1 Bible Jeopardy 2018 Study Sheet Sunday, June 3, 10:00 a.m. Fireside Room Please bring a plate of cookies or bars to share (no nuts please) and join us as we celebrate this year of learning! Below are the stories this year s first - fifth graders have studied along with memory work. Take some time to brush up on your Bible knowledge and come prepared to pick your category and buzz in to answer questions and score points! Congratulations on a great year of learning!! Jesus, Our Vine Bible Text: John 15 Memory Verse: John 15:5 NRSV I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Explain in simple terms the metaphor: I am the vine, you are the branches. Jesus is like the vine: strong, helps us, supports us, guides us, teaches us, cares for us. For older kids: branches and leaves don t exist without the vine, they die. We have life in Christ. God s love flows through to us like life-giving sap flows through the vine. We are like the branches: we learn about God by abiding in the vine - living with God and God in us. Our branches grow strong and bear fruit when we learn about God, and follow Gods ways. By making good choices in our lives we will be examples for others and help them to know about God too. By using the gifts God gives to us, we are sharing our fruit with others. State several ways in which you can stay connected to God. Identify fruits or gifts you have been given by God to use. Understand that we are called to serve God and one another in love. Reformation 500 October 2017 we celebrated the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation! Bible Text: Ephesians 2:8, Psalm 46:1, Romans 5:1 Bible Jeopardy 2018 Study Sheet 1
2 Memory Work: For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8 NRSV God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 NRSV Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to the grace in which we stand. Romans 5:1 NIV (For Reference) Luther s Seal: Martin Luther created a special seal for the new church of his day. It reminds people what the new church believes. The Cross reminds us that Jesus died on the cross so we can be forgiven by God for all of our sins. The red heart reminds us that we believe in Jesus with all our heart. The white rose reminds us of the peace we feel when we believe. The sky colored background reminds us of the joy we share with God when we believe. The gold ring around the outside reminds us that this joy will never end. OBJECTIVES: 1) be able to differentiate between Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, Jr. 2) be able to place the Reformation Movement in time as compared to Columbus voyage in ) understand that Martin Luther began the Reformation Movement that resulted in a wide variety of Protestant denominations. This movement began with Luther s 95 Theses, or reasons. 4) identify that the Lutheran Church is founded on Martin Luther s Biblical teachings. 5) identify that Martin Luther wrote one of the great hymns of the church, A Mighty Fortress is our God. 6) understand that Luther translated the Old Testament from its original Hebrew and New Testament from its original Greek into German, the language spoken in the home. The Bible had NEVER been in the language of the people before. It was only in the hands of the priests lest it became misused. 7) understand that Martin Luther sought to reform the Roman Catholic Church, not leave it. He called on the church to reform based on his Biblical studies and his own experience with freedom of faith. He wrote about these in his 95 Theses. He nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg Cathedral, as was customary for open- ing debate. He didn t realize that this action would start the Protestant Reformation. 8) understand that Guttenberg got a hold of Luther s 95 Theses and printed it, and distributed it all over Germany. Luther didn t anticipate this would happen, but because it happened, it helped open the debate. Bible Jeopardy 2018 Study Sheet 2
3 9) know that Guttenberg developed the first moveable-type printing press in 1440, and introduced it in The first book that was printed was the Bible. The printing press operated at three minutes per page. The Internet is the Guttenberg Press of today. This was a big deal at the time. 10)understand that what makes us Lutheran is our belief in Justification by grace through faith for Christ s sake. Romans 5:1 11) understand that God comes to us in the Word (Bible) and Sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism. This is one of the reasons why worship is so important for us. 12)understand the importance of the Word as law and gospel: the law exposes us and our mistakes and our sins and it drives us to the gospel where we understand that in spite of our wrong doings, we are loved and forgiven - Children of God. 13)understand that our Vocation is to be a child of God - to praise and serve God. We can carry out that vocation in any occupation. eg: student, doctor, mail carrier, waitress, teacher, pastor, truck driver, farmer etc. 14)know that Luther and other reformers often encouraged people to read the Bible for themselves. Jesus Feeds the 5,000 Bible Text: John 6:1-14 (Also in Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:31-44, and Luke 9:11-17) Memory Work: John 6:14 NIV After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world. Re-tell the story in your own words. Define a miracle as an amazing event that tells us something about God. Discuss the miracles in this story and what they have to teach us: God can take what little we have to offer and turn it into something great - leftovers! (John 6:8-13) Age is not a limitation to serve God. (John 6:8,9) Jesus wants us to share what we have with others. (John 6:9) Key Lesson: Mark 6: The miracle of the feeding of the multitude tells one of the great stories of Jesus' ministry. The power of faith and the active intervention of Christ Jesus cares for the needs of the people who gathered to hear God's Word. And through his compassionate act, he reveals his true identity as God's Son, the Messiah. Miraculously, the people are fed and lots of food was left over. What did they go home talking about that day? what do you think they told others about what they had witnessed? Bible Jeopardy 2018 Study Sheet 3
4 How does Jesus teach and feed the multitudes today? How do you take the time to go see and hear Jesus? What gifts do people in your family share with others? How might God be multiplying them? Angels: God s Messengers Bible Text: Luke 2:1-20 Memory Work: Luke 2:10-11 NRSV 10But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. Describe an angel as a messenger of God. Identify who are the messengers today of God s good news. Know that the story of Jesus birth is found in the New Testament, and be able to find it in the Gospel of Luke. Know that Gospel means Good News. Consider ways in which you, too, may be messengers of God s good news. The Call of Moses Bible Text: Exodus 1-4 Memory Work: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NRSV Pray without ceasing. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 NRSV be able to locate Exodus in the Bible. know that Exodus is one of the first five books, called the Pentateuch, or Books of Moses develop a foundation for future learning about the Exodus story. recall the main events of the first four Chapters of Exodus: The Birth of Moses through his encounter with the burning bush. be able to place this story as starting 400 years after the death of Joseph and make the connection to how Joseph brought the Israelites into Egypt. be more familiar with the maps in the back of their Bibles and how to read them. have begun thinking about how God might use them, and to become aware of what excuses they may be making that get in the way. know that God hears us when we pray and cares for us like he cared for the Israelites. (with God) 2) recall God s Greatest Commandment Paraphrased: Put God first and love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39) Put God ahead of our personal goals and know that everything we have comes from God. 3) know that the Babel people were prideful, wanting to make a name for themselves, and Jesus disciples were meek until Pentecost when they were empowered to speak about God s deeds of power.
