1 THE ANCHOR OF THE Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This Memorial Day weekend, let us humbly give thanks to God for those who have given their lives in service to this country. An All American Picnic That s the theme of our parish picnic after the 10:45 a.m. service on Sunday, June 5th. We re going to be grillin burgers and dogs, if you ll provide the side dishes. It ll be fun and fellowship out on the pavilion for everyone! Before that, however, at our sermon time, Ken and Esmeralda Hanna and Sami DiPasquale and I will be talking about the expanded ministry that Ken and Esmeralda will be starting this summer. Ken will no longer be teaching at our parish school, but will be focusing on Rey de Paz, our Spanish congregation, and reaching out to our neighborhood. Please don t miss hearing about this exciting step of faith that we are taking in pursuing the vision that God has given us for reaching those who are in the Rio Grande neighborhood. Call to Prayer On Wednesday, June 8th, at 6:30 p.m., we will be having another Call to Prayer. The theme will be, Praying for Missions. We will have worship, and then we would like to pray for all those involved in missions at St. Clements. That includes: Our students who are going on the SST this summer in Houston; Those going on the Creel mission trips; The DiPasquale family, who will be travelling to Jordan for the summer; Those who are going with Ciudad Nueva to youth camps; Ken and Esmeralda Hanna; Teachers in the English Speaking Center; Our Parish School teachers and Board; june New Head of School I am happy to welcome Mr. Rick Betts to be our new Head of School. Rick and his family live in Atlanta where he has been a Head of School for the last several years. He will be starting July 1, so please pray for Rick and his wife, Stephanie. We know that you will enjoy getting to know them. In addition, we are grateful to Nick Cobos for being our interim head this last two years. Greeters Ministry We are a very warm and friendly congregation, but visitors may not have the chance to get to know us, if we are all focused on talking to our friends after the worship service. That s why last Sunday we had an organizational meeting for a Greeters Ministry. The greeters will be available both before and after services to get to know visitors, to show those with children where the childcare areas are, to tell people about our church and to answer questions. If you are the extroverted type (you know who you are), let us know if you would like to be a Greeter! You may call, or the office or Janet Newsom at: janetn405@aol.com A Critical Special Need This summer, as we take the step of faith of supporting Ken and Esmeralda Hanna (and their beautiful family!) in an expanded ministry, we need to raise additional income. We put half a year s salary for Ken in our budget, but frankly, our giving has not met that level so far. Therefore, we are asking for additional donations so that we will be able to accomplish this important part of our vision. Please ask God if he may be leading you to help us. In Our Risen Savior, The Rev. William C. Cobb, D. Min.
2 CHILDREN S CORNER Rachel Degenhart, Children s Ministry Director Last month I talked about what it means to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus. This month, I would like to share an article that contrasts the Old and New Covenants. I believe that the death of Jesus on the Cross did more than eliminate the need for sacrifices. It changes everything, this is why Paul says in Romans 12:2 that we need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This article is taken from a blog by Kris Vallotton, a pastor at Bethel church in Redding CA. (Matthew 5:43-45) You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Have you ever noticed that God is the One who said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy? That s right! Under the Old Covenant, it was God who actually sent the children of Israel into the Promised Land and commanded Joshua to kill everybody in the land it was the genocide of Gentiles. In the Old Covenant, your love for God was measured by your hatred for those who hated God. Even some of the familiar stories we tell in Sunday school, at their core, reflect this hatred toward the enemies of God. Why did David kill Goliath? Because the Philistines were enemies of God. It reads like a good story until you consider what David was doing killing people who didn t love God. Goliath and the Philistines were the bad guys because they didn t love God. In fact, Israel s first king, Saul, was removed from his kingship because he extended mercy to a king who was condemned to death. Sometimes we try to skip over these realities, but it is very important for us to deal with them in a healthy way in order to make a proper comparison of Old and New Covenant realities. The way we understand the New Covenant will determine our concept of New Testament the New Testament mandate is to love everybody, even the people who don t love us and who don t love God. Old Covenant prophets judged cities and nations. This was the prophetic mandate under the previous system. The moral of the Old Testament was that we couldn t be good enough to get into Heaven. We need a Savior. This is why everything we see under the Old Covenant is often so severe. The severity of the law confronts us with the severity of sin, and again, how desperately humankind needed a Savior. Sin is so severe that it deserves judgment; hence the reason why the prophetic voices under the Old Testament often released words of judgment. Time after time, the people of God were reminded through the prophets of God that they were in dire need of a Savior. That was the Old Covenant but now we have a Savior and everything has shifted. Jesus came and fulfilled the words of the Law and the prophets (see Matthew 5:17). Here is where we see the contrast between the two Testaments and how they give us different definitions of the prophetic. The goal of New Testament prophecy is that we would find treasure in the dirt of people s lives. Jesus bore our sins. He carried our shame. He was condemned so we would never have to be. Things have changed now; and as a result, how we approach prophetic ministry is very different under the New Covenant. You can find the entire article at from-what-covenant-are-you-prophesying/ Calling all 3-6 graders to an awesome camp with Mr Austin! Fun, good food, sports, crafts, and surprises. 3 Starting in July, Mr. Rick Betts will arrive to begin his service to St. Clement s as the new Head of School. Mr. Betts is coming from Atlanta Georgia and has had much experience as a Head of Schools in the Atlanta area. In the coming weeks, you will be hearing all about Mr. Betts and about his qualities that will wonderfully serve our school and community. My purpose in writing today is to thank you for the vast amount of support that I have received as Head of this amazing school. I have loved every minute of my service here and I feel honored to have had this opportunity. I was fortunate to have been selected in 2002 until 2011 to lead the school and again in 2014-to now. I have always loved St. Clement s Parish School not only as the Head, but as a parent and as a grandparent. Not only do I thank you for your constant prayers for my leadership, but I request that you continue in your prayer for our school and for Mr. Betts leadership as well. He will grow to love you as much.
