1 This Week at First Christian Church For the week of April 18, 2018 A Note from Your Pastor Friends, I have a challenge for you. Actually, it s a challenge for me, too, and one I am hoping you will take with me. The challenge is this: let s slow down. I am aware that life moves fast, that we live in a time when overscheduling is normal. But even in the midst of those realities we can slow down and pay attention. That s really what I mean when I challenge us to slow down. Be in the moment. Do one thing at a time. Move more slowly and look around. Actually listen to and look at the people you encounter. Put down your devices. Focus your attention. I know that I am guilty of always attempting to fit in one more thing even when time is tight. What if instead I told myself that I had done enough and moved on to the next thing without ending up in a rush? What gifts might I encounter? When I read the stories of Jesus I often think this was what made him different - I believe he had the discipline of slowing down and being present. We have been talking a lot about how our faith calls us to act, how it sends us out into the world. But it also calls us to notice, to be attentive, to be present. In fact, I am certain that the actions we take in the world would be both more meaningful and more effective if we were always paying attention to those we encountered and to the world around us. Will you accept this challenge with me? Hope to see you Sunday! Jill Baby Shower for the Crisis Center Food Pantry Through the month of April we will continue to collect the following baby items: diapers, formula, baby food, and baby wipes. Please bring items to church and place in the identified bin. Let s see how much we can collect to assist families with young children! In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours. Mark Twain

2 This Week at First Christian Church April 18, 2018 UPCOMING EVENTS All Ladies are welcome to join together at Longhorn Steak House on April 19th at 5:30 PM. Wednesday is back. We will meet at 12:30pm each week. April 18 - Genesis 1:1-2:3 April 25 - Acts 10:44-48 Make Sunday School Part of Your Morning! Sunday School classes are offered downstairs for children in kindergarten - 6th grade. A nursery is offered for younger children. 7th graders adults are currently doing a study called The Will of God based on a book by Leslie D. Weatherhead. They meet upstairs in room 114. Youth Sunday is April 22 Join us as the children and youth lead us in worship reminding us of our call to care for all of creation. FCC BOOK CLUB CLIMATE OF HOPE by Michael Bloomberg and Carl Pope will be the topic of discussion at Pat Arnold's home at 7 p.m. April 26th. The authors report on what they believe are practical ways for cities to tackle climate change. Please join us. Children, Youth, and Families April 20-21, Youth Lock-In Come enjoy a night at the church and final Youth Sunday planning. April 22, Youth Sunday in morning worship April 29, Youth Camp Fundraiser Youth will be serving walking tacos in place of the usual monthly pot luck dinner. May 5, Youth to Theatre Cedar Rapids to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat May 6, Families Learning Together Families are invited to share lunch and participate in a hike together after worship. May 20, Youth Group All 3rd 12th graders are invited to stay following worship for a meal and youth group. Questions? Plan to stay after worship for a meal of walking tacos (vegetarian and gluten-free options available), prepared and served by the youth. Free-will donations will be collected, with proceeds going to help with registration fees for our youth who will attend summer camp at the Christian Conference Center in Newton. Feel welcome to bring a dessert to share. going into Pre-K 6th grades will be Sunday, June 10 Thursday, June 14 in the evenings. Watch for more info on registration and volunteer opportunities.

3 This Week at First Christian Church April 18, Work Camp Opportunity The group that included Nancy and John McKinstry who went on a work camp to Nicaragua in March is planning a work camp to Puerto Rico during the first week of March in The camp will stay at a Disciples church camp and be organized through Week of Compassion and will cost no more than $1200-$1500 per person including transportation (flying out of CR) lodging, and food. Anyone interested in going is asked to talk with Nancy or John, who will help interested persons to stay informed as the camp gets organized. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) helps to raise awareness of mental illness and raise funds for their mission to help individuals and families right here in our region. The NAMI Walk is Saturday, April 28 at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area with check in at 9am and the walk at 10am. When you walk with NAMI, you join the movement. To learn more or register, visit: Are You Done With Winter? Are you ready to put your coat away? If you have anything you no longer wear...anything that no longer fits...now is the perfect time to set it aside for the winter clothing drive. This year we will start collecting items in the spring so that you don t have to store them. Bring coats, hats, scarves, gloves, boots, or snow pants on Sundays May 6 and 13 and deposit them in the collection boxes. Please bring only clean items in good working order. And mark your calendars now to volunteer at the Winter Clothing Distribution on October 13. CHRISTIAN SYMBOL PHOENIX According to ancient legend, the phoenix lived for 500 to 1,400 years (depending on the version of the myth), at which time it would set its nest ablaze and be consumed in the flames. After three days the bird would be reborn and was said to repeat this cycle, rising from the ashes again and again.
