2 As you know, this is the weekend of our parish picnic. Many remember the old days when we went to Pioneer Water Park in Claridon. The parish paid part of the discounted admission and each person paid the balance. Well, things got very expensive and fewer and fewer people attended. Besides this, we were spread out all over the park much of the afternoon. We finally changed and contacted Steve Trudik about moving the picnic to the shrine. This has worked out well for many of us. We have time together, we have a simple Mass and games and entertainment when available. It s our picnic to enjoy. Thanks to Paul and Marge Petras and all who make our picnic fun!...we continue our parish budgeting for the fiscal year. We will be presenting the annual financial report for soon. At present we are able to keep up with our bills without drawing too much from savings. As we present the report, I once more ask for all of us (including me) to engage in sacrificial giving. Each week we try to make our offering reflect a little bite and a sense of giving beyond. Please make sure you use your envelopes, including children s envelopes and make a committed offering to our parish and its programs. God bless your faithfulness!...we saw Sister Rosemary at Notre Dame last week. She has been laid up for awhile with leg problems. She sends greetings to all...one of our kind parishioners has just made a donation of $2,000 to renew our parish subscription to FORMED. SUPER WOW! Purchase your tickets today so you don t miss out. CARD SHOWER FOR SISTER ROSEMARY.Sister Rosemary will be moving into a new apartment on the campus of Notre Dame in August. She will be in need of many, many household items. Our hope was to have a house shower for her, but she is laid up with some leg issues right now. So, we have decided to host a gift card shower instead. Can you purchase a gift card from any store that sells household items; JC Penneys, Target,.like sheep without a shepherd Today s readings are about sheep and shepherds. Jeremiah complains about the leaders of his time. They, the religious and political leaders, were failing to fulfill their responsibilities to guide and protect God s people. He compares them to shepherds who ignore their sheep and leave them vulnerable to thieves and wild animals. Jesus criticizes the religious leaders, too, for selling out their people. He compares the people to sheep without a shepherd. Political leaders are always lured by and often yield to the temptation to practice corruption. We know there are whole nations that are run by corrupt rulers for their own enrichment. In our own country we hear regularly about political leaders who are found to be corrupt because of money or power. Unless they are motivated to serve rather than be served, they line their own pockets and help their friends. These misdeeds surprise no one, but religion is supposed to be different. To represent God to his people calls for a much deeper sense of responsibility. We have known that that has not always been the case as we try to recover from the wounds of abuse. The image of a shepherd may be good for our bishops and priests, but do we like being called sheep? Real sheep are mindless, docile creatures that follow their shepherd unquestioningly. That s not a good image for the people of God who take responsibility for their lives.

4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? We all have hosted an open house dinner party. One of the most difficult part in the planning is the meals. How many will come, how much food do you prepare? That is exactly what the kitchen planning group of Dawn and Paul is going through. SO.please purchase your dinner tickets in advance and help the team plan appropriately. Take out dinners are also available! CHINESE AUCTION DONATIONS One of the fundraising efforts at our Chicken Dinner and Car Show is our raffles and Chinese auction. We are looking for donations. New items including gift cards and cash donations are awesome ways to help with the event. You can buy items and we will design and wrap them. Ask businesses that you purchase from for a donations, like restaurants, hairdressers, pet care, insurance reps., etc. Some business will offer a gift card. Drop off your items at the office now through August 5. CHICKEN DINNER AND CAR SHOW VOLUNTEERS It takes many, many volunteers to host our annual fundraiser. In last week s bulletin, there was a sign up sheet to volunteer in one of the many areas of the event. Have you turned in your completed sign up yet? Please give the office a call or drop the volunteer sheet in the collection basket. We can t do this without all of you! It s all in vain to preach the truth to the eager ears of trusting youth.
