1 the ANCHOR of the march 2017 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Lent was the early Church s answer to the problem of spiritual laxity. Over time, we tend to relax our commitment to spiritual disciplines, like prayer and reading or meditating on God s Word, the Bible. With the celebration of the greatest of Christian feasts, the Day of Resurrection (Easter) in sight, we begin to prepare ourselves for God to renew and refresh us in His Spirit. Jesus specifically spoke of three disciplines to His disciples: Prayer, fasting and the giving of alms. Probably the most neglected discipline these days is fasting. Fasting from food, fasting from distractions like T.V. or the internet, fasting from common pleasures, are a way of reminding us of our need to receive spiritual nourishment directly from the Lord Jesus. When we fast, we crucify our own desires and are able to focus more intently on God s voice in our hearts. Our minds are renewed and our will strengthened as we seek first the kingdom and His righteousness. We shouldn t pass up the opportunity to go deeper in our relationship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, during Lent. Daily prayer (praise, confession, intercession, supplication, and thanksgiving) helps strengthen our relationship with God. Giving alms for the help of those who are needy or giving for the work of the Gospel is another way of showing our gratitude to God for all the blessings He has given us in His Son, Jesus. Let s begin our Lenten observance with ASH WEDNESDAY, which is next week. The service schedule is: 8:00 a.m. - Parish School Holy Eucharist 10:00 a.m. - Spanish Language Holy Eucharist 12:00 p.m. - Holy Eucharist 5:30 p.m. - Holy Eucharist Lenten Service and Forty Day Cafe The following Wednesdays during Lent we will have a brief service at 12 p.m. followed by the Forty Day Cafe. Our teaching theme this year will be the I AM statements by Jesus. Please join us for worship and a light lunch. New Vestry Members & Wardens As you probably know, Robyn Pelking, Andy Quintana, Richard Roman and Don Ward were elected to three year terms of the vestry last month. The vestry and I also appointed Riley Stevens as Senior Warden and Don Ward as Junior Warden. Please pray for our new vestry members and wardens, that God will guide and protect them in their new roles. Bishop s Visitation A couple of weeks ago Bishop Mark Zimmerman was here visiting Rey de Paz. At the last minute, I also invited him to celebrate at our 8:30 a.m. service because two of our clergy were out sick. Now he will be coming to St. Clement on March 19th for a visitation. This is not his annual official visit, just a periodic one, as he tries to see each congregation a couple of times per year. Pledges We are finding it necessary to watch our finances carefully this year, since our budget has increased. So far, we have received $998,440 in pledges and expected giving for Our budgeted expenses for 2017 are expected to be $1,884,891. If you have not made a financial commitment for this year, please consider doing so. We recently had hail damage to our roofs and it was determined that the shingles on our sanctuary need to be upgraded. That and repairing our Ciudad Nueva buildings will cost $40,000. Thank you for your faithfulness to God. In our Lord Jesus Christ, The Rev. William C. Cobb, D. Min.

A Seder meal is a ceremonial dinner in commemoration of the exodus from Egypt. The Seder is more than just a meal. The word Seder means order. Thus the Seder is a very orderly, structured event complete with a script of readings and prayers, intertwined with songs and actions. There are specific foods prepared in specific ways. Traditionally these are more adult in nature but we are going to make this kid friendly. Please plan to join us for this event. It will be an interactive dinner with a drama, explanations and children participation. It will be a fun and also learning time.
