1 the ANCHOR of the augustissue 8- vol 17 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We are very blessed to have Rebecca Guerin, Rachel Degenhart, Robyn Pelking, and all those who helped with Vacation Bible School (VBS) this year. The theme was Fire Starters and we pray that fire of the Holy Spirit was kindled in the hearts of the children who attended! Holy Chow! The Bible says that the first disciples met in the temple and house to house (Acts 20:20), and broke bread together (Acts 2:42). This Saturday, July 29th at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Holy Chow Potluck at Trey and Patsy Burdick s home on 5305 Corey Dr. Please join us and bring a dish to feed eight people. Welcome Back! On Sunday, August 20th, we will have our Back to School Blessing, followed by a picnic on the school pavilion after the 10:45 service. At both services, we will pray over all teachers and students. The menu will be hamburgers and hotdogs. We will have sign-up sheets in the welcome center for salads, sides and desserts. This will be a great opportunity for fellowship and gathering together as school begins, so please plan to join your church family for lunch. Power and Love Conference Harvest Christian Center will be hosting 2017 El Paso Power and Love August 2-5. This three day school is sponsored by about twenty churches and ministries in El Paso. You can register at powerandlove.org and scroll down to find the El Paso Conference. Information about financial assistance for those who cannot afford the conference fee is located on the page that says, Register Now. Altar Guild The Altar Guild needs you! Janet Newsom has come forward as a new Altar Guild Director. I would like to thank Karen Stephens for volunteering to fill the position a year and a half ago. If you are able to help with the Altar Guild, please contact Janet Newsom at (915) The Plan for the Fall When Jesus called his apostles to follow Him, they became the first Christian small group, and are a model for Christians for all time. We believe that small groups are necessary for us grow as disciples of Jesus. It is in small groups that we learn to support, encourage and live as followers of Jesus. Therefore, Rick, Travis and I have decided that this fall, we are going to emphasize being a part of a small group: Anchor s, Bible Studies and Life s (see Travis article). We are not going to have a large group teaching series because we don t want to take away from this goal, however, we plan to continue to have monthly Holy Chow gatherings for fellowship. We will continue to offer a class for Baptismal/ Confirmation/Reception instruction, or anyone who would like to learn more about the history, theology, worship, and governance of the Anglican Church in general and St. Clement s in particular. Please let us know if YOU would like to be part of a small groups this fall, or you would like to start one. In our Lord Jesus Christ, The Rev. William C. Cobb, D. Min.
2 The Church of St. Clement is blessed with many ministries that continue to bear fruit for the kingdom, thank you for allowing us to serve the local community and beyond! Here are a few updates from the St. Clement Ministries: Children s Ministry Out this month to join all the many hands that are helping with Vacation Bible School! What an exciting time we are having seeking and anticipating encounters with God. Day 1, we discover who God is. Before we can find out more of what our identity is, we have to know who God is. We will represent our view of God to the people around us, so we need to make sure our view of God is correct. Knowing who God is, is the first step in knowing our identity. God is in a good mood. Day 2, we discover our true identities. We are His children. He calls us His friends. Day 3, we learn to walk in the truth of who God made me to be. Day 4, learning I am a new creature. How to become who He says I am instead of who I think I am. Day 5, learning to live in Power and the Power of conversation with God. (What we spend time focusing on is what we will become like. God s presence is in us, and the more we spend time with Him the more we become like Him. He wants us to let His presence out of us for the entire world to see. When we let His presence out, the world gets changed, because people get healed, loved, saved from bad things, etc. God s presence is like a light. We shine so everyone can see Him.) Lessons by Rachel Degenhart. I want to thank everybody who volunteered and worked tirelessly for VBS, we had a blast and could not have done it without you!!!! 3 August is always an exciting month in the life of any school. August marks the beginning of a new academic year, a fresh start for everyone. There are not many organizations or institutions that get the opportunity for an annual fresh start, a new beginning for everyone in the organization. Schools do! New