3 CLAIRVAUX CHRONICLE Easter Blessings and Wishes to all the wonderful people of St. Bernard s Parish FROM WINTER TO SPRING W e ve had an especially harsh winter with snow storms, floods, strong winds and even property damage. But spring has arrived and in all of nature new life abounds. This rhythm of the seasons mirrors the rhythm of our church life. We have ended the 40 days of prayer, fasting and self-denial, a time of penance and reparation. We now enter the spring time of the resurrection as we celebrate this Easter Sunday. Where death seemed to have the last word and earth held bound the body of Jesus, his resurrection from the dead proclaims that death has been defeated; he is risen from the tomb. Where we may have been held in the grip of sin, we now are among the redeemed. Easter says so much more about the future than the present. Though we look back to the event of Jesus resurrection, even more do we look forward to that moment when we too shall rise from the dead. This is the ultimate gift God gives us. The loss of a loved one over the past year or years gone by makes us ever mindful of how this great truth of our faith is so essential in facing death. It brings us from sorrow and despair to inner peace and hope. On behalf of the entire parish staff may I wish you and your family an Easter full of that very peace and hope. At this joyous season of Easter, let us remember in our prayers all of the men and women serving in our Armed Services, near and far. These people are serving to keep our country and families safe. ELECTRONIC GIVING Next weekend we will introduce a new program for parish support called Faith Direct. It will afford parishioners an easy and convenient way to make their weekly contributions electronically. A number of parishes in the diocese have launched this program, and the response has been positive. During the announcements I will briefly describe the program next Sunday. In today s bulletin there is also a full-page description of Faith Direct on page 7. I encourage you to read this material and consider if this way of contributing to the parish suits you. It is entirely optional but some may find it an easier way to offer financial support. 3

6 GIFTED, ENGAGED, GROWING ST. BERNARD S PASTORAL PLAN Easter Resolutions Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? I DO! Do you believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord...? I DO!! Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting? I DO!!! If you and I answered I DO to these questions at the Easter Vigil or at Easter Sunday Mass, we ve just gone and made some Easter Resolutions. We just re-affirmed the statement of faith and the promises we made at our Baptism, and confirmed at our Confirmation. For most of us, that faith was declared and those promises were made by our parents and godparents. But we have no excuse now we just made the promise ourselves! We Christians need to live out our promises to believe in Jesus and, more importantly, to imitate him, in the context of a Christian community. That s because it s hard to follow him. We need help and support. And that s what St. Bernard s parish and all other church communities are all about: helping and supporting one another in keeping our promises to live as followers of Jesus in the world. Over the last year, our parish has taken some significant steps toward growing in our mission to be a vibrant, supportive community of faith. Based on the input that YOU gave us through parish Listening Sessions and the Gallup Member Engagement Survey, we identified three priorities that our parish has to work on so that the Easter message that Christ is risen in our hearts, our lives and our world can be effectively proclaimed. We are asking every member of our parish to participate in this effort in some way. Many of you already are, and thanks to you, the risen Christ is made more real and present in our parish and our community. You are truly living out your baptismal promises! When each of us was conceived in the womb, God very thoughtfully infused in us gifts and talents in a special, unique combination dreamed up for each of us. Following Jesus (which, remember, we just all promised to do.) means following his example of using his unique talents to announce and to BE God s presence in the world. It means using our gifts and talents to support and sustain the mission of St. Bernard s parish. It means using those gifts and talents to reach out and invite others who are only minimally-connected to us to become more engaged in the life and mission of the parish. And it means expressing our gratitude and appreciation to one another for the time, talent and treasure that we so lovingly give to make St. Bernard s the Gifted, Engaged and Growing community that we know it is! Do you know your God-given talents and use them to assist in the life and mission of the parish? Do you share your enthusiasm for the work of the parish with others and invite them, as Jesus did, to Come and see? Do you make it a point to thank your fellow parishioners for what they do in the parish? What is YOUR Easter Resolution?? Get started with the StrengthsFinder! Diane Vella, Director Adult Faith Formation 6