3 GREETINGS FROM THE PARISH SCHOOL Reflection from Grandparents and Special Friends Day Grandparents Day and Special Friends Day is always a very special day for the students and for the visitors! The Lord blesses us with very treasured relationships in our lives. I believe none greater than that of grandparent/grandchild, and/or often someone else that fills that role. We often take these relationships, whether grandparent, or special friend, for granted. I strongly believe that it can be these very valuable relationships that can form who we become and shape us as we mature. My paternal grandfather and I had one such relationship. I credit much of who I am, what I do, and how I live out my faith and beliefs, to my relationship with my grandfather and the role model he was for me. I was fortunate to spend a great deal of time with him during my early childhood and formative years. We would take long walks and just chat. He would ask me questions and share with me, but mostly, he would listen, just listen to whatever I was saying. Never judging, never correcting, just listening. I know, now, he was forming me through the stories he would share and the things he would tell me, but, at the time, I just felt like he heard me, he got me, he understood me. He was an educator, a man of faith, very active in his church, and a role model for me. Cherish and foster the relationships your children have with their grandparents, or that special someone, or the relationship you have with your own grandchildren! That bond can truly shape the person the child grows up to become more than we may ever know. May God continue to bless our grandparents, special friends, and our students! Rick Betts, Head of School Hi friends! February was a great month for our group! We had the opportunity to help set up cots for the Refugee ministry after youth group. The students had a great time grabbing and setting up the YAC for this ministry, some of them were running back and forth between the YAC and the storage unit that the cots were held in. It was pretty funny to watch their enthusiasm. We also were able to take a small team to Austin, Texas to lead a Faith Alive for another youth group. This conference is always incredible because our students have to step up their game and be leaders when they are normally just sitting and listening. Every single student who went on this trip had to prepare a testimony to share in front of the group we were going to. They were awesome! God moved and used those testimonies to impact the lives of the Austin group. This month, we are hosting the annual Spring Break Outreach at our church! We LOVE this ministry and it is always beneficial for our students who attend. We are able to learn about God in a more concrete way and in new ways as well. The cost of the trip is $100 per student and is open to anyone 12 years old and up (12th-17th of March). We want every single student to be there! If the cost of the trip is the only thing hindering your student s attendance, please talk to Kristie Shinn ( ) about a scholarship. Money is not a reason to not come! We would appreciate prayers for this trip, for God to move and encounter every single person who attends this event. Blessings, Youth Ministry Team For any questions or concerns, contact Kristina Shinn at: (443) or kjshinn@gmail.com MARCH THE ANCHOR-PAGE 3

5 SMALL DEEDS GO A LOOOONG WAY! Oh yeah, we can do that! The children in the Wonder Room on Wednesday mornings assured me they could draw and color pictures of something that we could in turn make into felt creatures and give to boys and girls of refugee families. The thought came to me after hearing the report of the first intake of families escaping the difficult situations in their home countries and coming across the border for refuge. When you are traveling by foot and bus for long distances with limited personal property, toys or something tangible just to love on is farthest from your mind. The involvement of St. Clements to help with needed showers, clothing and a place to rest, didn t just need to be by the adults but our children could learn about giving as well. Why not have our boys and girls design the dolls then put into the hands of other children who still have a long journey ahead of them and may need a little something to hold on to. Each of the felt creations has a heart and the child designer s name on it to show their love to the recipient. Children in the Wednesday night child care and Saturday evening service children s class also got involved. One mom helped me sewing up as well! If you would like to get involved, I have lots of children s designs yet to be made up into felt creatures before next time the refugee families come. Serving Jesus with the children, Teresa Oduor. Hey, everyone! Don t forget to come to the library for your Lenten devotional or a great book to study. In addition, pick up a novel or a biography to read during our chilly evenings. We can t wait to get our books, movies, and study kits off of the shelves and into your hands. on our border. March is bringing many fun things our way. 1. We are hosting the Border Southwest CCDA Gathering. We will be discussing border issues and take a look at what people are doing to help 2. Our kids love Kings Kids Spring break outreach. So we are gearing up for a great week of games, crafts, bible stories and more! February has kept us busy. We had a lot of fun with our kids. This month we had A visit from an old border fellow Minute-to-win it games Ice cream sundae parties New middle school classes Great weather to play outside We also have continued to work on our immigration clinic. We are hoping to be accredited soon! Our food co-op is off to a great start. We have many excited families and the extra food has been a huge blessing to many. We look forward to another great month ahead! MARCH THE ANCHOR-PAGE 5