classes, new classmates. New teachers, new schedules. New clothes, new uniforms. New school supplies, and new friends. Those of us in schools are truly blessed! It is going to be a great new year! Speaking of new: St. Clement s Parish School has some new and exciting enhancements! Among them a new Early Childhood Motor Activity Center in the gym, including a little people-sized climbing wall. When school opens, the playground will have a new look with new artificial turf, basketball court, and permanent Volleyball net! For the classrooms we have added new touchscreen boards in the Lower School and we have brand new ipads for all-grades to use, enhancing our instructional technology capacity. Exciting times! God continues to bless the school and its students. Upcoming important dates for the month of August at the school are such things as: August 9 Faculty and Staff return for in-service training and planning August 17 FIRST day of school! August 20 Back-to-School Sunday August 24 8th Grade Outdoor Education Trip to Colorado Rick Betts Head of School St. Clement s Parish School visit our website: stclements.org! Summer is flying by quickly. Our kids have had a wonderful time at camp. They have come back excited, exhausted, confident and with new and stronger relationships. We are thankful for every person that has helped send our kids to camp this summer. It has been money well spent and added some great memories and stories to our kids lives. Something that I want to remember and that I learned at camp would be that God is always there with you and that you aren t alone even if it feels like it. He has a plan for everyone and sometimes it takes time for His plan it happen, we just have to be patient and have faith in Him. - high school Ascend camper What I like most is being and making new best friends. I learned how to tell Jesus to talk to us, I felt hope, and happiness because I did all activities and met new best friends. 5th grade Bonita Park camper I liked the swing, and club time, and food; and camp is a place where you can relax, reflect, and get closer to God - middle school Wyldlife camper AUGUST THE ANCHOR-PAGE 3 We are also busy gearing up for the fall so if you are looking to get involved we have many opportunities available. - Mentor 3rd-5th graders on Tuesdays and Thursdaysat Launch Pad from 3:30-5:30 - Van drivers Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:00-3:30 - Middle school Creative Art Class teachers on Tuesdays - sports, computers, cooking, art, sewing or whatever your skill or talent might be! 4:30-5:30pm - Food Co-op van driver on Wednesday afternoons My favourite part about the Catalyst trip was seeing all of my college options. I didn t really know if I would be able to go to college, but going on this trip I ve seen that it ll be a hard journey, but I know it s doable. I also got to know the leaders a lot better, which was really cool! We got to talk about everything, I got prayed over, and it was really good for me. I now know that college is an option for me! 4 On May 8, 2017 the English Speaking Center celebrated the end of year with a ceremony in McKee Chapel and a party in the garden. Over 70 students participated though out the year in our program which places a great emphasis on conversational English. Our students come from all walks of life and throughout our border community. On Mondays we meet in the sanctuary for a short devotional. We appreciate the dedicated support from our volunteer teachers: Janet Newsom, Ninfa Dixon, Phillip Youngblood, Barbara Clawson, Abby Laymon, David Garcia, Gloria Ambler, Jan Macatee and our substitute teacher, Tom Beeman. The Revernd Bill Cobb lends his support consistently and Father Rick Milliorn provides music and guidance for our devotionals as does our Deacon Ken Hanna. Our registration for next year s classes is scheduled for August 30 and our classes will begin on September 6. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information on our program please contact me. We always need volunteers!! We need three teachers for next school year. Thank you all for your continued support. Eddie Endlich, Director Sent to be Scent, by Rev. Travis King+ How do you smell? We have all been there. You forgot to put on your deodorant that morning. Of course it is a typical, El Paso, day in July sunny with a chance of scorching inferno. While meeting friends for lunch, you are greeted with a hug and reality sets in your arms rise for the embrace and a pungent perfume is liberated. It s not a question we often ask, but maybe we should. How do I smell? 