The ANCHOR of the Issue #12 December, 2014 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We have just returned from our annual Men of Christ Retreat, and as has been the case in previous years, it was a smashing success! God blessed all sixty men as we heard testimonies and teachings based on the book, The Prodigal God, by Tim Keller. It was a powerful time of fellowship, fun, and of course, good food and beautiful surroundings. Many thanks to Andy Quintana, Bruce Bradford, and the many others who presented talks, coordinated games, etc. Our Saturday afternoon group games were renamed The Gilbert Games, in honor of our brother, Bob Gilbert, who is on his way back to El Paso after having undergone surgery and rehabilitation in Chattanooga, TN, for the last couple of months. Welcome back, Bob and Risher! We have missed you! The Rev. Travis W. King Accepts Call Fr. Travis and his wife Kelly will be moving to El Paso from Montgomery, AL, to accept the call to be an associate priest at the Church of St. Clement beginning on January 1. We are extremely excited to have Travis join our clergy staff. There will be plenty of opportunities to get to know them after the first of the year. Christmas Lessons and Carols On Sunday, December 7 th, at 8:30 a.m., we will be having a Christmas Lessons and Carols Service. Please join us for hymns and special music for the Christmas season. End of Year Giving Every year we depend on additional giving to the Church to meet the needs of our church operations and the many missions and ministries we support. 10:30 am Some seem to have started coming to the 8:30 service. I m not sure if this is due to the time we are starting or getting out, or if it has to do with other actors. Do you have any feedback about the new time? Although the service has been getting out as late as 12:15 pm, it is my goal to have two stations for Holy Communion at this service, which should allow us to finish closer to noon. Christmas Eve Services Our Christmas Eve Services will be held on Wednesday, December 24 th at: 5:00 p.m. Family Service with Pageant and music with the Praise Band 7:30 and 10 p.m. Traditional Christmas Eve Holy Communion with Choir Please note that we do NOT have a Christmas Day service. The church office will be closed the week of December 25 th through January 2nd. Please call one of the clergy directly in case of emergency. There will not be a Saturday service on the 27 th. Annual Meeting In Early January We have moved our annual meeting up to January 11 th. This is because we have a special vestry retreat scheduled for January with Canon Phil Ashey, CEO of the American Anglican Council. In 2015, we will be embarking on a visioning process that will involve the entire church. Yours in our Lord Jesus, Please remember that: 1) our website does take credit and debit cards, for those of you who prefer to give that way; and 2) a donation must be postmarked by December 31 st to be counted as a 2014 donation. The Rev. William Cox Cobb, D.Min. Service Time Feedback Our attendance at the 10:45 a.m. service has dropped off since we moved the service back 15 minutes from

Rachel Degenhart, Children s Ministry Director The best thing you can do for your child is. Who is this Jesus of Nazareth this Nazarene carpenter in whose name vast theological systems have been developed, worldwide churches organized, crusades, reforms, and renewals launched. But what about you? He asked. Who do you say I am?.describe the Christ that you have personally encountered on the grounds of your own self. Describe Him as you would to a friend over coffee. Describe not the deity you have heard about or been taught to believe exists, but only the Christ you have actually encountered. And then, I invite you to reflect soberly on what your own answer reveals to you.who is the God of your imagination really? Is He the invisible honorary president of outer space.the policeman who bats you over the head with his nightstick every time you stumble and fall.all changes in the quality of a Christian s life grow out of a change in one s vision of reality. Jesus said, You will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).Your Father God.loves you beyond fidelity and infidelity, beyond worthiness and unworthiness.he loves you equally in your state of grace and in your state of disgrace. He loves you without caution, regret, boundary, limit, breaking point. No matter what happens or what you do He can t stop loving you! (Taken from The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning, pp ) May a deeper understanding of this reality fill your heart with wonder, excitement and joy as you ponder these truths this Christmas season and may they spill over into your family and may you be blessed. You are invited to participate in our Christmas Eve Pageant. Practice to be each Saturday in December from 9:30-11:30 am Contact Rachel at or Rachel@stclements.com Great opportunity to buy gifts for others!!! Come browse the Christmas tree in the Welcome Center and pick a card or two to buy gifts for children on both sides of the border. Toys as well as essentials and even household items are needed. Rancho Los Amigos, Ciudad Nueva, Life Challenge Intl. are the ministries that we love to bless! Come be blessed by blessing another. December 2014 THE ANCHOR PAGE 2