7 Automated Giving Is Here! Next weekend we will be introducing Faith Direct, an exciting way to support our parish finances. Faith Direct is a highly respected and secure company that is leading the way for parishioners to support their parishes through electronic means. The Faith Direct program gives you a convenient way to support St. Bernard's by electing to use direct debit like most of us do for other payments or charitable giving. It also gives you the opportunity to support our parish even if you are absent from Mass for travel or illness. And, it addresses the situation I know many families face on their way to Mass: Where did I put my envelopes?! With Faith Direct, our parish will gain predictable cash flow that will help us with planning our parish needs and programs. As Christian stewards, it will give you the opportunity to better plan your finances when supporting our church. How does it work? The folks at Faith Direct have made it very simple and will handle the entire process for our parish: (1) You may complete an enrollment form and simply return the form to Faith Direct headquarters, along with a cancelled check if you have selected checking debit or complete credit card information. (2) You may visit and use our specific parish code for secure online enrollment. There is no cost to you as a parishioner to enroll. Following the month in which you are enrolled, Faith Direct will begin debiting your specified account on the 4th of the month (or the next business day) for your offertory gift and/or second collections. You will receive confirmation on your bank or credit card statement, a complete statement for tax planning purposes at the end of the year, "offertory cards" to demonstrate your parish support, and you can set up access to your own individual account online. More information about how to set up your enrollment with Faith Direct will be coming next month. I find Faith Direct a "win-win" for both parishioners and our parish and I plan on enrolling myself. I strongly encourage you to give the program your consideration. I am grateful for your financial and prayerful support of our parish. I am available to answer any questions you might have. In the Lord, Father Jerry 7

8 LITURGY CORNER Edited by Father Chris Costigan April 4, 2010 Easter Sunday: The Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord GOSPEL: As Peter and the beloved disciple peer into the empty tomb, the sparse evidence of folded burial clothes leads the beloved to resurrection faith. Peering into a space that others perceive to be empty and void of meaning or possibility, the beloved perceives new life. As believers, Christians continually peer into places that appear to be empty and void of life and possibility; yet, the Holy Spirit s prompting enables faithful disciples to discern even in the sparsest of evidence wellsprings of hope for new life. Sourcebook 2010 Meditation On Easter Sunday Jesus rose gloriously from the tomb and in doing so He has given us, who believe in Him, an assurance that we, too, will, by His power, rise from the dead. There are people who say that there will be no resurrection, that there is nothing after death. When next you hear this, think of springtime. During the long hard winter, you wonder Will spring ever come this year? The ground was frozen hard and there was not a sign of life in the fields or on the trees. But now everything is changing. Flowers are appearing, the wheat is growing in the fields and leaves are beginning to appear on the trees. No human power can keep back springtime. Since the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead, the first signs of an eternal springtime have begun to appear. Each of us has met Christians who, despite great suffering that cannot be explained, have continued to believe that death is not the end. These people are signs for us that Jesus Christ has really risen. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 220) Scriptures for April 4, April 11, 2010 Sunday, April 4. Easter Sunday. 9 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., Many thanks to everyone who is mindful of the less fortunate members of our Levittown community. Often people will come to the door with food for the pantry, and say that they wish they could do more. While that is surely true, what is most important is not necessarily the quantity of the donation, but the consciousness and good will which prompts someone to reach out in caring! We are so fortunate that such a consciousness has always been the sum and substance of our parishioners lives. And for this, we are always most grateful. As we celebrate this joyous Easter season, we wish everyone God s choicest blessings. Our pantry needs this week include: cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned meat and fish, hearty soups, pasta, jarred tomato sauces and other tomato products, canned and dried beans (Goya-type), rice, potatoes (boxed and canned), canned vegetables (except green beans), macaroni and cheese, canned fruit, dessert mixes (cake, Jell-o, pudding, etc.) Paper products (toilet tissue, tissues, paper towels, napkins) and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) are always welcome, as are laundry and dish soap, since they are taxable and cannot be purchased with food stamps.