2 Corinthians 2:15-17 (ESV), reads: For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ. We have been commissioned by God to be the aroma of Christ, or I guess you could say we have been sent to be Scent! We cannot be peddlers of God s Word, but rather paddlers of the Word. Men and women willing to navigate through the Living Waters of Scripture, to quench our thirst and find the true lives we have been created for in Christ Jesus. As we immerse ourselves in the Living Waters, may many others be drawn to join us there. I fully believe that a bunch of followers of Christ can really reek up a room; in a good way! If we are men and women of sincerity, commissioned by God, speaking in Christ, people should sense the sweet aromatics of God s Love. For this reason, the Youngish Adults Ministry will be kicking off three Life s this fall. The purpose is to be in community, studying the Gospel, and serving in mission. Hence, Life s. It is more than fellowship. It is more than studying the Bible and worship. It is more than a service project. It is an intentional effort to do life together outside our church walls. AUGUST THE ANCHOR-PAGE 4 ENGLISH SPEAKING CENTER We desire these groups to attract a potpourri of people. No matter where someone is on their spiritual journey, they are invited to be part of something exciting, where they can grow in community and grow with Jesus. The three groups will allow intimacy in friendships to develop, along with giving ample time for personal prayers and group needs. Monthly, the three groups will combine for a fellowship event or mission opportunity. Currently, we have fifteen Life leaders training for the fall! My prayer is that as more and more leaders rise to be The Aroma, their fragrance will not falter! May God continue to empower, through the Holy Spirit, those sent to be scent! And may those who are drawn to the groups find a quenching of their thirst, seeds of faith planted, and nourishment for growth to one day become oaks of Righteousness. We have two large group gatherings over the summer to get people excited about what we are doing in the fall. We had our first gathering in our home on July 14 with fifty in attendance! Our next gathering is Friday, August 11, and then we will roll out these new Life s in the beginning of September! Please contact me if you are interested in joining a group, and may you all keep this ministry lifted in prayer. And in the future, ask how things are going just ask, Travis, how does it smell?
5 YOUTH GROUP NEWS Hello St. Clement! This summer has been amazing! God has moved heavily and we cannot wait to see how He continues to move throughout this upcoming school year. This summer we had three out of town trips that we went on. First, we went to Sacramento, New Mexico for the South West Diocesan Conference. At this conference we talked about renewal with the students and discussed what exactly it was and how we could receive renewal from the Lord. On our last night, we talked about things that could be hindering the Lord from renewing our souls and it resonated with multiple students. During ministry time, we had students come up to our leaders and confess things that were keeping renewal from happening in their lives, a lot of kids also asked for accountability during this time to help with what they were struggling with. It was incredible! Our second trip was a two for one deal. We first attended the Provincial Youth Gathering in Wheaton and afterwards went on an outreach into Chicago with the youth from the gathering. During the conference we had a prayer and healing night with the adults and it was fantastic. Our leaders were able to pray for our students to receive healing from deep wounds, the Holy Spirit came and revealed truth and we were able to encourage the hearts of those who were with us. This conference portion was the high light and favorite part of the trips we had with the kids. After the conference, we went on outreach into the city of Chicago. This gave our students an opportunity to really serve the people around them. We were constantly doing things and it was incredibly exhausting, however, we were able to see our students rise above their exhaustion and to represent Jesus in the community of Chicago. The summer isn t over quite yet! We have two more events left and needless to say, they are going to be awesome. Our youth group will be attending the Power and Love Conference, August 2nd-5th. We will meet at the church it will be held every day and the kids will need to bring either a sack meals or money for lunch and dinner. This conference is going to be amazing, so please come! Our last event to end out summer will be our annual Rush Week! This will be a week in which we do fun activities like go to Roswell, go bowling, have a lock-in and throw snowballs at each other in August. This week will be August 16th-20th. We will end with Youth Sunday, a Sunday that our students get to lead the service! We get the control! We are so pumped to see what God is going to do this year! Have any questions? Contact our Youth Ministry Director, Kristie Cossel at (443) Blessings, Youth Ministry Team AUGUST THE ANCHOR-PAGE 5
