2 A NOTE FROM STEPHEN: COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS November is the month when we all agree to something we should be doing every month and every day: giving thanks to God for all our blessings. Let s give thanks to God for America. The story of when the Pilgrims sat down with the Indians to eat turkey at one table represents our hard earned prosperity, our unity in adversity, our diversity, and our freedom of religion, all of which continue to inspire the world. Let us give thanks to God for family and friends. It is a joy to be with them on Thanksgiving Day, and, if we are wise, to appreciate those who can t be at the table: those we fondly remember, even those who died before we were born, whose sacrifice and love have given so much to us. Let us give thanks to God for First Presbyterian Church. For those who built and maintained and led this congregation through the last 140 years, and also for the congregation we are a part of today. Every time is a good time to share the love of Christ with one another and the world around us. We are now in the midst of our stewardship campaign for Let us give thanks to God for those who have been so generous in their financial support of the church. So much of what we have been able to do for the cause of Christ, so much of what we will be able to do to the honor of his name in the future, is due to generosity of those who have given so much of their time, talents and treasure. But let us also remember that Christians are stewards of their hearts as well. Let us give thanks for those whose prayers, smiles, encouraging words, and outstretched hand makes all the difference as we reach out to each other in the church and the world. So let us count our blessings, especially the greatest blessing of all, the love of God from whom all blessings flow. Happy Thanksgiving! Stephen Price-Gibson

Thank you for thinking of me with the lovely flowers. 4 CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS A NOTE FROM THE REV. JOHN F. WELLS, JR., PASTOR Author of The First Hundred Years A History of the First United Presbyterian Church (1973) RECOVERY AND REVITALIZATION One of the ways we are commemorating our congregation s 140 year history is with a monthly excerpt from The First Hundred Years A History of the First United Presbyterian Church (1973), written by the Rev. John F. Wells, Jr., Pastor ( ). Copies of this informative congregational history can be found in the church library. This month s excerpt (from pp ) draws from the revitalizing ministry of the Rev. Ralph S. Hamilton, D.D., who came to a church in 1952 after several years of controversy about the introduction of a new Sunday School curriculum and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible replacing the King James Version in worship. The congregation had divided and many left the denomination with the Rev. Wesley Smedes, pastor from 1946 to 1951, to form Trinity Presbyterian Church. What follows is just a fraction of what was achieved during Rev. Hamilton s tenure. The Rev. Ralph Hamilton came to Kearney as no stranger. He had grown up at nearby Minden, and during the Passion Play Days, he had played the role of the Christ....His work in Kearney was to last for twelve years, making him the pastor with the longest record of service to this church.... His pastoral care was well received, and the continuing advance of the church after the deep wounds inflicted in 1951 is a great tribute to his tact and friendliness. Ralph inaugurated children s sermons as a part of the worship early in his ministry...the Board of Deacons was organized in 1953 after considerable study concerning the service rendered by deacons in other churches. The music program of this church has always been strong, and it remained so and improved under Mr. Hamilton s ministry.... Growth of the choir is noted by alterations in the choir loft area being needed in 1953 and in the purchase of six new robes. [1958] was the year Carolyne Sammons was elected church treasurer, and talk began about then concerning the advisability of having women elected to the session.... The role of women was widely discussed, but it was not until December 1962 that Alice Johnson was elected by this church as the first female elder. By September 1963 she was representing us at presbytery, and in 1966 she was a commissioner for the presbytery to the General Assembly Meeting in Boston. Audrey Nelson was the second female elder, elected in December 1963 and by 1973 this church had elected thirteen additional women for service. Mrs. Kenneth Kimball became church school superintendent in 1959, and with her husband on the session, major improvements in the education program began to be proposed....beverly Kimball s work as superintendent of the church school was especially appreciated. Vacation Church Schools were conducted, teacher training events were effectively supported, teachers contracted to teach from the accepted faith and life curriculum, parent orientation meetings broadened understanding, and whole families went to the regional training meetings in the summer. When she resigned from the position in February 1963, Mrs. Kimball deserved much praise for having upgraded the whole education and youth program.

