3 CLAIRVAUX CHRONICLE 2010 A YEAR OF GRACE W e have entered a new year, and for some they will be happy to see 2009 come to an end. This is the usual time people make resolutions and try to make improvements in their lives. Unfortunately they rarely come to fruition. Resolution implies change and change is difficult. Most of the time we human beings are set in our ways. In contrast to this, our high-tech culture is constantly changing and at a very rapid pace. New gadgets and fancy electronic gizmos are coming out by the month. Advances in these fields are such that it is impossible to keep up with them. I m typing this column on my desktop computer using a word processing program. When completed I will press a key, and my printer will put out a perfect copy of what I see on my computer screen. (So much for the typewriter and carbon paper.) While technology may be making leaps and bounds, human nature simply cannot change, adapt, or advance that quickly. There are certain timeless elements within ourselves. Perhaps that is why we can sit in church on a given Sunday and listen to readings that are 2000 to 3000 years old. And they still make sense (mostly) and they still speak to our inner spirit, and they still challenge us. And they are even capable of changing us, if only in a small way. We wish each other Happy New Year, not suggesting that 2010 will be the worst year ever but hoping that a new year will be better. From a Christian perspective we see each new year as a year of grace, an endless flow of opportunities to allow God s presence and love to enter our world through ourselves. To the extent that we are in tune with this life of grace, change does take place and the kingdom comes a little closer. Along with the parish staff, I wish all of you peace and happiness in the New Year, one that is filled with God s abundant blessings. 3

Psalm of the Unborn For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full and well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 8 LITURGY CORNER The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2010 Today is the solemnity that celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the nations, the showing forth of the glory of God, a past event, a present reality, and an object of hope. The story of the Magi coming from the East is only reported in Mathew (2:1-12). Mathew s account of the Gospel says nothing of their home country, their status, their religion, their number, or their names. So where did the traditions and folklore originate? Three Magi have prevailed because of the three gifts mentioned, and their names of Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar persist because they appeared in the ninthcentury Italian manuscript. The representation of these Magi as kings comes from the reference in both the First Reading from Isaiah and today s psalm, Psalm 72. This solemnity, which dates to the third century, was the original feast of Jesus in the East, and one of the two dates for the initiation of the catechumens in the early Church. Today is the traditional day for blessing homes and other buildings by marking the lintels of doorways with chalk. The markings commemorate the three Magi. The markings for 2010 are: 20 + C + M + B These letters represent the three initials of the Magi s names written between numbers of the year separated by four crosses. They are also the Latin abbreviation of Christus mansionem benedicat, which means Christ blesses this house. Sourcebook 2010 Edited by Father Chris Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung. The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply, Amen. Leader: Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace. Blessed be God forever. R/. Blessed be God forever. Leader: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ s light and love. Leader: Listen to the words of the holy Gospel according to Luke: The Leader reads from Luke 19: 1-9. Leader: The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him. R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. All recite the Our Father. Leader: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. R/. Amen. It is preferable to end the celebration with a suitable song, for example, O Come, All Ye Faithful or We Three Kings. From Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers 8

9 PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: Once again, we thank you for all of your help with our Christmas Giving Tree. Many families experienced special blessings because of the kindness of our parishioners. On behalf of our many seniors, adults and children, we say a special thank you and assure you of our prayers for the New Year. Special thanks to P.J. Finnegan s who served Christmas dinners to many of our families, and to Santa Lance from Miller s Ale House who delivered gifts to some of our families. Many generous hands and hearts made this a most blessed Christmas season! Because we were so busy with Christmas preparations, our pantry suffered some neglect. If you are able to help, these are the items that are badly needed: hot and cold cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned meat and fish (especially tuna), tomato sauces and products of all kinds, rice, beans (dried and Goya-type canned), dessert mixes and canned fruit, coffee and tea. At the present time, we do not need canned vegetables.) We could also use: toiletries of all kinds, paper towels, toilet tissue, tissues, napkins. Our babies need Pampers and wipes. We encourage all of our eligible families to apply for food stamps, but food stamps cannot be used to purchase taxable items. Therefore our request for toiletries and paper goods. Any and all donations are appreciated. If any group, troop, family or individual would like to help with a food drive, please call our office. We thank Island Harvest for their help from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Shortly, we will give you a report of how many people benefited from your outreach to the community through Parish Social Ministry and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. SOUPER BOWL OF CARING: Our Charitable KIDZ are gearing up for their third annual Souper Bowl event on the weekend of February 6th and 7th. The planning meeting for the KIDZ and other interested folks will be Saturday, January 9th from 10 to 12 noon in the parish center. At this meeting, Sister Diane Morgan will explain what the Dominican Sisters are doing in the (civil) parish of St. Bernard s to help the people of New Orleans rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. It will be an inspiring morning! The KIDZ and friends will be collecting change, bills and checks to benefit St. Bernard s parish, New Orleans, after the masses on Super Bowl weekend. More details will follow. We count on your support! 9
