1 THE ANCHOR OF THE october Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It is wonderful to see so many people coming for our fall teaching series! The two courses that we are offering on Wednesday evenings both have to do with the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, many Christians do not understand the Person and Role of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who lives in the hearts of those who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and it is the Spirit who brings the Presence of the Father and the Son (Jesus) into our lives. It is the Spirit who binds us together in the love of God, in the Body of Christ, the Church. It is the Spirit who inspires and empowers us to be ambassadors of the Kingdom of God in our daily lives. We have had significant outpourings of the Holy Spirit here at the Church of St. Clement in the past, and we are praying for God to give us a new, fresh anointing. There is nothing that we as individual Christians, and the Church needs more than to be filled with and empowered by the Holy Spirit! Parish Picnic On Sunday, October 11th, we will be having a parish picnic at the Parish School Pavilion. The theme is Fall Back to the 50 s. Please plan on joining us for lots of fun and fellowship. Men of Christ Events Our monthly Men of Christ dinner will be on Thursday, October 15th, at the home of Bob Gilbert, 615 E. Hague. Our annual Men s Retreat will be held November at Sacramento Assembly. The theme this year is the Fatherhood of God. Healing On Sunday, October 18th, we will be having healing services at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Please begin to pray that God will pour out His healing grace upon us as we seek Him for physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Operation Christmas Child This year we are participating in the Samaritan s Purse (Franklin Graham s ministry) Operation Christmas Child, which provides small presents and gospel literature to children around the world. All Saints Day Confirmation and Reception On November 1, we will be have Confirmations and Receptions at the 10:45 a.m. Holy Eucharist. Bishop Mark and his wife, Cindy, will be with us. Visioning Process The next stage of our visioning process is to conduct a parish survey. I am hoping that we will be able to conduct the survey in the month of October. The purpose of the survey is to allow members of our church to give feedback regarding various aspects of the Church and its ministry. Financial Update As we move into the fall, it is that time of year in which we attempt to make up the slump in giving that seems inevitable each summer. So far, we are on track for this time of year.meaning that year to date expenses are quite a bit more than revenues, about $150,000. Since we are a Church, we rely completely upon God and His people to provide every penny of our budget. Every contributor is important. Every gift, no matter how small, is important. Please continue to support all our ministries so that we may end the year in the black. If you are not currently giving to God, and His kingdom work through this Church, please ask God what He would have you to do. If you are already giving, we thank God on your behalf! In our Lord Jesus Christ, The Rev. William C. Cobb, D. Min.

2 COME ENJOY THE FELLOWSHIP AND GREAT FOOD! FOR MORE INFO : ldoughtie@aol.com OR STOP BY THE WELCOME CENTER PLANNING FOR THAT DAY by Rick Garven On the television, you can observe advertisements for preplanning your funeral arrangements. With a few of our elderly parishioners entering into Heaven recently, it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to revive a practice that we had here at St. Clement s years ago. That practice was to preplan your memorial service ahead of time so as to relieve your loved ones of the burden of having to plan your service when you pass on, unsure of your wishes. Details would include which of the liturgies you might desire: the Rite One service (traditional language) found in the Book of Common Prayer 1979 on page 469 or the Rite Two service (contemporary language) on page 491. Some parishioners still find the burial service in the 1928 Prayerbook comforting. Also, you can choose whether or not to have Holy Communion. Scriptures could be chosen ahead as well. Certainly, the suggested lessons given on pages 470 or 494 give excellent suggestions. However, there may be other favorite scriptures that could be included. Music chosen is very important part of the service. Using favorite traditional hymns from the Hymnal 1982 or contemporary praise songs are ways to personalize a Celebration of Life. Soloists, whether vocal or instrumental, are another way of enhancing the service. It is somewhat difficult to select certain priests or participants for the service as those people can either be deceased or have moved away or are not able to attend. Suggestions might be made, but it