1 17 September 2017 The 14th Sunday after Trinity Welcome A warm welcome to everyone, and especially if you are new or visiting. Do please stay on for drinks and to meet people after the 9.30 and services and keep this welcome sheet for your prayers this week. Prayer with the Anglican Communion we pray for the diocese of Sodor & Man in the province of York; for Archbishop Justin; for Bishops Tim, Jonathan and David for the Sisters of St Andrew, near Taizé, among them Sister Katie Seal our mission giving: 350 for the Trinity Centre in Winchester, working with those who are vulnerable and/or homeless those killed, injured, bereaved or homeless due to the earthquake in Mexico all in the Caribbean, Cuba and the southern states of America affected by Hurricane Irma, and those seeking to bring aid wisdom for world leaders as they formulate policies to combat climate change all who are responsible for making decisions about migrant people; for those who risk their lives in an attempt to live in safe countries the police force and prison services as they tackle crime and help offenders all responsible for our safety, security and health at home, work and leisure students starting new courses at college and university young adults who find life hard or who suffer from addictions and phobias give thanks for our parish s commitment to babies, children and young people the unwell: Caroline, Jess, Robin Bishop, Julia Jones, Laura Liepins, Emma and Mark Miller, Kate Morgan, Sally Owens, Jean Reeder, Laurie Sharp, Ruth Smith and Maria Sulzmann. All awaiting appointments or treatments those who have died recently, including Polly Birch and Margaret Chambers; all who live with the pain of untimely death; God s comfort for their families and friends and all who remember loved ones Please feel free to put prayer requests on the board at the back of church or them to admin@stmatthewstpaul.org. Lady Chapel is set up for prayer, either alone or with one of the prayer ministry team, after the 9.30 parish communion service.

Keep alive in us the memory of your mercy, that our angers may be calmed and our resentments dispelled. May we discover the forgiveness promised to those who forgive and become a people rich in mercy. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen. Romans 14: 1 12 [p. 304] Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarrelling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgement on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgement on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it in honour of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honour of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honour of the Lord and give thanks to God. We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Why do you pass judgement on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgement seat of God. For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,

Matthew 18: [p. 305] Then Peter came and said to him, Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times? Jesus said to him, Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times. For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything. And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay what you owe. Then his fellowslave fell down and pleaded with him, Have patience with me, and I will pay you. But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy on you? And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he should pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart. Almighty God, whose only Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence: give us pure hearts and steadfast wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Harvest Festival provides the Winchester Churches Nightshelter with an invaluable opportunity to replenish its food stocks for the year ahead. Residents receive breakfast and a hot cooked evening meal every day of the year, as well as sandwiches, cakes and other snacks, particularly at weekends. Many of the donations received are also used in cooking workshops to help prepare residents for independent living after they have moved on from the Nightshelter. Items that will be particularly helpful this year Food: tea bags, instant coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, chickpeas, noodles, rice, ketchup, brown sauce, chocolate spread, marmite, tinned custard, evaporated milk, condensed milk, tinned vegetables (peas, beans, mushrooms, sweetcorn), healthy cereals (no porridge, please) Housekeeping items: loo rolls, kitchen roll, washing powder, anti-bac spray, shampoo, floor cleaner, dishcloths, tea towels. We re looking for walkers to tread some, or just a little of, the Clarendon Way. Starting at Winchester Cathedral and arriving in Salisbury Cathedral just in time for Evensong (or maybe not) this is a great way to do some exercise in the beautiful countryside and get to know people better. Notices New job at hospice We wish Revd Rosie Deedes and her family well as she starts a new job tomorrow as Spiritual Care Lead at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight. (For those who don t know her, she s Nan Deedes daughter and sister of Ali Galvin and Liz Stannard.) children s choir Urgently needed: confident pianist/leader enthusiastic about working with children. We have two mums who are happy to open up, set out and make refreshments, but they need someone to join their team. This term we re providing sandwiches and cakes so we need a few people to help set out tables and food and make drinks. Beyond Ourselves: practical help at Nightshelter Immediate: a few extra hands during the day until the end of September, to sort stocks of food in order to prepare storage for harvest items. Temporary in October: a few people, daytime, to help sort harvest donations. Tuesday puddings: the catering co-ordinator would love to have donated puddings early in the week every now and then.
