1 19 February 2017 The second Sunday before Lent Sexagesima Welcome A warm welcome to everyone, and especially if you are new or visiting. Do please stay on for coffee and to meet people after the 9.30 service and keep this welcome sheet for your prayers this week. Prayer with the Anglican Communion we pray for the diocese of Mahajanga in the Province of the Indian Ocean; for Archbishop Justin; for Bishops Tim, Jonathan and David for the Sisters of St Andrew, near Taizé, among them Sister Katie Seal our mission giving: 250 for the Leprosy Mission, working with those suffering from this terrible disease Yemen and Somalia on the brink of famine God s generosity and our response stewardship renewal one another as we pray, consider and commit give thanks for our new Parish Visitors being commissioned today, the whole parish visiting team, the co-ordinators and those they support children, parents and teachers on half term for a good, fun, refreshing break the NHS, struggling to cope with the huge demands it faces; all staff working long hours; the ability to make good judgements even when tired or under pressure all countries where the death penalty is still used those who feel scared about their future and that of the people they love the unwell: Sheila Conway-Miller, Emrys Davies, Julia Jones, Ryan King, Barbara Mariner, Emma and Mark Miller, Kate Morgan, Sally Owens, Paul Rolph, Les Scott and Brenda Sherriff. All awaiting appointments or treatments. All recovering after surgery those who have died recently, including Edna Weller and Joan Yaldren; all who live with the pain of untimely death; God s comfort for their families and friends and all who remember loved ones Please feel free to put prayer requests on the board at the back of church or them to admin@stmatthewstpaul.org. Amen. Romans 8: [p. 75] I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Matthew 6: [p. 75] Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you you

For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. 4 Parish Visitors prayer Lord Jesus, teach us that you have no body on earth but ours; no hands but ours; no feet but ours. Ours are the eyes through which your compassion must look out upon the world; ours are the feet with which you must go about doing good; ours are the hands with which you must bless men and women now. Each session will include shared prayer, space for personal reflection and an opportunity for discussion. 6 Coming up Soul Matters talks The spring series of Space in the City talks finishes at the United Church, Jewry Street, on Wed 22 February, pm, with Patrick Woodhouse s second session on The practice of faith in a dismissive world. Supporting refugees coffee morning at the United Church on Sat 25 February, 10 am 12 noon in aid of the British Red Cross project Hampshire Young Refugees Together, supporting asylum seekers and refugees aged 15 to 25. 7 Notices Stewardship booklets Please help by looking for two or three addresses of people who live near you and delivering their booklets. Lent collecting boxes This Lent we are collecting for Partners for Change Ethiopia (formerly St Matthew s Children s Fund). It works closely with the poorest people, helping them find carers for orphans and providing everything a child needs to live a healthy, stimulating life. Please take a Lent box home and support this worthwhile charity if you are able to. Community Day 2017 We have a new performance co-ordinator! Many thanks to Barney Lynch for stepping up to help. The date for your diaries is Sat 6 May. Be prepared for lots of interesting information about Carnival and how you can join in as the time approaches. Calling all campers The parish camp for 2017 is to be held on 1 3 September at Avon Tyrrell in the lovely New Forest.