may not be practical for those people to serve in that capacity. All of this information may either be delivered as a hard copy (paper) to the church or via . Irene Taylor is the clergy secretary and handles all of the details of a funeral service including the bulletin or order of service. Please send to Irene in care of the church: Irene@stclements.com or Irene Taylor, Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell St., El Paso, TX This information will filed here at the church, and when that day comes, it will be referred to and used to plan your Celebration of Life service. Just as a will or a trust can be changed, the information may be updated at any time. It has been my privilege to be a part of many Celebration of Life services here at St. Clement s, and any way that I can be of service, please do not hesitate to call me at or me at Rogarven@sbcglobal. net. 3 Tarahumara Blanket fund With the coming of extremely cold weather in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico, the Tarahumara Indians are suffering due to the lack of food and warmth. The cartel has held them in their grip with forced labor and random murders. Your $15 donation could bring the warmth of a new blanket to these destitute people throughout the coming harsh winter. We are presently blessed through Christian channels of the Flames of Love to pass blankets across the border in order to reach these very poor people to suffer less. It is a small amount to warm a soul! Please make checks out to St. Clement attention: blanket fund, the mission board. This donation is tax deductible. 4 CHILDREN S CORNER Rachel Degenhart, Children s Ministry Director Last month I wrote, We have an identity..(that) was born in the mind of God when he fashioned you in your mother s womb.it makes sense then that satan will target this in hopes that we would not accomplish the purposes of God. This month I would like to target a weapon God has given us to be able to live above the identity theft attacks of the enemy: knowing your identity. Genesis tells us we were made in God s image. Romans 3:23 tells us that when we sinned we fell from this glory. Although we became darkness, Ephesians 5:8 tells us the rest of the story, that we now ARE light. Romans 7:13 tells us that Jesus BECAME sin that we might BECOME the righteousness of God. According to Romans 8:29 we were predestined to be conformed into the image of Jesus. In I John 3:2 we learn, when he appears we SHALL be like him, for we shall see him as he is. When we see who He is, we will know fully who we ARE. Why? Because we ARE like him. I John 4:17 says, as He IS, so also ARE we in this world. We were created in his image and when we became dead (see Genesis 1-3) the power that raised Jesus from the dead was able to take our dead form and make us into a new creation, alive, light, child of God, royal priesthood a holy nation. So, what are we to do until we see him? We hear it said that seeing is believing but Hebrews 11 tells us that believing is seeing, that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. In other words, faith allows us to see what we can t yet see. And, how do we get faith? Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Let me put this together. What we are looking at, what we see in the imagination of our mind, what we dwell on, IS what we become. Do you dwell on what the Bible says about you? Do you truly believe that God s thoughts of you outnumber the sands on the sea shore (Psalm 139:18)? Do you ever doubt that you ARE the righteousness of God? Do you question that your life is hidden in Christ (Col 3:3)? The more we see him as he REALLY is, the more we can be conformed into his image now. 2 Cor 3:18 puts it this way, And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. So, what do YOU meditate on? How do you SEE YOURSELF? October s Sunday Lessons Kid s Connection Wonder Room 4 Jesus, the Way, Truth, Life 4 God is so Kind 11 Jesus, the LIVING WORD 11 God is my Abba Daddy 18 Jesus in Baptism 18 God is Faithful 25 God, the Holy Spirit 25 God is Everlasting FOR MORE INFORMATION: Deborah Burt or Rachel Degenhart August THE ANCHOR-PAGE 4 Operation Christmas Child, the unique international project of Samaritan s Purse, has delivered more than 85 million giftfilled shoe boxes to needy boys and girls in 138 countries worldwide since These simple gifts demonstrate God s love to children in a tangible way and provide volunteer national leadership teams, local churches, and ministry partners with the opportunity to share the Good News of Christ. We re excited to partner with Samaritan s Purse in sending Christmas Gifts to children all over the world. Pick up your shoebox and other resources this Sunday and begin your labor of love. Also begin praying specifically for the child who will receive your gift. Pray for them to receive the greatest Christmas gift ever given - the Lord Jesus as their personal Savior.