In November we are remembering Crossroads Homeless Shelter with paper products, diapers, canned tuna, any food, and laundry soap. The Mayflower Secret (09 D Jac) by Dave & Nita Jackson is one of the Trailblazer Books, thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers (ages 8-12) to Christian heroes of the past. At age 13, Elizabeth Tilley and her family set sail on the Mayflower, a long and difficult journey. When the ship finally arrives in the New World, many passengers become very ill and die. Left an orphan in a strange new land, Elizabeth, alone, must deal with the horrible secret of what she saw on the ship. In writing Bread for the Journey (09 E Nou), Henri J.M. Nouwen enriches our spirituality through his wisdom and faith. Here are 366 interlocking meditations to sustain, guide and inspire us on our voyage of spiritual discovery. "Bread for the Journey nourishes the soul" - Fred Rogers, host and creator of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. "I am the translator who has taken journalists into dangerous Darfur. It is my intention now to take you there in this book, if you have the courage to come with me". Daoud Hari is a tribesman who has made a difference in the world by giving an on the ground account of the brutal genocide in Darfur. The Translator (09 E Har) by Daoud Hari has become one of the biggest stories of our time, informing the world about Darfur. In addition to books of general interest, our church library includes many Bibles, reference materials, hymnals, commentaries and studies, Presbyterian theology and doctrine, information about First Presbyterian Church of Kearney, Christian Education material, audio-visuals, materials on evangelism/mission/stewardship, world religions, and magazines. Taize Worship Service Sunday, November 10, :00 p.m. A TAIZE Worship Service will be held the Second Sunday of each month The TAIZE Community was first developed in Taize, France by Brother Roger Shutz in the 1940 s with an ecumenical group of church people from all over the world. It is from this community that TAIZE worship has come. Our faith begins and ends in worship; yet so often our worship can be submerged in a welter of instruction, edification and moral exhortation. In many churches on a Sunday morning there is little opportunity for corporate quiet, for reflection, for focusing in on the God who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. The great contribution made by the TAIZE Community has been the popularization of a more contemplative approach to worship. TAIZE worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, soft music, and silence. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. The service is open to the entire community. Come as you are and bring your friends.

9 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX November 18-25, 2013 You often hear us use the phrase the power of a simple gift. That describes Operation Christmas Child in a nutshell. Last year, we delivered over 9 million gift-filled shoe boxes that brought smiles to the face of hurting children in places like earthquake-devastated Haiti and war-scarred Sudan. Beyond the boxes themselves, these tangible expressions of God s love open doors for us to share the greatest gift He offers the gift of the Savior, Jesus Christ. We praise God for the harvest of faith that is already taking place through our follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Journey. Boys and girls in dozens of countries are becoming faithful followers of Jesus and telling others the Good News. As we prepare to collect shoe box gifts this Christmas, please keep in prayer the children who will be receiving our gifts and learning about God s Son. Make up your own shoebox. Shoeboxes and brochures are available in the Narthex. Items you can include in your shoebox are: School Supplies, Hygiene Items, Toys, Hard Candy, T-shirts, Small Stuffed Animals, etc. Other ways you can help: 1. Donate money to pay for shipping the boxes. A donation of $7.00 per box would be greatly appreciated. Make checks payable to: Samaritan s Purse. 2. Help during the week of the collections when boxes are received from around the area (over 8500 boxes were collected and packed last year here at this collection site). 3. Your prayers. Need a shoebox? Shoeboxes and brochures of what to put in the shoeboxes are available in the Narthex!!! FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH is the collection site for the Operation Christmas Child project. 12 NEWS FROM SUSIE October 2013 Dear Annabelle and First Presbyterian Church, Greetings to you! My mom and I were out when you left your message and then dropped by with the Presbyterian Women's $ gift. I am so sorry I did not get to see you personally! Please pass this thank you onto the women of First Presbyterian Church. Since my income is severely limited now that I am not working full time, the support is a great help. I have been lax in sending updates this year. In August I was reassigned to the La Laguna Presbyterian Church so I am now serving two churches! My home church in El Frijolillo where I am in charge of children's and youth ministries (Friday and Saturday commitment) and in La Laguna, I preach on Wednesday nights and then spend all day Sundays there, doing Sunday School for three groups (adults, youth, and children), visiting members, and then preaching and playing during evening worship. Abraham is a faithful presence and support for all the ministries. He is at home in Mexico, busy working on bee keeping projects (feeding the bees and building more hive boxes and beeswax trays used in the boxes (who knows what these are all called in English!). On a personally note, I will return home on Monday. In the coming weeks we will go to the state capital of San Luis Potosi to renew my residential visa with the immigration offices as well as turn in paperwork for my citizenship application (I can have dual citizenship). This will keep me from having to continue the annual renew of my visa (supposedly a permanent residence visa that you have to renew...ha!) and of course pay the costs of that visa. We are doing well. Keeping busy in both ministry and on the farm. Again, thank you for PWs' continued interest and support. Here is a photograph of a young man, Gamaliel Hernandez, from one of our congregations in the Huastecas who is studying in seminary and was in need of a laptop computer. His dad came to the United States years ago to work and 4 years ago stopped communicating with the family. So, Gamaliel did not have the funds to cover his need. The gift the Presbyterian Women gave me was used to buy him a laptop computer. It took a while to get the computer and get it to him! Blessings upon you and all the good folks at FPC. IN Christ's love, Susie and Abraham
