping agencies like the Crisis Center Food Pantry and be shared to help people around the world. The NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Walk will take place on Saturday, April 27 at Terry Trueblood with the walk beginning at 10am. Our own Jill Michel is the Faith Chair for this year s walk and hopes we ll have a good group walking for First Christian Church. The funds raised through the NAMI Walk help offer education and support groups for those facing mental illness and their families. To join the FCC team talk to Pastor Jill or click here to register. If you are unable to participate in these walks, you can support other walkers with your donations. RACIAL JUSTICE BOOK DISCUSSION OPPORTUNITY A book discussion on White Fragility: Why it's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin di Angelo is beginning soon. The first meeting will be February 5 (Tuesday) from 7:00 to 8:30 in room D at the Iowa City Public Library. They will probably be covering the first pages. Even if you are not able to join a group to discuss this book, it comes with high recommendations for those interested in racial justice. In a recent interview with Krista Tippett, Claudia Rankine, a black poet, essayist, and playwright spoke of it. She stated that she thought that White Fragility did an excellent job of describing the cultural waters that we all swim in.
