They shall not bear false witness. They shall do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with their God. Doesn t sound right, does it? Part of the Bible s power is that it isn t about them. It is addressed to us. We pray to our Father, The Lord is my shepherd, I am the one who must speak the truth, and walk humbly with my God. Years ago there was a Secretary of Labor who would tour factories and give the Pronoun Test. He would ask an employee to tell him about the company. If the employee said They make the highest quality products on the market, the company failed. If the employee said, We aim to satisfy every customer, it passed. The Labor Secretary said that employees who identified with the company are more productive, because they believe that if the company is successful, they will be successful. I don t know if the pronoun test is the best test to measure the productivity of a factory, but it certainly is an excellent indicator of the well-being of a church. There is a world of difference between saying the church should do more in mission and saying we should be doing more outreach into the community. We are now in that period of time that the church calls Lent, the season of preparation before Easter. A key passage from the Bible for this time of year is Psalm 51:10 Create in ME a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within ME. Such a prayer, centered on our selves, is not selfish. We know that the there are many problems in the world, but we also know that we are not of much use in dealing with them unless our hearts are renewed. (continued on next page)

2 (continued from front page) My church, our church, is the only church that can proclaim, in word and deed, the saving love of Jesus Christ in Kearney and the world. The church or their church can do nothing great for you or anyone else. This March, there will be many exciting things happening in our church. Many of our kids will be enjoying fellowship on a ski trip; one of our children will be baptized, we will come as invited guests to the Lord s Table, we will study the Bible in a special Wednesday evening Lenten study, one of our young men will receive his Eagle Scout award at a Court of Honor, we will salute the Girl Scouts on their one hundredth anniversary, and we will continue to serve our God as we volunteer and serve in the community. In these and many other ways, we will be busy in showing our love for our God because our God first loved us. First Presbyterian Church hasn t a prayer if it isn t your prayer, no outreach that isn t your outreach, no excitement unless it is your excitement, no plans unless they are your plans, and no future unless it is your future. See you in our church. Have a good Lent. Stephen ALL IN THE CHURCH FAMILY Congratulations: Worship & Music Committee s recognition for special services to our congregation for MARCH are those who volunteer to assist with funerals (food, help, and other arrangements). The lunches are sponsored by the Kearney Ministerial Association and are open to everyone. The community is invited to the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church, 4500 Linden Drive. The cost for the lunch is $5 per person, with a portion of the proceeds being given to local missions. Life Through the Cross is the theme with the focus verse: 1 Corinthians 1:18 The teaching about the cross seems foolish to those who are lost. But to us who are being saved it is the power of God. REFOCUS FOR LENT Give up complaining focus on gratitude. Give up harsh judgments think kind thoughts. Give up worry trust God to provide. Give up discouragement be full of hope. Give up bitterness turn to forgiveness. Give up hatred return good for evil. Give up anger be more patient. Give up pettiness become mature. Give up jealousy pray for trust. Give up gossiping control your tongue. Give up sin turn to virtue. Give up giving up persevere. -Author unknown

In this beloved classic, the author shares her meditations on youth and age; love and marriage; peace, solitude and contentment as she sets them down during a brief vacation by the sea. It is a book to be read slowly, savored, re-read, meditated and mused on. Its message is timely and timeless. To check out a book, do you know the drill? Choose a book from the catalogue listings in the 3-ring black notebook on the file cabinet or find a book by subject matter on a shelf. Sign the loaner card and place it in the smaller basket. Return the book to the larger basket. March into the library and enjoy the music of the written word.

6 THE AMERICAN BOYCHOIR On Monday, April 23, the American Boychoir will be traveling to Kearney from Colorado Springs. There are 30 boys in the choir, so we need 15 families who could provide them with lodging and breakfast. To show their appreciation for our hospitality, the choir has offered to do a private mini-concert for the host families upon their arrival at our church. If possible, we would also like to offer them a potluck dinner. They will be traveling to Lincoln the next day. If you could host two boys (separate beds), please let Sandy McKirahan or Kathleen Johnston know. 8 Taize Worship Service Sunday, March 11, :00 p.m. A TAIZE Worship Service will be held the Second Sunday of each month The TAIZE Community was first developed in Taize, France by Brother Roger Shutz in the 1940 s with an ecumenical group of church people from all over the world. It is from this community that TAIZE worship has come. Our faith begins and ends in worship; yet so often our worship can be submerged in a welter of instruction, edification and moral exhortation. In many churches on a Sunday morning there is little opportunity for corporate quiet, for reflection, for focusing in on the God who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. The great contribution made by the TAIZE Community has been the popularization of a more contemplative approach to worship. TAIZE worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, soft music, and silence. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. The service is open to the entire community. Come as you are and bring your friends. 11 TIME-TRAVELERS, GHOSTS, AND ZOMIES A Lenten Study Wednesdays, February 29 March 28 6:30-7:30 p.m. Family Life Center Have you ever wondered what the Bible has to say about zombies and ghosts? There are a whole range of topics we don t often speak of in church: time-travelers, superheroes, apparitions, and tales of the macabre. What does our faith have to say about these things? How do the questions we have about life and death, and life beyond death relate to our faith in the One who has conquered death? Come and explore some interesting Bible stories as we seek to more fully understand the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord. Listed below are the topics, scripture texts and themes which we will examine each Wednesday. Bring your Bible. Pages to help with the lecture and discussion will be handed out on a week-by-week basis. If you cannot come to the entire study, you are invited to come to one or several of them. Although short texts are listed, it is suggested that you read the larger story in which the text is imbedded.
