Palm Sunday All hymns numbered 2000 or higher may be found in the Sing the Faith hymnal. *Those who are able please stand Words of Preparation So let us spread before his feet, not garments or soulless olive branches, which delight the eye for a few hours and then wither, but ourselves, clothed in his grace, or rather, clothed completely in him. We who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread before him. Let our souls take the place of the welcoming branches as we join today in the children s holy song: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the king of Israel. --Andrew of Crete, 8 th Century preacher and hymn writer PRELUDE Wondrous Love David N. Johnson ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREETING Stephen Price-Gibson CHORAL INTROIT Hosanna in Excelsis Deo! Ronald Kaufman Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 118:19, 21, 26 Richard Elliott, Liturgist O Lord, open to us the gates of righteousness so that we may enter them, and give you praise. We will give thanks to you, for you hear our prayer, and you have become our salvation. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless your name from the sanctuary! Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! *HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor No. 88 *CONFESSION AND PARDON Loving God, you rode a donkey and came in peace, humbled yourself and gave yourself for us. We confess our lack of humility. As you entered Jerusalem, the crowds shouted Hosanna: Save us now! On Good Friday they shouted Crucify! We confess we sing Hosanna, but cry Crucify.

4 As the crowd laid their palms in front of you, you took no glory for yourself, but for our sakes steadfastly moved towards the cross. We confess that we want the praise of others and take the easy way. Lord, have mercy upon us. Forgive us, and help us to follow in the way of obedience, and be transformed by your sacrifice, by loving others as you have loved us. Amen. Sung Response Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us No. 574 Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Hear the good news! In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God! Response of Praise Bless the Lord No Bless the Lord my soul and bless God s holy name. Bless the Lord my soul who leads me into life. CHILDREN S TIME Distribution of Palms ANTHEM Shouts of Hosanna! John Purifoy In the distance, the sound of singing, in the air, feel excitement and praise! Garments thrown in the road before Him, crowds of people with palms to raise. Blessed is He who comes today. Glory and honor now we bring, Waving our branches and raising our shouts of hosanna, shouts of hosanna to the King! Hear the voices of jubilation growing louder as He draws near. Even rocks cry out, all creation, raise the sound for the world to hear. Blessed is He Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty. Lift up your heads, O ye gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! See the look in His eyes of mercy, as he stares at the road ahead. Shout hosanna, the Son of David, on a colt to His kingdom led. Blessed is He Shouts of hosanna to Christ the King! Shouts of hosanna to Christ the King! Waving our branches and raising our shouts of hosanna, shouts of hosanna to the King! 5 ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING Many of our churches have been asking how can they help those affected by all of these natural disasters. One way your church can help is by supporting the OGHS offering, which provides core funding for the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) around the world. Offering Distribution for OGHS: 36%: Presbyterian Hunger Program 32%: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance 32%: Self-Development of People The theme this year for the One Great Hour of Sharing is Sharing Brings Joy to Others, to God, and to Us. (2 Corinthians 9:6-9). The OGHS offering is received during Lent, especially on Palm Sunday, March 24th and Easter Sunday, March 31st. For more information about the OGHS, please go to WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY LESSON PREVIEW Thursday, April 4-10:00 a.m. The Women s Bible Study Lesson Preview with Rev. Taize Worship Service Sunday, April 14, :00 p.m. The TAIZE Community was first developed in Taize, France by Brother Roger Shutz in the 1940 s with an ecumenical group of church people from all over the world. It is from this community that TAIZE worship has come. TAIZE worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, soft music, and silence. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on the Lord. The service is open to the entire community. Come as you are and bring your friends. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Eternal God, whose Word silences the shouts of the mighty: Quiet within us every voice but your own. Speak to us through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ, that by the power of your Holy Spirit we may receive grace to show Christ s love in lives given to your service. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 19:28-40 Red Pew Bible, N.T., pg. 83 Gold Pew Bible, N.T., pg. 111 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON "GLORY IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN" *HYMN Hosanna, Loud Hosanna No. 89 *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE In Christ we pray: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven: Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
