1 3 February 2019 The Presentation of Christ in the Temple; Candlemas Welcome A warm welcome to everyone, and especially if you are new or visiting. Do please stay on for drinks and to meet people after the 9.30 and services and keep this welcome sheet for your prayers this week. Prayer with the Anglican Communion we pray for the province of Burundi; for Archbishop Justin; for Bishops Tim, Jonathan and David the Sisters of St Andrew in Brussels, among them Sister Katie Seal our mission giving: 200 for Minstead Training Trust, offering residential and day care with training in work, life and social skills to adults with learning disabilities those who, like Simeon and Anna, faithfully watch and wait for an encounter with Christ; thanks for the wonderful Candlemas picture of three generations together giving thanks for the musical workshop Bugsy Malone yesterday; the energy and talent that made it possible; for the young people and adults involved children and young people growing up within a pressured education system, praying that they may have enough space and free time in their busy lives that in our busy world of demands and noise we take time to listen to ourselves and others; those for whom time passes slowly, with long days and nights preparations for Stewardship Sunday next week; Peter as he prepares his sermon the Christian press, for guidance as they seek to communicate with integrity and vision; for Winchester churches and their interactions with the press the unwell: Caroline Behan, Silvia Brown, Christopher and Clifford Browne, Henry Drew, Vera Edwards, Liz Elsworthy, Judy Golding, Andrew James, Julia Jones, Laura Liepins, Emma and Mark Miller, Kate Morgan, Hugh Peskett, Les Scott, Nicki Smith and Jane Seal; all awaiting appointments or treatments those who have died recently, including Andrew Parsons and Daphne Smith; all who live with the pain of untimely death; God s comfort for their families and friends and all who remember loved ones Please feel free to put prayer requests on the board at the back of church or them to admin@stmatthewstpaul.org. 4 Reading Luke 2: [p. 789] When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord ), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. And the child s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too. There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. 7 Coming up Screening of Tomorrow This documentary film by Cyril Dion and Melanie Laurent, showcasing positive stories and highlighting practical solutions to the ecological, economic and social crises around the world, will be screened at The Stripe, University of Winchester, on Tues 5 February, 6.30 pm (free, no booking required, open to all). Without question, this is absolutely the best and most creative film on the future of humanity and the environment Paul Hawken, environmentalist and author. Space in the City The last of Mark Byford s New Year series of talks, The Annunciation: A Pilgrim s Quest, takes place this Wednesday: Seeing not looking. United Church, pm (no entrance charge). The Bible in England and the Bible in English You are invited to a public lecture at on Thurs 7 February, 7 pm, by Professor Christopher Mulvey, about the powerful influence the Bible has exerted on the English language. This is an exciting collaboration between the English Project and the parish, held specifically to raise funds for Building for Life. Christian responses to domestic abuse The Institute for Theological Partnerships is hosting a presentation by Dr Kristin Aune of the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University, exploring how and why domestic abuse has become so pervasive and what factors contribute to violence against women, including the role of religion in gender violence.