5 MISSIONARY UPDATE You and St. Clements Church has been supporting Life Challenge International for a number of years. Tim Gamwell, their Director, has close ties to our church. His sister is Rachel Degenhart and Jen and David Kaufmann met while on staff with Tim. Please take a moment to read what Life Challenge is doing in service to the Lord. If you have any questions or would like to help, please give Tim a call. You are always invited to have lunch the first Monday of each month with many of the local missionaries that serve the El Paso/ Juarez area. Thank you again for your faithful support of God s work through your financial support and prayers. She was only nine years old, from Guatemala, begging on the streets of Juarez, Mex. When I asked her how she got there, Graciela replied, in the big truck with all the little girls. It was then that I realized that Graciela and her friend were both beggars only during the day but child prostitutes at night and drug addicts so they would never run away. My heart was broken as I considered the lost and the evil in this world that has become rampant, Everyone doing what seems right in their own eyes and yet the heart of Jesus continues to cry out for these hurting and lost souls. Life Challenge International is a ministry, which shares the passion of Christ and is committed to the effort of reaching these children for Jesus. Also, LCI has always strived to work and collaborate with other ministries and churches in an effort to build and unify the Kingdom of God. If you share the same passions, please visit us or join us in any of our many ministries or outreach efforts. These are some of the opportunities available. You can: - Assist the girls at Hogar de Gracia, our home for trafficked victims. - Participate in our Street crusades every week end with music, dramas, testimonies and more. The more than 200 outreaches a year here on the border. - Help with the Free Health and Medical clinics during the week and weekends. - Join Soccer practice three times a week with any of the teams in our soccer league and assist with the tournaments with our YFC partners. - Join our Missionary training and missions trips in Mexico and in the US. - Visit the children s home, there are now has over 95 children ranging from 18 months to 20 years old. - Come visit us at our Farm in Fabens Tx., where LCI provides Missionary training and also a home and programs for girls and women in transition. The farm houses chickens and goats, fields of wheat and barley and alternative eco growing systems, which can assist indigenous people groups in becoming self sustainable. As you can see there is much work to do, many opportunities to serve and constant needs. My challenge to you, is to seek the Lord in knowing his will and make a commitment to fulfill His purpose in your life. In Matt. 7:21, Jesus said, Only those who do the will of my Father in Heaven, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Consider what that means and let the light of Christ shine through you. You are the light of the world. So let your light shine. And give glory to your Father in Heaven. Next semester, participants will be placed in an internship and be mentored directly by an employer. Our hope is to empower High School students to move toward a successful future! Family Resource Center Ciudad Nueva is currently in the process of developing a Family Resource Center. The center will be a way for us to walk alongside families in a greater capacity, connecting them with resources, training and appropriate referrals. We know that when individuals and families flourish, the whole community flourishes! BAM: Business as Missions On September 19th we had 16 local business owners and leaders come together with Rudy Carrasco (U.S. Regional Facilitator at Partners Worldwide) to discuss how to make a difference in the Kingdom using their skills, talents and gifts as business people. It was a great first meeting and they are looking forward to getting together more to see how they can make a difference! Daughters of the Holy Cross 1 John 3:2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. In order to explain why I love being a Daughter of the Holy Cross I must first confess a secret: I love meetings. It all began when I was little. Not being a running-around sort of kid, my idea of fun was to coerce my little friends to sit around a table and pretend we were having a meeting. We made notations on our many papers and had conferences. Good behavior was imperative.i was so happy when people were orderly and I could talk to them face to face. Now all these years later I feel the same thrill about meetings. Our St. Therese Chapter of DHC meets on the second Saturday of each month. There s nothing like packing my Bible and notebook in a tote bag and heading down to the church. We begin with Morning Prayer in McKee Chapel led by one of the Daughters. A brief business meeting in the Mayfield Room is next and then we have a program. Sometimes a Daughter will present a teaching or show a video. In one recent meeting we updated the vows we take of prayer, study, service and evangelism. We also have had guest speakers including Bill Cobb who serves as DHC Chaplain, Blake Barrow of the Rescue Mission and Diane Tatum speaking for the Stephen Ministry. We share our struggles and victories and we distribute a prayer list with all our concerns and praises. We try to make time to sing our wonderful Chapter song, In Christ Alone.