WELCOME TRAVIS AND KELLY! An ordained Anglican priest under the Anglican Church in North America, Reverend Travis King s story of God s call upon his life has been a journey he never would have imagined! After graduating with honors from DePauw University majoring in Computer Science, he felt the Lord calling him into the ministry as a speaker and chalk artist. Ironically, Travis feared public speaking and also received a B- in the only drawing class he ever enrolled in academically. Travis traveled nationally and internationally, averaging over 150 performances a year, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Over time, it became clear to Travis that the Lord was guiding him more and more toward full-time vocational ministry, with a focus on shepherding and discipleship. He began ministering at Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas as the Assistant College Minister. This became a stepping stone into the Anglican tradition at Christ Church in Plano, Texas where he served three years under the Rev. Canon David Roseberry as the Director of High School Ministries. In the fall of 2006, Travis was burdened with the desire to attend seminary and the possible future of the Priesthood. Shortly thereafter, a Call was issued to Travis to serve as Director of Student Ministry at Christchurch in Montgomery, Alabama. This also provided Travis with the opportunity to attend Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama where he received his Master of Divinity degree in Through the discernment of the leadership of Christchurch and Sebei Diocese, he was ordained into the Diaconate in Kapchorwa, Uganda in July, Just over a year later, Travis was ordained into the Holy Orders of Priesthood under the hands of Bishop Neil Lebhar of the Gulf Atlantic Diocese on January 30, Travis currently serves as Assistant to the Rector, with his main responsibilities including: Youth Ministry, The Gig (Christchurch s mission team serving the local community with monthly outreach projects), and preaching and celebrating monthly at Christchurch. In addition, Travis serves as lead priest at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Auburn, AL, where he preaches and celebrates twice monthly and provides weekly pastoral care and Bible Study. Rev. King is a self-proclaimed foodie and loves to cook, snowboard, and take daily adventures. Travis was married in January, 2014, to Kelly Talbot. Together, they have a passion to see lives changed by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit through preaching of the Word, administration of the Sacraments, and relational ministry. Travis and Kelly are overjoyed at joining the work of the Holy Spirit happening at the Church of St. Clement. Already, they have been blessed by all of the wonderful people who radiated the love and joy of Christ Jesus. It is so evident that the Lord is moving in St. Clements. We are excited to become part of all the Kingdom-work He has planned! And (not so) secretly, Travis is looking forward to an entire new selection of hot sauces! WOMEN S RETREAT February 6-8, 2015 The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer is the book providing the springboard for the talks and activities at the Sisters in Christ retreat scheduled for February 6, 7 & 8 at Holy Cross Retreat Center near Las Cruces. The author wrote this little book to encourage a mighty longing after God. He reminds us that the impulse to pursue God originates with God, but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him. Pastor Tozer knew God intimately knew Him as a person who thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires and suffers as any other person may. The book is like a glimpse through the curtain of the Holy of Holies into the heart of God and His longing for us to know Him. Whether your heart is dry and thirsty, or content and satisfied, if you pick up this little treasure, God can use it to woo you an even deeper, richer encounter with Him. Several copies are available in the parish library. December 2014 THE ANCHOR PAGE 3

But Christ was faithful as a Son over His house whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. Hebrews 3:6 Did you know that 144 years ago in a dusty western outpost, St. Clement s was established as the first Protestant church in territory that reached from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Brownsville, Texas, and out through Arizona? Have you wondered how we grew from an insignificant group of Easterners meeting in crude adobe building into one of the most dynamic Anglican churches in the country today? Did you know that God has drawn diverse people from all over the world, from different denominations, with extraordinary spiritual giftings, and with a single purpose - to build His church along the border? Have you ever read the powerful testimonies of many of our members who came into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ? There are over sixty personal testimonies included in this book. The history of St. Clement s Church chronicles the sacred movement of God through generations of people ministers, lay people, civic leaders, humble workers, writers, musicians who have powerfully experienced His presence. Everyone who wants to learn where we have been as a Body of Believers in order to discern where God is taking us will appreciate Whose House We Are. On sale at a discounted price of $30.00 May be purchased at the church or contact Melanie Wayne at or melwayne@elp.rr.com [Amazon or Barnes & Nobles $37.05 or ebook $3.99] ADVENT LESSONS AND CAROLS The traditional service of Advent Lessons and Carols will be presented at the 8:30am service on Sunday, Dec. 7th. This service, originating in England, portrays the prophesy and anticipation of the coming of our Lord. Music includes hymns, carols and anthems composed by Palestrina, Bach, Manz, Biery and others. Our Adult Choir, soloist, instrumentalists and lay readers will be participants. Lysa Farah, lay reader coordinator and Rick Garven, organist-choirmaster, as well as Fr. Cobb as cantor will be worship leaders. Come and experience the music and scriptures which make Advent meaningful. CHRISTMAS ORGAN AND BRASS CONCERT The El Paso Brass (including our own Kenny Capshaw and Sam Trimble) and St. Clement organist, Rick Garven, will be presenting a Christmas Music Concert on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 7pm, in the Main Church. There will be music, both sacred and secular, performed. Carols and other Christmas holiday favorites will be heard. There is no charge but a freewill offering will be taken. Come and enjoy the superb artistry of these five musicians. December 2014 THE ANCHOR PAGE 4

We believe that when you donate to our Christmas store, you give both a physical gift and the gift of dignity. This year we are again providing a store for our families to shop for Christmas gifts on December 16 th and 17 th. All the gifts will be priced 50-80% off retail. We are asking people to donate unwrapped gifts to the store by December 14, Thank you for supporting this wonderful opportunity for our Ciudad Nueva families. Gifts maybe dropped off at 528 Yandell and St. Clement s Welcome Center. If you have any questions or would like a list of suggested items please contact: Jen at jen@ciudadnueva.org or or Marianne at admin@ciudadnueva.org or Fall Festival was another wonderful success! Thank you so much!! End-Of-Year Giving Please take some time to pray and consider donating financially to Ciudad Nueva. We re trying to meet our end-of-year giving goal of $35,000.
