Now that I have your attention, I ll tell you what I need to tell you. Have you noticed the new digital LED sign sending messages out to people passing the church on Lakeshore Road? It is meant to get drivers attention as they drive by Lakeshore Church. Hopefully, the little joke with which I opened this article got your attention, and you re still reading. The Session hopes that drivers read the sign and are drawn to think about worshipping and serving God through Lakeshore Church. The best invitation to worship and serve God through Lakeshore Church is from you to a friend, family member or neighbor. Letting people know they are invited and welcome at Lakeshore Church has become a challenge in Thirty years ago Lakeshore could have reached many people by advertising in the Yellow Pages and in the local newspaper, The Times Herald. Signs with black block letters changed by hand were also available. Today the options are much more numerous: Facebook, Website, Google, newspaper, radio, television, Yellow Pages, Instagram, digital sign, etc. The most effective form of communication however remains one person inviting a friend, neighbor or family member to a church event or worship. If the purpose of Lakeshore Church were to provide opportunities to worship and serve Jesus Christ only for church members, we would not need a colorful sign in front of the church. Our purpose is to invite others, who are not currently in our church family, to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Our new digital sign will help us do that. The messages on our sign change regularly. The township allows us to keep the sign turned on from 7 AM to 9 PM. Each message remains on the sign for about 3 seconds. The current signs are: FRIENDLY, HAPPY, JOIN US, SUNDAY, 10:00 AM; KIDS SIGN UP NOW, PALM SUNDAY PAGEANT; GENTLE YOGA, EVERY THURSDAY, 9:30 AM, EASY YOGA, MEDITATIVE, DROP IN; MAUNDY THURSDAY, POT LUCK, APRIL 15, 5:00, EVERYONE WELCOME Programming the sign takes knowledge and skill. The operators have to understand the software, that is the program, that takes the message from a computer and sends it to the sign. The operators must have the innate ability to design the color of the font, the size and shape of the font, the background color, and the time each message remains on the sign. We are blessed to have two people currently with the knowledge and skill necessary to program our new sign, Nancy Nunez in the office and Sue Colwell. Perhaps you would like to be part of the team that programs the sign? If so, let me know. Our new sign was not cheap, costing over $26,500. It was paid for with $10,000 from Memorial Funds (thank you Memorial Committee and those who have given memorials to Lakeshore Church), $6,250 from gifts from individuals, and $10,250 from the DWS, Jones & Martin Fund. Hopefully, the new sign will get drivers attention and they ll stop in to discover that God is calling them to serve Jesus Christ through Lakeshore Church. So, each of us has the duty to welcome new people who visit Lakeshore for an activity or for Sunday morning worship. I consider anyone who walks through the open door of Lakeshore Church to be part of the Lakeshore Family. What a joy it is to serve a church that cares deeply about those in the church family, but cares just as much about those whom God is guiding to give their lives to Jesus Christ, worship and serve Jesus Christ through Lakeshore Presbyterian Church! 5 Men s Breakfast Thirty women and men showed up for the Men s Breakfast on March 9 th to devour a delicious breakfast of hash browns, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon, orange juice, coffee and tea. The presentation by George Haynes about piloting freighters under the Blue Water Bridge, down the St Clair River to Lake St Clair, past Detroit to Lake Erie to the Welland Canal. The pilots must be in good shape to climb a 30 foot rope ladder from the Pilot Boat up the side of the freighter, then up to the wheel house of the freighter to guide it up or down the St Clair River. Pilot George Haynes told us that the most difficult turn in the Great Lakes is just south of the Blue Water Bridge. Mark your calendars now so you don t miss the next Men s Breakfast, open to men and women. The men cook and clean up, which make it a popular event for women. The next Men s Breakfast will be April 13, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:30. The guest speaker is Reverend Kevin Totty, a gifted preacher of the Word. The Men s Group first noisy offering to send one or more of our young people to Christian Camp this summer was received on Sunday, March 17, and $31.72 was received. Homebound Communion Lakeshore will be providing communion to our homebound members and friends. Maundy Thursday A potluck dinner and communion service will be held on April 18. (which is Maundy Thursday). Bring a dish or food item to share at 5pm. Pilgrimage is a three day (Thursday evening to Sunday) opportunity to get away, ponder your life of faith and reconnect or renew your relationship with God. SESSION MEETING, March 7, 2019 Session approved the contracts for each of our Pastors: ¼ Time Stated Supply Pastor Bill Davis; Temporary Supply, Associate Pastor for Pastoral Visitation Pastor Bre Ryan, and Temporary Supply, Associate Pastor for Christian Education Diane Oswald. These contracts were approved and sent to the Presbytery of Detroit Committee on Ministry for approval. Each contract is for 12 months and will be reviewed every six months. The Evangelism and Outreach Committee was granted permission to hold a Southern Gospel Concert every odd numbered month, beginning in either May or July. The time of regular Session Meetings was changed to 2:00 PM the first Thursday of every month. A thank you goes out to all our Session Members and to Tom Drake for serving as Clerk Pro-tem. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt for the children after the Easter Sunday Service. All children are welcome
