3 CHILDREN S TIME Presentation of Bibles to 3rd Graders Carter Cobb Hewitt Moyer Lynette Cobb ANTHEM River in Judea arr. John Leavitt Oftentimes I dream of music, of the river that freely flows. And it sings a song sweeter than honey, one everybody knows. Late at night I hear it singing then again when I wake at dawn. And it fills me up with hope and goodwill, the will to go on. There is a river in Judea that I have heard of long ago. And it s a singing, ringing river that my soul cries out to know. THE WORD I believe it keeps on trav lin but it rests on the Sabbath day. And the time when it pauses in stillness, I almost hear it pray. When I m weary and down-hearted, how I long for the song it sings, For the calm within its gentle blue, the peace it brings. There is a river in Judea that I have heard of long ago. And it s a singing, ringing river that my soul cries out to know. May the time not be too distant when we meet by the river, meet by the shore. Til then dream of that wonderful day as we sing once more. There is a river in Judea that I have heard of long ago. It s a singing, ringing river that my soul cries out to know. Hallelujah! Prayer for Illumination Let us pray. O God, by your Spirit tell us what we need to hear, and show us what we ought to do, to obey Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. First Reading Exodus 17:1-7 Red Pew Bible, O.T., pg. 64 Gold Pew Bible, O.T., pg. 83 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! 5 SPREADING THE WARMTH It is that time of year again to think about Spreading the Warmth for those in need of warm clothing or other needed supplies for the cold season rapidly approaching. There will be an area in the Narthex to bring your donations, and monetary gifts can be left with Rose in the church office. We will be donating everything to The S.A.F.E. Center again this year. PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS OFFERING What you ve known as the Peacemaking Offering has been transformed into the Peace & Global Witness Offering. This new Offering will have a greater global reach, more significant impact, and bring peace to people through Christ. The Peace & Global Witness Offering is received during the Season of Peace, which ends on World Communion Sunday. Our church will retain 25 percent of the Offering we receive and the Mission Committee decided the 25% of this year s offering will be donated to the Samaritan Loan Fund. The Samaritan Loan Fund helps people in need in our community. Join us on October 5 th as our church celebrates World Communion Sunday and as we commit to being instruments of the peace we find in Christ. Come ready to give generously to the Peace & Global Witness Offering WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY NEWS Thanks for your mission outreach in September for the School Emergency Fund, sweat pants, underwear, and cash gifts. It will be deeply appreciated. Let us also remember the school staff and students in our prayers in their important work also. Our mission emphasis in October will be the Salvation Army. They would welcome any gifts of canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, mac and cheese, and baby items: no tear shampoo, lotion, wash cloths, and diapers, any size but newborn. No book is required for this study. If you need a ride, please call Georgia Byrn at Taize Worship Service Sunday, October 19, :00 p.m. A TAIZE Worship Service will be held the Second Sunday of each month The TAIZE Community was first developed in Taize, France by Brother Roger Shutz in the 1940 s with an ecumenical group of church people from all over the world. It is from this community that TAIZE worship has come. Our faith begins and ends in worship; yet so often our worship can be submerged in a welter of instruction, edification and moral exhortation. In many churches on a Sunday morning there is little opportunity for corporate quiet, for reflection, for focusing in on the God who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. The great contribution made by the TAIZE Community has been the popularization of a more contemplative approach to worship. TAIZE worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, soft music, and silence. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. The service is open to the entire community. Come as you are and bring your friends.
6 CONSIDER BECOMING A CASA VOLUNTEER CASA volunteers donate their time to act as the independent eyes and ears of the court, investigate in the field, and speak solely in the interest of the child. Volunteer Training is scheduled to start the 7 th of October 2014! The training consists of speakers from the community, curriculum set by National CASA, videos, hands on case training on a mock case and lots of question and answer time. CASA programs in Nebraska operate in compliance with the Nebraska Court Appointed Special Advocate Act (Nebraska Revised Statutes et seq). The CASA training will be held in Kearney during the evenings and one Saturday to get to the 30 hours required. In surveys, Judges find CASA volunteers to be very effective in a wide range of activities that support the court process. They find volunteers most effective in considering the best interests of the child and in monitoring the case. Volunteer input is most highly valued on issues related to placement, stability, permanence and safety of the children while in care. To volunteer call 308/ ext To give a child a CASA is to give them a voice. To give them a voice is to give them hope, and to give them hope is to give them the world. ~Pamela Butler, former CASA child. HONEY SUNDAY November 2, 2014 If a group (i.e. Youth Group, Sunday School class) or other church members who would like to sell honey after a church service during the weekend of November 2 nd, then please call The Arc office at (308) to make arrangements. The Arc of Buffalo County is a non-profit organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. 7 WNL ADULT CLASS There will be two very special four-week programs for adults, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The first program will be Keywords in World Religions, Part I: Eastern Religions, taught by Stephen Price-Gibson. We will seek to gain an insider s perspective on the ancient traditions of Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Each session will enter the world-view of one tradition through one keyword, and we will make connections to our American culture and Christian faith through clips from popular American movies that illustrate the keyword under discussion. Part One of Keywords in World Religions will be offered October 1, 8, 15 and 22. Part Two: Western Religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) will be offered during Wednesday Night Live in January. Guaranteed to be informative and fun! The second program will be The Spirituality of the Art that Moves Us, taught jointly by John McKirahan and Stephen Price-Gibson. All of us love certain pieces of art. It may be DaVinci s Last Supper, or Picasso s Guernica, or the statue of the seated president at the Lincoln Memorial, one of Frederick Remington s western sculpture, or a painting or sculpture that you don t know if anyone else knows about. John McKirahan will bring his collection of images and his wealth of insight to help us explore what it is in each of these images that speaks to us so deeply. The working assumption is that as human beings we are, as we learn at the beginning of the Bible, made in God s image, and that human creativity is always an expression of our resemblance to our Creator God. Friends are as welcome to come to the adult classes. So bring them along for supper and for a great time for fun and growing in faith. PRIME OF LIFE Our next Prime of Life event will be held Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 6:00 pm. Prime of Life is a social group that meets the third Sunday of the month at the church for a light dessert, a delightful program, and wonderful fellowship. An open invitation is extended to everyone of the mature age of 55 and older to join in. Each month s hosts are responsible for RSVPs, devotions, serving a light dessert, a short program and clean up. A free will donation is taken; the money is used to reimburse the hosts or it is put in a fund to be donated at the end of the year to some entity to be voted on by the group.
